Matt Weiss: Cade McNamara Will Play 10 Years in the NFL

Submitted by UMich2016 on April 15th, 2021 at 10:44 AM

Matt Weiss, Michigan Football's Quarterbacks Coach, appeared on Jon Jansen's podcast today.  Below is an intriguing quote Matt said:

"Cade is a guy who, for everything that people are gonna say... he's a guy that's gonna end up playing 10 years in the NFL.  You can say he's not enough of this, not enough of that, but at the end of the day he's really smart, makes great decisions, he processes things really fast, and his arm strength and accuracy are more than enough to win with."

Matt goes on to say that Cade is the starter.

I didn't think Milton would be good last year even after all of the hype because it didn't make sense with what we'd seen on the field. Yes, players get better, but they don't go from below average to NLF caliber in one short offseason.

We've only seen Cade briefly. He was nearly flawless in the Rutgers game and solid in the Penn State game before his injury. He also threw the lone TD against Wisconsin. In short, he's looked good so far. I think the Milton hype wasn't justified, and I think the assumption that Cade will be  average is also off.

Last year I said I'd be happy to be proved wrong. This year I hope I'm proved right. I think he's going to be a good quarterback.

I’m more hopeful about the season than most fans, and I’m not super down on Cade or anything, but when I see hype like this, all I can think is “3-9”

I get the point and it sounds great for Cade. I would love to see him play one FULL season here at Michigan, as long as he keeps the starting job.

Us fans will know soon enough if what Matt Weiss says about Cade is true. I'm rooting for Cade's success.

I'm really pulling for Cade. I really liked what I saw out of him last year when he came in against Rutgers. Yeah I know, "HURHUR bro it was just Rugters tho," but I don't really care. He stepped in and completely flipped the game. He was an absolute performance-wise 180 from Joe Milton and seemed like he had a very natural on-field presence, and just seems like a straight-up baller with an attitude (something I think this program NEEDS has been sorely missing the last several years outside of Devin Bush Jr. and Chase Winovich).

With that description, of McNamara I almost feel like Matt Weiss has been lurking on mgoblog and really wanted to weigh in on the great: Brady-Henson to Cade-JJ debate.

Let me just punch this into the Harbaugh decision algorithm...
> 2  Harbaugh inexperienced QB recruits
> 1 QB now being overhyped
> 1 incoming transfer QB
-> output -> Starting QB is Alan Bowman

I want to remind everyone what Wilton Speight looked like in his "limited snaps", in 2015.  I mean.....he looked HORRENDOUS!  Had some wonky throwing motion, and wasn't accurate at all.  Fast forward to him winning the 2016 QB battle, and this board melting down.  "SERIOUSLY, Wilton Speight?!".  Me included.  (lol).

Yet, he played very well, until he got injured.  Sometimes, that Spring Practice time is super valuable, for improvement.

As for last year, and "Why did Milton start"?  Remember, they didn't have a Spring Practice, and essentially needed to play the only guy with any experience....who happened to have some ridiculous physical tools, and looked great in the practice environment.

It's not like he started 12 games, and Cade just sat there.  He played a few games, then got the hook, in favor of Cade.

Let's remember that these guys still have a full Summer to work on what they learned, and have a full session of Fall Practices, before they play a non-conference opponent (which, they also didn't get last year).

Here's what Brain had to say about Speight:

"Speight did get in for chunks of the Minnesota and OSU games last year. His performance was what you might expect from a middling three-star redshirt freshman suddenly thrust into the fire. He looked overwhelmed. He was horrendous. He spurred tweets about Russell Bellomy.

Then he put together a game-winning drive. First off he hit Jake Butt near the first down marker, then Khalid Hill on a drag. Those were simple; a read and throw on a double post for a touchdown was less so"

"The grim three-and-out parade and unflattering comparisons melted away. Michigan won on a goal line stand that never should have happened for six different reasons; Rudock returned the next week and Speight faded into the background.

He re-emerged after Rudock was knocked out against Ohio State, and again looked completely overwhelmed for a half-dozen throws. After the shell-shock period he looked reasonably good. All of this was garbage time to be taken it with a grain of salt, but there was a nice anticipation throw in there"

"That playing time was brief and unimpressive and totally expected for a redshirt freshman backup. He had a tendency to panic under pressure; a number of the throws I filed IN or BR against OSU came when he got sped up and threw it to nobody in particular"

Cade's HS film declared that he is smart and both mentally and physically tough-a winner. I hope this means he will get a legitimate shot at proving himself on the field.

O'Korn and Patterson had way too much prima donna in them-to the detriment of everyone and everything. Those two really set this program back-and were allowed to do so. Time to get back to gritty, get-the-job-done play.

There is one other parameter that also comes into play in this discussion.  That is the relatively inexperienced OL that replaced several NFL draftees.

Cade did much better against the Rutgers DL, but PSU was a different story.  He was constantly pressured and his injury occurred when he was chased from the pocket.

This year the OL will have much more experience playing together, with a full spring practice to boot.

So with a bit of luck, all the pieces will come together in fall practice.

This is great to hear -- but we have heard it all before. Perhaps Matt W. will make a difference in the QB room and allow them to play to their potential. Let's hope so.

We need a functional passing game, if for no other reason than to loosen up the D to keep from running into 8 (or more) man boxes.

Let's hope it works out!

Meritocracy set aside.

A starter in place!

And I'm glad for it.

Now McNamara can set his feet down and go for it. I expect he will come exploding out if the gates in the first game.  :-)

While it may seem it's the same status quo for Michigan in the offseason. Can't we all agree that it actually feels good to know there's already a starter being named now instead of waiting all of summer workout and fall camp with the indecisiveness of not knowing who the starter will be?

Just enjoy this time and drink your alcohol half of you arm chair QB's and let's see what happens this season.
