Happy Video: O'Korn Freshman Highlight Video

Submitted by Indonacious on

I felt the board needed something positive to see, so here is a re-post of O'Korn's freshman year highlights that got so many people excited and feeling that he should be the starter to begin with before the emergence of Speight.

Speight has played well though and deserved his accolades. If O'Korn is up to the task these next 5 games.....we will have a controversy on our hands. I still feel O'Korn has the higher ceiling.

Starting Quarterback =/= Highest ceiling. Let's talk Shane Morris if you want to talk high ceilings.

Your QB more than any other position is a CBA decision by the coaches. Who has the greatest expected returns in terms of moving the offense, not turning the ball over, extending plays, etc. Sometimes A+ potential is not better than a B+ guarantee if that A+ potential also comes with more frequent C minuses.

Don't read into what Jim thinks about potential based on who our starter is/was. O'Korn playing to his potential is a quarterback that many teams could win a national title with.

Time for O'Korn to step up and to see what he is made of. Nothing like being thrown into the fire to see how good you are. Hopefully we have a controversy going into next year. Foward! Beat Indiana!

I think we'll be okay. If he has a better pocket presence and can not turn the ball over maybe we won't miss much of a step. I was hard on Wilton at first but he really improved. He still wasn't huge in high pressured situations though.

I think Speight's the better pocket QB.  He's got the better arm and obviously the size advantage that helps him fend off the rush.  However, Speight's weaknesses almost all stem from his footwork issues under pressure.  I hope O'Korn is better in that facet of the game.

My biggest complaint of O'Korn is he has Chad Henny syndrome; the instant he feels pressure he tends to tuck the ball and try to run with it, instead of staying behind the LOS and looking downfield for receivers who've got open.  Speight does that better.

Though, when Speight did this on Saturday he twice fired bullets into receiver's facemasks, so maybe tucking and running isn't always bad.  For "Team O'Korn" or the fans who always seem to love the backup QB, here's O'Korn's chance.  Personally, like all of us I bet, I hope UM steamrolls IU, then O'Korn leads UM to victory over OSU and Wisconsin in Indianapolis.

When pressure came, Henne tucked and ran, rather than try to keep the pass alive by staying behind the LOS.  When he left the pocket, it was to tuck and run rather than to try to stay behind the line.  It was something I and a lot of people figured he'd improve on and fix by his senior year, but it just never came.

And I guess I wasn't the only one who picked up on this...

From Henne's NFL.com Draft Profile:

"Will step up to avoid the rush, but will tuck the ball and run too early..."

(And O'Korn has this same problem.  Look at the spring game footage in addition to some of the UH highlights that are out there.)

Obviously, we're talking about the same Chad Henne.  Rushing yard totals are immaterial I think when we're just discussing his propensity for giving up on the pass too soon and trying to run rather than scramble to extend the play behind the line while keeping his eyes downfield.  I remember commenting on it, you don't.  That in and of itself is fine.  But I've found documentation of others whose job it is to watch these guys who support my observation.

And just for fun, and yes, I understand that sacks count and it's difficult to get a clear picture on this, but...

Henne: 180 rushing attempts in 47 games, 3.83 rushes/game

Speight: 28 in 15 games, 1.87/game

Navarre: 144 in 46 games, 3.13 rushes/game

Henson: 60 in 24, 2.5/game

O'Korn has this same issue, though he's obviously a bit faster.  I just hope it's something he's improved upon under Harbaugh and company more than Henne did under Carr.

for an injury question: on which exact play did Speight's injury occur? I saw him trot off the field late in the 4th holding his left wrist/hand, but for some reason have the impression that he hurt his left shoulder or collarbone somewhat earlier.

His mobility will help against OSU. Not saying Speight being hurt is a blessing in disguise at all. I just think the OSU game is one where the QB is going to have to play to the height of his ceiling for us to win. I still feel O'Korn has a higher ceiling. We will find out. A full Indiana game is a great luxury to have.

O'Korn has a quicker release than Speight and is more mobile.  He does seem to try to make plays even when they aren't there, but in a game against a tough defense he can make a difference both ways, where Harbaugh chose to try to develop Speight because his basement was higher in that he does a good job of protecting the ball.  Against these next two defenses it might be good to have someone who can make something out of nothing, but that can backfire, too.  I like the fact that O'Korn has a ton of motivation to play well and so does the team.  If O'Korn makes a difference in the next two games it will present Harbaugh with a welcome tough choice.

pretty sure okorn and the team have plenty of motivation to play well, at least i certainly hope so given the amount of time, energy, emotion, etc invested by all involved.  obviously they dont always play well and some guys have letdown moments / games but i doubt those rooms lack motivation

He is still going to have the rest of our offense, much of which is elite, and one of the best defenses in the country.  Man, I wish our fanbase didn't freak out so quickly.

It's tough not to freak out when you have a senior laden team and this might be the only time in the next 2-3 years that you have a legitimate shot at beating OSU when their team is mighty young.

Michigan fans/alums my age don't remember Michigan ever being competitive with OSU. The 90s seem like an eternity ago.

It isn't like we aren't going to have a team next year.  Several returning RBs, McDoom, several D-Lineman, including a stronger and year older Rashan Gary, Speight, Jeremy Clark's sixth year.  The cupboard is very clearly not bare.

Edit: We are going to be competitive with OSU from here on out.  I don't think this fanbase has gotten accustomed to the fact that we are going to have top 5 recruiting classes with terrific player development going forward. I know it's a big thing to wrap your mind around.

I want the championship this year too, and I still think we have a great shot.  O'Korn is not a shit QB.  And he still has the rest of this team to play with.

#3 WR was also featured prominently....

I hope that #82 and #86 and #88 can be the guys in this years highlight video.  Darboh seems to mostly be doing it, I hope Chesson can regain 2k15 form as well.   Get separation and Okorn seems like he can find it, which is excellent.

The offensive design and playcalls have in my mind done wonders for the QB in terms of getting guys open, not to take away anything from Speight, but it all has to work together to be successful.  I think if Okorn can make the throws and especially the deep homerun ball, we have an outstanding chance at quieting road-crowds all over America.  It took Rudock a little bit to get that timing down last season but once he got it we were extremely dangerous downfield, and I'd love to see that return.
