Chris Speilman, one of my favorite Lions.

I got misty when he brought up his deceased wife. He’s a good dude.

What NFG got misty eyed over...

I think I have some dust in my eyes or something....maybe it's the onions.
A fitting honor for a great player.

Try and watch his A Football Life without getting misty eyed. A seriously good good dude.

My eyes sprung a leak....It's okay.

Spielman. The only buckeye who ever mattered in my life.
October 22nd, 2021 at 9:04 AM ^
Hey, doesn't John Cooper count?
October 22nd, 2021 at 7:03 PM ^
Besides Spielman, the only other Buckeye I ever have wanted to see in Maize and Blue was Jesse Owens.
Hey, if he was going to set four world records on our field, he should have been wearing the right colors while he did it.
October 21st, 2021 at 6:58 PM ^
He's a good egg.
October 21st, 2021 at 6:59 PM ^
Still not giving a cent to the Lions and their ownership.
October 21st, 2021 at 7:04 PM ^
Still pretty awesome what they did though but I agree with this.
It's like going back to the same restaurant every week that gives you a turd in your salad. Once they get a new chef and menu, I'll give them my attention / money.
October 21st, 2021 at 8:41 PM ^
But most weeks (unlike the last one) they are very creative about how they hide that turd in there. You gotta respect that.
October 22nd, 2021 at 9:15 AM ^
What other inept sports franchise could give you this level of creativity in defeat? Not the Maple Leafs. No, not the Bengals. Not even Rutger. The Lions.
Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory for my entire life. And a significant portion of my father's life.

That last 2-point conversion for the lead was epic. Oh, geez, too much time on the clock. Oh wait, I am not supposed to know that. Lions free.
October 22nd, 2021 at 11:03 AM ^
I thought the pullover Spielman is wearing is pretty cool... and then I remembered not a cent to the Lions until the Fords sell the team.
October 21st, 2021 at 7:02 PM ^
Very good man. Nice that he cares that much about Lions fans.
October 22nd, 2021 at 7:40 AM ^
If only the ownership cared about the fans.
October 21st, 2021 at 7:02 PM ^
I remember he once picked up a fumble recovery and scored, then spiked the ball with both hands, like he was trying to drive it through the turf. I think the announcer called it one of the greatest spikes he'd ever seen.
He would have looked great in maize and blue.
October 22nd, 2021 at 9:16 AM ^
That was his rugby spike, iirc.
October 21st, 2021 at 7:18 PM ^
That’s an awesome video. Wish you titled the thread a little differently so more people would watch it.
October 21st, 2021 at 7:50 PM ^
Absolutely correct, one of the sweetest video surprises I've seen in quite a while!
October 21st, 2021 at 8:43 PM ^
If only someone had the power to fix the title...
It's not even factually correct. He wasn't "asking" anyone to attend. He was (he thought) just doing a promo on the game.
If only someone had the power to fix the title...
October 21st, 2021 at 8:57 PM ^
LOL, nice hint.
I'll see what can be done...

Rob F - Excellent job on the edit.

Lions management and ownership has done so very many things wrong over the years, and I'm confident they'll continue to do so. I gave up my emotional investment in them about a decade ago due to the continuing incompetence.
But this... this they got so very, very right. A great honor for a great player and person, done in a great way. I tip my cap to them for this one!
October 21st, 2021 at 7:28 PM ^
Cool video. Weird title for a post.
October 21st, 2021 at 7:33 PM ^
Say what you will about the organization and the on field product but if there is one person who deserves to be part of a winning team, it’s Chris Speilman.
October 21st, 2021 at 7:35 PM ^
Should have been a Wolverine.
October 21st, 2021 at 8:04 PM ^
He has talked about this on broadcasts before - he wanted to go to Michigan initially, but his father was a rather rabid Buckeye and would not allow him to do so, essentially ordering him to go to Ohio State, if a parent can in fact do that. The way Spielman phrased his dad's words, it certainly sounded like one.
October 21st, 2021 at 8:06 PM ^
He's a wolverine at heart, in case you didn't know. He was forced by father to go to OSU. Had committed to Bo and his father both disowned him and told him he would lose job too.
October 21st, 2021 at 8:11 PM ^
And I would ask them to win games....
October 21st, 2021 at 8:40 PM ^
I'm ging to assume you are replying to the title alone. No way your comment makes sense otherwise! (You should watch the video.)
October 21st, 2021 at 8:57 PM ^
Yes it is. I did not watch the video based on the title. I will not spend another dime in the stadium until they put a winning product on the field.
October 21st, 2021 at 10:33 PM ^
Dude- read the new title and watch the video! I’ll be very surprised if you aren’t glad you did.
October 21st, 2021 at 8:12 PM ^
Great job, Lions!!! An extremely well deserved honor for one of the best players in Lions' history!
October 21st, 2021 at 8:18 PM ^
Done. I'll be attending the Lions game Sunday! I'm sure that will go well .....
More on topic, I've always liked Speilman. Seems like a very good guy.
October 21st, 2021 at 10:00 PM ^
A heads-up for you: per the video, the ceremony for Spielman isn't until the Oct 31st game.
October 21st, 2021 at 11:14 PM ^
This Sunday the Loins play the Rams in LA. It's the grudge match of Jared Goff vs his old team with Stafford.
That ought to go really well...
October 22nd, 2021 at 8:29 AM ^
Grudge match? LOL!!! Goff might be mad, but Stafford sure as hell isn't! And I don't care how mad Goff is, he isn't going to be mad enough to play so well that the Lions win.
Maybe the Lions can show up and win their first game of the year next weekend, when Spielman is properly honored?
October 21st, 2021 at 8:19 PM ^
I gotta get the cleaning person back here because it sure is dusty.
October 21st, 2021 at 9:27 PM ^
No doubt! What a class act. Hard not to admire him.
October 21st, 2021 at 9:59 PM ^
The guy gave his heart and soul to the game and left everything out on the field. Probably would have ended up coaching if he hadn't of had to deal with the incredibly bad hand he was dealt with losing his wife to cancer with young daughters to raise. Just an all around class act.
October 21st, 2021 at 10:09 PM ^
The only buckeye I’d ever tip my cap to. Good man who deserves all the good things in life after what he’s been through. Darn good commentator, too.
Sure would’ve loved having him at Michigan. He would’ve been amongst Michigan’s all time greats and by all accounts he wanted to come here. but sounds like his dad had other ideas.
October 21st, 2021 at 10:16 PM ^
As others have mentioned, he wanted to be a Wolverine. His dad asked him if he had made his decision and he said yeah, I want to go to Michigan. His dad basically said no you’re not. He would be disowned and his parents would be shunned by the community, so he went to his backup school.
Really good guy. A Great man. For all of his success in life, he was still dealt a pretty crappy hand.
October 21st, 2021 at 10:32 PM ^
This is great.
Tremendous respect for Spielman. This is, likely, the high point of the Lions' season this year, but if so it's a good memory all the same.
October 21st, 2021 at 11:07 PM ^
Well deserved for Chris. Class and all heart.
I was at the 1986 Harbaugh guarantee win game at the snake pit and Spielman must have made a 30 tackles sideline to sideline almost single handedly keeping them in the game. A real throwback player with no ego giving 100% on every play.
October 22nd, 2021 at 1:14 AM ^
That was awesome. Well deserved Chris, congratulations. Loved watching him play. The Lions deserve credit for this, and it's not often we can say that. Well done.
October 22nd, 2021 at 1:23 AM ^
I honestly thought he had already been so honored.
October 22nd, 2021 at 11:05 AM ^
I didn't know the Lions had a ring of honor.
