Harbaugh "Dirty Jobs" Quote Says it All:

Submitted by w2j2 on

"I know they like to work and I know they like to compete," Harbaugh said of his team Saturday. "They don't mind doing the dirty work and they enjoy each other's company.

"You start getting that ... and I don't know, maybe the sky's the limit. Who knows? Just move on with a humble heart and keep grinding."

"It's coming," Harbaugh said Saturday afternoon, less than an hour after his team humiliated No. 22 BYU, 31-0, at Michigan Stadium. "It's coming together."

I like it because this seems typically Harbaugh. His team soundly beats a ranked team 31-0, and it is "coming together". When it comes together then, "wow" potentially, but then that's the idea, right?

I wonder if that Harbaugh quote was inspired by a Nicki Minaj tweet.

When I googled the OP's quote, the following tweet showed up:

IIRC, Harbaugh tweeted at Nicki Minaj earlier this year.

It is just inspiring to read how Coach Harbaugh approaches competition, hard work, etc. I am not saying this because we beat BYU.

Sky is the limit, indeed. Beat Sparty and Buckeyes, boys!

I remember watching the men's team the year the reached number #1 in the rankings. They had Beilein mic'd up for the game and Coach Carr was sitting in the front row. Before the game, Beilein went over and shook hands with Carr and exchanged a few words. Since he was mic'd, they replayed the conversation. Carr said something about quite the team he's put together or something along those lines and the first thing Beilein said back was, "and they really like each other." I thought it was strange that that would be the first thing to say so I remember that vividly. And now here's Harbaugh saying something similar. I guess liking each other really goes along way toward building a successful team. Seems obvious enough, but I wouldn't think it was one of the most important.

Team chemistry is huge. Some teams pull together faster than others. Some play selfless rather than selfish. Texas, for example, has the coaching and talent but from what I've seen and heard they still haven't bought into Strong's system whole heartedly (though played much better the last couple of weeks, sort of).

Do they enjoy each other's company only in a football way? Or in general?

Seriously, though, intangibles like relationships, confidence, and common vision matter so much in all organizations.

Sure they did. Both were Athenians who were Spartan sympathizers at a time when Athens was engaged in a series of hot and cold wars with Sparta. Despite what schoolkids are told, Socrates was put on trial because his former students overthrew the Athenian democracy and instituted a Spartan-style oligarchy on two different occasions. Alcibiades, another of Socrates former students, defected to Sparta and fought with them against Athens.

I love this. I think one of the best things that could have happened yesterday was the second half. First half is for today to celebrate and cherish. The second half looked like practice and it shows what this team still need to improve. Looking forward to improvement where we can put the second string in and we still demolish the opponent.

Good article. But I'd like to point out a fact. We are allowing 9.5 points per game, not 12.7 as the article says. Just to show how dominant this defense has been this season. This coming against the likes of undefeated Utah that just put up 60 on Oregon, and a BYU team that came in averaging 400 yards per game and 30 points per game against the likes of Nebraska, Boise State, and UCLA. Not to mention, or DEFENSE is only allowing 7.75 points per game (Utah had a pick 6). This is shaping up to be an absolutely dominating defense. If the offense can maintain a good level of efficiency, the sky really could be the limit for this team. This is the exact type of team Michigan needs to be. Smothering defense, bruising running game, and a QB who doesn't have to go out and win games for you. Just make the simple play, move the ball forward methodically, and don't give the game away.

Do you (or anyone else) have the time to put together this type of stats for MSU and OSU through week four and possibly going forward? This made a lot more sense to me than straight stat sheets, and I think it would be a nice addition to the Board if we could compare our two biggest rivals week to week. The "Eye Test" tells me OSU and MSU are not as far ahead of us as everyone thinks, and I think your way of explaining it puts that "Eye Test" into something more substantial and factual.

Yeah awesome post. I would really like to see some comparisons to the 97 defense. I'm not saying this squad is at that level but it doesn't feel far off. There is no Woodson on the field, Peppers isn't there yet, but it feels as dominating and I'd bet the yards per game/Pts per game have got to be fairly close.

I thought when I saw this thread that Harbaugh was quoting the Norm McDonald movie. It seems appropriate:

Mitch: There are two kinds of people in this world: those who get stomped, and those that do the stomping.

Kathy: Where'd you come up with that theory?

Mitch: Some famous guy said it. What's his name? Uh...oh yeah: Jesus!

"I'm starting to know our team," adds Harbaugh. "And I'm liking what I'm knowing."

That's not a trivial quote.  Think of some of the teams Harbaugh has "known" at Stanford and the 49ers.

This is becoming a Harbaugh team, and much faster than I thought it would after watching them sputter against Utah.

The quote is also not trivial because it says that the team had to prove themselves to Harbaugh. Harbaugh seems to command that sort of reaction. Which appears to be a change from the last regime that seemed to take the team where they were, not ask them to prove themselves, and then even asked the fans to prove themselves to the team.

Have been awfully positive, encouraging, and it's not just coachspeak. He's not promising anything - but he's gone out of his way to talk about how he likes the progress...it's something I've picked up on but had to see for myself.

We're a solid football team and they built a foundation this fall that is noticable.

BYU coach Mendenhall after rattling off the names of 5-7 players who left the game hurt:

"They are a big, physical, tough football team and our injuries reflected that."

It is a fine morning.
