Ohio State/Penn State game gives me even more confidence going into Columbus

I know it’s Sparty week and looks like OSU is gunna win but watching Penn State play very even with Ohio State and holding the run game to about 2 years per carry and PSU being able to move the ball fairly consistently gives me a lot of confidence going into Columbus. Singleton has also had a great game on the ground and I can’t help but think what Corum/Edwards could do behind our elite offensive line as well. Anyway, go blue kick sparty ass!

Hopefully Penn State can score at least one more time and Ohio State gets bumped down in the rankings. Ohio State did close with two impressive drives though.

Disagree, unless you're talking about effort or something.  Penn State's offense is totally unsustainable, and it was always just a matter of time until OSU pulled away.  Their offense has no real move-the-chains passing game except Clifford improvising, which just can't last the duration of a game, and didn't.  Plus, Clifford's improvisation led to these turnovers through deflections, several of which are because he doesn't fire the ball on rhythm, because they don't have an attack that works like that.  They're a very limited offense when facing equal talent.

Nowhere did I say OSU has an elite D, they obviously don't.  And Clifford is a great improvisor and had his moments.  But the fact that they don't have a sustainable offensive scheme means Clifford is constantly running around trying to zip the ball through tight lanes. This led to three critical interceptions, which meant the game. You could argue that the coaches for PSU have built their scheme to this talent of Clifford's, and so the constant improvisation is intentional, but I think it's just a poorly-designed offense and they're lucky to have Clifford.

So you watched a game with a multi-faceted, well-oiled offense that marched the field through it's talent, timing and design?  I sure didn't.  I watched a team that relies totally on QB improvisation (which their QB is quite good at), but which improvisation led to sloppy interceptions, several other near interceptions, and an incredible day by Joey Porter bailing out several schoolyard plays with incredible catches.  To compare yards in a game in which a team gives the other team 4 short fields, is foolish.  OSU easily pulled away.  But PSU exposed their warts, and we're going to kick their ass.

This is my biggest takeaway, which gives me pause when I get too excited about our chances in Columbus. OSU didn’t beat themselves, they let PSU lose the game. They didn’t make any mistakes, and even when the game was tight and it felt like PSU was gonna have a real chance, OSU just kept doing what they do and let the other team fall apart.

It is good seeing PSU run the ball on them, and OSU not being able to run the ball, but make no mistake about it, this game can go real bad for us quick if we don’t control the game with the run and can’t have mental mistakes like JJ throwing the ball up to Corum. OSU can and will take advantage of that this year.

I think it's because PSU is generally a pretty good team and OSU just doesn't have the same level of hate for PSU as they do for Michigan.

OSU-PSU has only been played 37 times, and not a lot of those have had huge stakes.

There are some quotes in the Wiki article on OSU-PSU that claim otherwise, that this rivalry is just like Michigan-OSU.

Yeah, no.

Besides A-, being home, B- having at minimum equal talent, and going by recruiting ratings better talent, and C- having the revenge factor going for them, they have one other thing: a year of their own fans and coaches questioning their toughness after we pushed the ball down their throats. For elite football athletes having their toughness questioned is one of the worst things going. That is tremendous additional motivation on top of the other factors in their favor.

We can win, but I personally won't be confident of that

LOL!!!!  If the officials aren't clearly biased towards OSU.  What makes you think they won't be?

Did you see all the massive holding OSU did all game long that the officials chose to ignore?  And their go ahead touchdown drive started with no flag despite Stroud hiking the ball a full second after the clock expired.  Later in the drive, when Stroud chose to hike the ball almost 3 seconds after the clock had expired, the officials waited as long as they possibly could before throwing the flag.  You know that had to kill them inside.

This is the same deal Alabama has going for them.  They have all the five star athletes a team could possibly need.  They don't need help from the officials.  OSU would have won today regardless but the officials doing everything they could to help them out anyway is salt in the wound.

We're built to stop Ryan Day's offense and to attack his soft defense.  Our D is built to contain deep passes, and to stop the run.  This will lead to many promising OSU drives ending with FG's, because they don't have a power running game.  Meanwhile, since they don't face a power running game in practice, they're clearly soft in this frame. And they'll face the most powerful and diverse running game in CFB.  It's a perfect scheme to take into the Shoe.

Ya I leave this game thinking OSU is not invincible. Their D is opportunistic tho, but we can win at line of scrimmage and on the edge.  Their passing game is elite but their run game is only solid.

Key will be to grind them out and limit their offensive possessions. Need JJ to play his best ball security and decision making game. They like that tempo, so we’re gonna have to be ready for that as well on D

What are you basing their run defense being soft on? The most yards they've given up on the ground this year was to Wisconsin who had 192 and around 80 of that was on a long run by Allen. Everybody else this year has had a 124 yards or less and several were well under 100 yards.

Have you watched their DL this year? It's totally different and geared to stop the run and pressure the QB into mistakes - unlike last year which basically put no pressure on the QB and couldn't stop anyone's run game

I've said it before - and will say it again - JJ will have to win the game in Columbus this year - and he's very capable of doing it

I don't give a rat's ass about comparing teams - stats. Teams match up differently against other teams. Let this sink in - the VEGAS MONEY - right now favors OSU and It's in Columbus. We haven't beat them since - I believe - 2000 in Columbus. Have you ever been to THE GAME there? I've had my heart broke enough over the last couple of decades in the Horseshoe

PSU was consistently getting 6 or 7 yards when they run on first downs. Inexplicably, PSU kept trying to outsmart OSU in 2nd and 3rd short downs. PSU also found success running outside than inside. Clifford is just not good. That limited that offense. I heard the commentators say that they had two backups in OL. That showed.

Somehow, against all odds, the Buckeyes find a way to stop stepping on their own dicks and score 4 times in the 4th quarter. Given that, I believe we beat them 49-28.

Penn State had a shot without all the turnovers. But OSU is built and coached  like a 7 on 7 team.   They struggle running the ball and defending the run. And CJ Stroud can only play well when he is clean.

Here’s the problem. They can play like ass on offense for 3 quarters and still put up points in bunches. Takes so much discipline on defense. Every play. From every spot on the field. It’s a tall order. And their D is much better than last year. I’ll believe we win in Columbus when I see it. I know I’m a downer!
