[LOCKED] OT: Ole Miss band will no longer play "Dixie"
FYI. Is this a case of politcal correctness harming college football tradition, long overdue social justice, or something in-between? While UM football hasn't had to deal with the same history that many southern schools have on this issue, it isn't unassailable either (e.g. Fielding Yost keeping a black player, Willis Ward, out versus Georgia Tech) - so this does have some relevance here. At least this Ole Miss headline isn't about Hugh Freeze... yet.
POST-LOCK EDIT: I was really hoping this could last for at least a few hours before getting killed. So much for level-headed discourse. Oh well - I suppose MOMS know best.

MOD EDIT - Well, that went about as well as you could have imagined. Locking this, as apparently feelings on this are - and I cannot imagine why - strangely complex. - LSA

I don't really care but it is interesting that it was allowed to be played up until this season? I expect the NFL to have Washington drop the red skins team name.

I don't see how stopping playing a song, which set all your biases aside really is a beautiful song, solves anything. It's a song about a region. It was written by a guy from Ohio and before the Civil War even started. I mean criticize a lot of other things Ole Miss has done, but some things should be left to tradition and reminders of old times to better ourselves. Not just ban them completely.

I feel like most have very narrow views and limited knowledge of the history of the Civil War.
(EDIT: responding to UMxWolverines post above.)

Dixie Cups are being rebranded "Sharptons." The maker is recalling the familiar paper cups and offering a 1:1 exchange for consumers. That's all Bob ...

It's not the word that's objectionable. It's the song of the Confederacy. Which was treason in defense of slavery. A heritage worth celebrating if there ever was one. /s

I have a feeling we will only see reasonable, well thought out reactions to this topic.

I guess it could be a trigger for those that need a safe space.

How is the thread bad? It is a discussion about something occuring within Div-IA (fine.. FBS) college football. As long as people stay civil and mature (maybe a tall order), this could actually be something interesting. I apologize for not making it OT initially.

but probably for the best in this case.
