Let's Talk About Ohio State: Game (Sighs)

Submitted by Bodogblog on September 13th, 2019 at 3:35 PM

Hey!  So they were very good in a way that's awful for Michigan fans.  I had a talk with my betting slip for the season win total under 10, and while we're still going to keep at it, we both know it's probably over.  I'll start quietly bringing back some of my stuff from its place.

Caveats remain and they're the only thing you have left to hold onto: the season is still young and Fields/this team hasn't been challenged yet, so we don't know what happens when things go wrong; Cincinnati was thought to be a test because of the way they took care of UCLA, but it's becoming clear that team is a collection of athletic-looking guys gathered from LA-area coffee shops rather than an actual football team; the back-up QBs are (probably) still terrible, the back-up RBs meh; MSU/PSU/Michigan DBs won't give OSU WR's this much space, and their DL's won't give Fields this much time; cover the edges of the field and see if... Fields is comfortable throwing over the middle (Day will have a response so make it count early, i.e. jump an out route); I think Iowa also wins this game 42-0.

Highlights:

  • OSU dominated a team that is either OK or bad.  If the former holy shit.  If the latter this is what you would expect a good team to do.
  • Ryan Day is an elite play caller.  Surprised you with that one eh?  Maybe I should have thought of that while I was lol'ing at their spring game (when all play calls are basic).  I mean I think he is, because that would explain the number of wide open guys that both FAU and Cinci allowed.  Or both teams or bad.
  • Justin Fields is Terrelle Pryor.  That's not great eh?  He glides, easily avoids the rush, finds creases and scrambles for gains most QBs wouldn't, and can hit wide open WRs.  Did you ever wonder what a Don Brown defense would have done against Tressel's offenses?  Like Forcier didn't even have a chance, but maybe this team would?  Well you're going to find out.  Oh, and they have an OC who attacks on every drive, unlike Tressel.
  • It appears that Greg Mattison has done exactly what every OSU fan hoped: eliminated the unsound tendencies from Schano's scheme, simplified everything, and let the athletes at OSU play.  It's working quite well.  I hope the better offenses on OSU's schedule can turn him back into a so-so DL coach.
  • The OL looked very good in pass pro, fair enough in run blocking.
  • Yeah their WRs look really good too.
  • Game starts with a few nice plays by OSU, then a punt to the Cinci 1.  OSU gets the ball back at the Cinci 40 after a few fruitless plays by the Bearcats.  From there it's a waggle or two before the TD, which is a nice scramble up the middle by Pryor.

  • Next drive OSU actually turns it over on downs, and Cincinnati manages some offense (aided by a penalty) and gets the ball to the OSU 14 after going 66 yards.  Should be an easy FG, but it's not of course, because this the part of the story where Mordor looks unstoppable.  Remember that Mr. Frodo?  There's still some good in this world and it's worth fighting for?  Chase Young blocks it.
https://youtu.be/8Bn4Vtyv8yY?t=30
  • OSU marches down for another TD, the highlights of which are wide open WRs, a lot of passes to the outside, and some curls.  Nothing crazy.  Must be really good calls because Cinci can't cover any of it.  Maybe Cinci stinks.  Have I mentioned that?  Dobbins runs for a 4 yd TD that's nothing worth clipping.
  • OSU's next drive is highlighted by a play action pass in which Fields has 7 seconds to survey the field.  He navel gazes for too long, as a DE finally arrives from behind to sack him.  He fumbles but it bounces right back into his hand by dark magic.  A play or two later they run split zone with orbit action, which again doesn't look like much but Cinci is powerless against it.  Their WLB gets either held or caught messing with the OG for a beat too long, and Dobbins scores on a 60 yard TD.  MLB dawdles and it's too late. Nice work by the WR to fake a route, keeping the CB from engaging. Well coached.

  • Next drive is highlighted by Fields getting 8 seconds before releasing the ball; I mean nice play, but a lot of QBs can do this if given that amount of time.  This OL could be very good.  True freshman 5* Garrett Wilson makes an excellent grab on a very accurate ball to cap off the TD drive, in case you thought your future would be any better.
https://youtu.be/8Bn4Vtyv8yY?t=65 https://youtu.be/8Bn4Vtyv8yY?t=81
  • It's halftime, 28-0, and a 356 to 108 total yardage disparity, and there's really no reason to go on
  • Except to add that Chases Young also had 1.5 sacks and was murder
  • I clipped this one shot of OLB Pete Werner getting juked out of his shoes by a not-terrible TE from Cincinnati. 21 yard gain.  Throw against that guy, Indiana, would be my advice. Or Arnette.  Or LB Browning, who got time in this game and looked quite good, but probably hasn't figured it all out yet.

  • One last thing that won't matter: Fields stands in against the rush quite well, and probably too well.  He's had several occasions in the first two weeks, and also in the spring game, where he got the ball off directly into the face of a closing defender.  Meaning his throwing arm was releasing through a dangerously close DE/DT that could get that arm in a vulnerable position on impact, or fingers into a facemask.

This is really calling out my ignorance.  I based a good deal of my preseason hopes of an OSU fall on the offense looking like dogshit in their spring game, together with new coach, new DC, new QB, new WRs, new OL.  Then I lol'd at FAU for being terrible.

There was a rhythm to the calling in this game that seemed to put a young QB at ease.  And there were some nice play designs.  The wide open WRs made me think hey, they're probably wide open because Day got them that way.  It's possible both FAU and Cincy suck.  But more likely, Day saw the defense and knew they'd do this thing under that scenario, and did a thing that got a guy wide open against that.  And he's been known as an elite play caller for some time now.

The one thing I most like about Ryan Day is as an offensive tactician. We all know a great coordinator does not necessarily make a good head coach, so I've reserving my judgment about Day as a HC. But his ability to work the Xs & Os on offense is top notch.

He's done plenty of play-calling the past 2 years, don't think FAU & Cincy are his first games as a play-caller. He had the team clicking this well the first 3 games of last season when he was calling all the shots on the sideline. Yes, stiffer competition is ahead (like you mentioned: MSU), we'll know more then.

But of all the potential reasons Day might fail as HC, the thing about Day I am LEAST concerned about is his offensive play-calling.

In order for Warrinner to take the fall for '15 MSU and Clemson in the '16 playoffs, would mean Urban had little to do with play calling.

With that being true, one can assume Day made a majority of the game plans last year. He did an exceptional job and will sadly for us continue to going forward.

OSU's luck with having all-star college QBs just continues. Meanwhile our 4 and 5 star QBs play like 2 stars.

Michigan in a nutshell this century.

They have such good QBs around their program its fucked

They just had JT Barrett, Dwayne Haskins, and Joe Burrow on the same damn squad. Burrow currently sitting 54/66 9TD/1INT on the season

And then the one year they were going to have a down year at QB they pull in a super star transfer from Georgia -_-

Hey come on, I enjoy these because it gives me something to argue against, and now you're giving me nothing!

To your Pete Werner point: He has essentially become a safety/LB hybrid in this defense and is playing all the reps that OSU fans figured would go to Brendon White. OSU is only playing one safety most of the time, essentially having three corners (Okudah, Arnette, Wade) and Fuller on the field, with Werner bailing to deep safety if they try to blitz Wade. We'll see if White plays more against Indiana, a true spread team with talent (?), or if we should just expect him to get 15-20 snaps a game and that's it. Werner has played the most snaps so far of any defender (I think).

Regardless, the defense is confirming everything OSU fans hoped would happen: fundamental football by a bunch of top 100 recruits. Early returns are exactly in line with those expectations.

Fields throws a significantly better ball than Pryor, but that's a decent comparison. I think Pryor was a faster runner, but neither of them have moves in the open field. Fields almost looks clunky trying to juke around. However, he has great pocket elusiveness. Fields definitely isn't a Braxton-style explosive runner. I think a better comparison is a poor man's Cam Newton at Auburn. He won't have Cam's rushing numbers, but he should match his passing numbers with ~800ish rushing yards and ~12ish TDs. That'll be cool!

No. Damon Arnette is a pure corner. Wade is the "safety," however, in this new defense, he's playing essentially a third "corner" role. It's like a supercharged version of the Vonn Bell/Damon Webb position under Chris Ash's cover 4. Those two guys had to play a lot of man in Ash's cover 4 and Schiano's cover 1. Now, under Hafley/Mattison, we are running a lot more cover 3, mixed with some of Schiano's cover 1, and almost no cover 4. Fuller remains the deep safety, and Wade is a corner/nickel/slot/safety hybrid player. Wade can get away with the heavier coverage responsibilities, he was a 5 star corner coming out of high school.

Cincy was completely overwhelmed on offense, and I figured their Oline would struggle to hold up v. OSU's DL. I figured their O would get crushed. I didn't expect us to run the ball on them as well as we did, but once you get behind 21-0 you start to give up a bit, and I think that happened there. I wouldn't say Cincy is a bad team, but I wouldn't say they're good either. They looked like an above average G5 team that was totally over-matched immediately.

I am way more interested in seeing how these teams are playing during November, and intend not to draw any conclusions until then.  For those too young to remember, in 1969 OSU annihilated pretty much all of its opponents until the last one, and Michigan lost a couple early games, but by November was smashing its opponents too.  New system with Bo, took time to acclimate.

It is not a prediction.  It is an observation (with an example we should all be familiar with) that you cannot tell what is going to happen in late November by what happens in early September, especially when you are instituting a new system.  So no reason to jump to conclusions about anything just yet.

I suppose this should be included as well: Damon Arnette getting beat deep, though not terrible coverage.  A faster WR gets more separation.  Indiana (and everyone else) should throw at this guy non-stop.

I should also say that my somewhat tongue in cheek doomsday approach above is against the 9-3 expectation I had for OSU preseason.

I do not think OSU beats Michigan.  Right now the line is Michigan -2, and I'd agree with that.  I would have said Michigan -7 preseason.  Of course I'm not despondent about Michigan like much of the board.
