New 2020 QB offer

Submitted by Magnus on November 5th, 2019 at 10:49 AM

With the retirement of 2020 quarterback commit J.D. Johnson, Michigan is on the lookout for a new quarterback in 2020. Jim Harbaugh offered Rancho Cucamonga (CA) Rancho Cucamonga QB C.J. Stroud over the weekend, and Harbaugh is planning to fly out for his playoff game on Friday, since the Wolverines have a bye week. Stroud is a 4-star, the #4 pro-style quarterback, and #137 overall. His crystal ball is 100% for Ohio State, and he has officials set for both Oregon and OSU. He went to the Elite 11 finals and is going to play in the All-American Bowl, so he's a pretty big deal.

They're pretty similar, in my opinion. Neither one is great on the run, but both are good athletes. I think Stroud is more polished at this point. His mechanics are better and more consistent, and his pocket presence is a little better. I also think Stroud has a stronger arm, too. They're the same style of player, but I think Stroud is a step above in most categories.

This is the correct answer.  Magnus gets a pass because of all the quality and typically consolidated recruiting info he provides on a consistent basis.  If it's a bit redundant or he's not posting "breaking news" we can probably manage to keep our panties out of a bunch and know that it's at the very least going to be solid info.

Any reason for optimism here? Any connection to him or did we recruit him at all prior to landing JD? Seems like a stretch to get in on this kid late. He’s significantly higher ranked than Johnson so would be a big pull but CB to OSU sounds like an uphill battle

Sure, there are reasons for optimism. First of all, Stroud hasn't taken officials yet, so he's not that far into his recruitment. Second, Ohio State already has a QB in the 2020 class named Jack Miller (NTJM), who's no slouch at #237 overall. Also, neither Michigan or OSU has a lot of depth at quarterback, so the opportunity for early playing time could be significant; that doesn't give Michigan an edge over OSU, necessarily, but it might prop those schools above some other programs.

Well said but I don't think there is any reason to be optimistic. Harbaugh has yet to prove he can do ANYTHING with a QB here and Day has done a TON with QB's there. Both Stroud and Miller have said that either of their commitments wouldn't bother the other and they welcome the competition. with the transfer portal willing and ready to find new homes for QB's it isn't a stretch to see them both end up at OSU and then one transfer out. Miller has had some Labrum issues over the last year and my guess is OSU is going HARD at Stroud to say look we like Miller but we aren't sure he is durable enough to withstand a week in week out beating. I think Stroud is going to OSU

who are the other potential candidates here for them? Seems like there's currently only 4-5 top 50 QBs uncommitted on 247 as of now so would they most likely try to flip Bailey from Tennessee since they suck, McQuarrie from UCLA since they're also garbage, or maybe take a run at somebody like Aidan Atkinson, 4 star commit for Northwestern (?!?)

For a second I thought I was going to drive out to the Chooch if Harbaugh was going to be there. Then I thought about it for an additional second and decided it would be terrible to drive out to the Chooch.

Check out YouTube for Stroud. He did an interview with Jeremy Birmingham last week at his HS. It will give a little more insight into his situation. He still seems open in making his decision.

Not to dampen anyone’s spirits but MSU was an early offer and over on the MSU boards they were pretty optimistic on their chances before he blew up at the elite 11.

(To be fair to the lunatics at RCMB there were still a bunch who thought they had a strong chance after he started getting OSU etc. interest post E11 this summer.)

Seriously - it doesn’t hurt to take a shot, and being one of 2 QBs in a class may not be the best option for a young QB no matter their confidence level.  (Both OSU and M bring in 5* QBs in 2021 so there is no benefit either way there imo.)
