Finally espn acknowledges this is about more than Saturday.

Submitted by Canadian on
About half way down the story (which now recaps tonight's protest) someone finally makes mention that we are pissed at DB for more than what has happened this week.

Galloway's comments that a coach doesn't evaluate head injuries COMPLETELY misses the point. The head coach is supposed to be in charge. He is supposed to be watching his players (teenagers who have committed 4-5 years of their lives to him) and taking care of them. Once he saw Morris stumbling around and nearly collapsing, he should have called a timeout and pulled Morris. Morris may be "tough," but he's a KID. Then Hoke could have gotten him to medical personnel who could evaluate him.

I am having trouble understanding how the 2-3 record and the malfeaseance seen in the past 3 days is not connected.  This is all one big shitshow.  If this team were 2-3 and this didn't happen we wouldn't be all up in arms.  If this team was 5-0 and this did happen we would be pissed but no protest.  It's the huge amalgamation of incompetence both on and off the field that has turned this into what it is.  Someone like Howard probably understands that but my guess is that he doesn't do himself any good supporting the actions of the protesters.

If we were competent enough to be 5-0 and still screwed up with allowing Morris to play with a concussion, we would have admitted the mistake on Sunday, announced changes in our policies, suspended Hoke for a game as a token gesture and moved on.  That's probably enough to have quelled this, possibly even given the current state of the program and the fanbase's opinion of Brandon.

Instead, we got the incompetent, secretive, inconsistent, obfuscating response we did, which has become all too recognizable during the administration of Dave Brandon.

And if we had done things the same way at 5-0?  I brooded and I would have supported a 1-2 game suspension for Hoke.  While this issue may be symptomatic, it's not really the end of the world and wouldn't merit a firing (unlike what I thought on Saturday).

Now, to be fair, I saw plenty of comments from fans of other schools (including some that would presumably want Hoke around for practical reasons) that Hoke should be fired for what he did on Saturday.  I'm not sure that I see nearly as many of those when it appears that Hoke was painfully ignorant rather than throwing out Shane as a sacrificial lamb/to make a point/TOUGHNESS.

slide in the football program since 2011 which has led us to 4-9 in the last 13 with wins over mighty Indiana, Northwestern, Applachian St., Miami, Ohio and looking completely out of our league most of the time against other 'power 5' schools.  That is why Brady should be fired.

For Brandon its raising ticket prices and seat donations at least once, raising concessions prices by 25%, the intolerable in game atmosphere inside Michigan Stadium, the band to Texas fiasco, the screwing over of hockey season ticket holders by moving a game to Chicago after payment, the condescending way he responds to emails, his treatment and alienation of the student body.  The repeated "miscommunation" excuses for anything and the "we'll learn" plan of action when something goes wrong.  1am press release when he should have standing at the damn microphone Monday afternoon or even earlier.

Its kind of everything with Dave, because other than fundraising and being in charge of a few capital building projects that have turned out very nice I really can't see much that Dave has done well.

I don't really get this. Wasn't Gibbons released from the team the minute the committee passed down its final judgement?  And that it took so long because 1) the police didn't originally press charges which meant it didn't meet the threshold for expulsion in 2009 and 2) they finally changed the threshold in 2013 because of Title IX?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending Gibbons at all.  But didn't Hoke follow the rules here?

I went to elementary school with a guy named Ryan Cook. In 2nd grade, he lied to me and said the Red Wings beat the Penguins 105-101 the night before, and I wrote it in my journal. I still feel stupid for believing him.

Quick to point out the mob mentality of the fans, but fails to realize that this whole protest was an mgoblog post picked up by mlive then picked up by ESPN. Maybe the industry that he works for now is partly to blame here, not just the mobbing fans.

It is about time that there was a story which at least mentions the notion that it is a cultural issue to which people object and that the relations nightmare of the last few days is something which underscores it in a manner which gives it a voice that must be heard. In simpler terms, this athletic department has to change its culture and personnel if anyone of note is to come to Michigan. I think the mishandling of Shane Morris but also everything related to what happened to him gives these many cultural issues in the department a very loud, tangible voice, if you will.

I agree that this would not have blown up (certainly not to this degree) if the football team were 5-0. But that is missing the tree for the forest.

It's important to consider the fashionable term, "optics". A 5-0 team, in most circumstances, doesn't look like yakity sax on the football field, doesn't make stupid mistakes associated with clock management, doesn't consistently demonstrate poor awareness of mundane (even banal) details like how many men are on the field for a play. In other words, it appears to be in command of the game. What happened to Morris this past Saturday would have been seen as a one-off mistake, not likely to happen again, all other things being equal. Sure, there would have been some recriminations, but nothing to the degree we're now seeing.

Yes, I know that last year, the football team began the season 5-0. However, there was  already plenty of evidence that it required more than a bit of luck to get to that record. Penn State, the next week, exposed the deficiencies. We only won two more games during the remainder of the season, requiring minor miracles to achieve both.

Because of the poor on-field product and the off-field, bewildering (even misleading) statements by the head coach, the optics show a coach and his staff totally out of their depth and out of control. In that case, the Morris incident appears to be at best a case of negligence. The circumstances make it appear to many that his inability to stay ahead of the game are endangering player safety. If the quotes from the Terry Foster article are true, then that is, unfortunately, the case.

You wouldn't want a pilot to command a commercial airliner who couldn't remain "ahead of the airplane", which is flying terminology for maintaining situational awareness. The same is true for Hoke. I makes me sad to say so because I believe he loves this university and his team.

Does the university fire him now or wait? In reality, an argument could be made for either. If it were possible to let him continue being on the sidelines and teaching (which he claims he is trying to do first and foremost) while transferring in-game decision making to one of his assistants, then perhaps there is an opportunity to keep him until the end of the season. If not, then let's get on with the inevitable so that the path forward is clear to everyone including potential recruits.

with all of this from here on out for Michigan. I'm reading comments with people arguing that "it's not that bad" and "it's being blown way out of proportion".

Let's face it.  Brandon and Hoke aren't going anywhere for the next 2 months.

Meanwhile, the national media is going to be feasting on this festering carcass of a program & laundry list of fiascos (D. Brandon miscalculations and obfuscations, Brady Hoke incompetence, Michigan football losses and general opponent Schadenfreude) for another eight or 10 weeks.  The president, regents and certain alumns still have their heads way up their asses about why its happening. This is not going to blow over or crawl away to die quietly.   I just foresee an endless freight train of negative shit coming down the tracks with no fucking brakes.

I fear that varied perceptions are gonna tear the community apart some more:

I just read this tweet by Denard Robinson:
