Jaylen Brown possibly down to Cal/Michigan

Submitted by WorldwideTJRob on
Paul Biancardi just said on ESPN Recruiting Nation that sources close to Jaylen Brown's family say his final decision will come down to Cal and Michigan. Just another good sign today that our Bball future is looking bright. All hail Lord Beilein!!!

Jaylen Brown would be great for both Levert and Irvin. Levert was an incredible #2 option to Stauskas #1 in '14. Irvin as a #3 who won't be asked to be the 'main guy' will allow him to get open looks from 3, and easier defensive match-ups to drive to the basket.

Let's also add we have a top-tier pg in Walton, a deadly shooter in Dawkins, a senior leader in Spike (hopefully he's ready), an improved Doyle and Chatman hopefully. Don't forget DJ Wilson coming off injury, and Duncan Robinson coming off transfer. Oh yeah, that Moritz Wagner guy might be pretty good. Am I forgetting anyone? Oh yeah, MAAR, who was at times our best offensive player and defender during the second half of the year.

The potential of this team is unreal!

I choose to believe he is going to Cal. My reasoning behind his is simple; if he goes to Cal I will have no disappointment, if he chooses Michigan I will be fucking ecstatic.

Hopefully the fact that he's got relatives in Michigan ends up holding some weight. Plus his family in Georgia would have a way easier time getting to AA for games. Easy 90ish min flight from ATL, whereas traveling to Berkeley would be a long ass ordeal and expensive.

Why would anyone deliberately choose to play for Cuonzo Martin over John Beilein?  Is this even a choice?  As a likely one and done, why does Cal or any elite acameic instituion make sense?  Michigan at least makes a little more sense as JB is an elite offesnive coach with a track record of developing guys to go higher than expected in the draft, the school has elite facilities and a recent run of being an upper tier program.  Has Brown mentioned why he's so high on Cal?

I think you'd have to be nuts to choose Cal Basketball over Michigan, but I think that's exactly what he's going to do.

I've lived in California for the past 18 years and consider myself more than just a casual college basketball fan. My impression of Cal basketball is that they were good when Jason Kidd was there, but that's basically it. Ben Braun had a nice little run, but they'll always be no better than third fiddle in the Pac-12 to UCLA and Arizona. A quick review of their wiki page reveals this tidbit:

"In Montgomery's second season, the Bears won their first conference title in 50 years."

Um, OKAY. So why would anyone want to play basketball at Cal? I get going to Cal for academics and other stuff, and if basketball is your ticket to that, OK, but if we're strictly talking about just playing basketball, it's baffling.

Mike Montgomery went to the tourney for 10 straight years at Stanford, took them to their first Final Four in 50+ years, then made it back to the Elite Eight four years later (their second run that deep in the tourney in 50+ years).

Then he retired.  A few years later he took the Cal job.  He made the tourney 4 times in 6 seasons.  He had a winning season in conference play every year he was there.  He retired again.

Cuonzo Martin took the Cal job immediately after that and went 7-11 in the Pac-12.

The idea that the Golden Bears have a good coach is kind of up for debate.  The idea that they "now" have a good coach is fucking absurd.  Montgomery > Martin, every day of the week until proven otherwise.

Ivy, what is it you see in Walton that would help Brown?

I'm not saying Walton doesn't have attributes as a player, but what does he do as a point guard exactly? I know people don't believe thier lying eyes when it comes to Spike. He could average 20 assists a game for a season but most Michigan fans would still say they love him BUT... and still think of him as a decent backup. Walton could go his whole career without creating a point for another player with PG skills but he will still be hailed as a great point guard. I don't get it.

My team manager friend insists he'll be an All-American next year. I said as a guy who can be a great passing and penetrating PG? Yes absolutely he said. Ok, but I've just never seen signs of it. I think Zak did more point guardy things in his last few games than Walton has ever done. He created points for other guys when they otherwise would not have existed, that's what we need.

of myself playing on an 8 foot rim. I'm impressed. But seriously, he also reminds me a little of Duke's Justise Winslow the way he takes the ball to the hoop with authority. Surround him with three shooters (Irvin, Dawkins, Walton) and have Doyle set screen after screen for him and he will be POY as a sophomore, if he stays. It's a logjam next year and I'd like to see him apprentice under a senior LeVert. I think you find 30 MPG for him as a frosh. Minutes are going to be a precious commodity next season.

If Brown comes, as others have noted, that would give us an insane amount of subs.

In fact, I'd have to say, we'd have so many subs that it would be... crazy.

I'd be curious to find out what sort of role Beilein envisions for Brown and how he would use him.  He's a player who reminds me a lot of Stanley Johnson at Arizona, and we haven't really had a guy like that in Beilein's system (not a great shot, very strong/athletic, good handle, maybe dominates the ball more than he should/will in Beilein's system, etc.).

Do we play a guy like that at the 4 (or put Irvin there) and remain a small team on D?  Does he play the 2 and handle the ball quite a bit?

Seems like a very talented guy who at the same time I don't really see an immediate fit for on this team (don't see anyone pushing LeVert/Irvin out of the lineup, don't think Coach B wants to keep going small, and I don't know what spot Brown would play).  It will be interesting to see how it plays out, especially if he ends up in Ann Arbor.  So many fun options to think about with this team and all the depth they will have, with or without Brown/WIlliams.

given our roster makeup. Williams is a #2 while Brown is a #3 or #4. The last 3 commits have been 6-10, 6-11 and 6-10. This is added to a team that already has three guys at 6-9 and one at 6-8. Although two of those guys don't get here untill next year, Beilein seems to be going big. Plus Williams will probably be a 3 or 4 year guy and Brown probably a 1 or 2.

That could be big.  If he's willing/interested in staying two years (something I think I heard he said, but if you're going to be a top-10 pick that is hard to turn down) then he could really become a monster in addition to making a huge impact here.  Be the first guy off the bench in year one and learn the system, probably playing multiple spots.  Then replace Caris at the 2 on a team with potentially Walton/Irvin/Robinson/BigGuy in the starting lineup, and a ton of depth and other options.

That lineup would seem to create a great fit for his game and an opportunity to really shine as a college player (rather than just as a NBA potential guy).

Dude. You're crazy. He's not going to come off the bench. There's got to be someone on here who could do an analysis of top five recruits and their freshman year role. I'd be willing to bet that 90% of them start the majority of the games in their freshman year.

Cliff Alexander played 17 mpg at Kansas this past year (he was #4 on the 247 composite).  Mudiay went to China and from what I hear didn't set the world on fire.

Obviously most highly rated guys play, because they commit to teams that need/want them to step in right away.  They don't typically go to schools where a guy has turned down potentially being a late 1st round pick to come back to school.  Ulis and Booker didn't start at Kentucky because the Harrison twins came back.  Our most highly rated guy last year (#27 overall on the composite) was the least productive of our 4 freshmen who were healthy enough to play.

If he's not going to come off the bench it probably means he's not coming here, or people will once again be bitching every time we lose that we have no size and get dominated in the paint.

One can always find exceptions to anything. Mudiay was injured and Alrxander had issues with possible rules violations. I'm a total loser so I went back and looked at the top five recruits from '08-'14. Pretty much all of them started right away and left college after 1 or 2 years.
