Exit Dan Enos?

Submitted by ish on

earlier there was a report that saban was trying to poach dan enos that sam webb quickly dismissed with a "he's not going anywhere."  yet 15 minutes ago he changed his tune and now says the story is legit.  he's not saying enos is gone, but that his departure is a real possibility.

Can identify mistakes, correct, and move on...evidence suggests JHhas been successful at every level. If pep is retained I believe it will be in a much reduced role. The o line stuff that came out about Drev last week has me thinking Coach had that uncomfortable talk with an old friend. Time to focus what your good, which isn’t game planning apparently Enos should have a much bigger say title not withstanding.

If you read your 1st sentence (before the ...), why can't Pep or Drevno learn from their mistakes last year and fix them?

I think we can all agree that the primary issue for the offense was bad playcalling, followed by a complicated Offense (magnified by a lack of experience). Why can't Harbaugh, Pep, Drevno figure out which dude will be the primary playcaller and keep the complicated Offense (given the # of returning starters)?

can you do me a solid?  You hate U of M as much as I do right?  So I'll get an offer from Harbaugh (who can't land Lawrence Tech's Offensive Coordinator right now) and then you can offer me a job too and I'll either ratchet up the salary and tank their program or I can embarass them and come work for you?  Whatcha say?

Nick Saban:  Let me as Finebaum.  13 second later..Finebaum says good plan!

Seriously if we can't offer a guy and keep him for a few weeks, we have issues.

If Bama's offense isn't anything special, I would love to hear your thought on Michigan's offense. The fact is Bama's offense doesn't turn it over, they protect the QB, and they run the hell out of the ball. We can only dream of having an offense as good as theirs next year.

If you know what he was saying, why did you twist his words around into something he clearly didn’t say, and ignore what he actually said? He’s really not wrong in the sense that their coaching on the offensive side of the ball isn’t all that spectacular. It’s not. They’re very good. Mostly due to adding 3-4 5*s to that side of the ball every year for the past decade. I mean. When Najee Harris is your 4th string running back behind guys who were top OL recruits, you’re going to be pretty good. Not due to anything special from the coaches. But just flat out being vastly more talented than the team across from you. Before you go twisting words again, that doesn’t mean their offensive coaches are bad coaches. Just that there’s nothing special about what they do that makes their offense successful.

Yes and no. When you’re talking about groups, yes, they matter. Getting an entire class full of high 4* and 5* guys is going to produce better results 99% of the time. When you’re talking about an individual recruit, no they don’t matter. These guru’s miss on guys all the time. They overvalue recruits and they flat out miss on very good players that never get the proper ranking. There’s a ton that goes into a recruit’s ranking. So people like you that get upset every time Michigan recruits a three star are pretty ignorant. For starters, you really only get ranked if you attend camps. If you don’t attend many camps, you don’t get the exposure. You don’t get the exposure, the guru’s can’t rank you. I believe it was Ronnie Bell who committed and a number of guru’s came out and said they haven’t actually seen the kid play so they haven’t properly evaluated him. That doesn’t mean he’s a low 3* recruit. Then there’s the fact that these camps are all about flash. It’s about who looks best in t-shirts and shorts. Who is the fastest. Who can jump the highest. Who looks good in 7-on-7. Really, a whole lot of stuff that doesn’t actually determine who the best football players actually are. Teams like MSU and Wisconsin have made a living by finding these kids that dont show out at these camps because they’re not the fastest guys or they’re not the strongest. But when they put that helmet on, they’re flat out good football players. At the end of the day, getting good football players is what it’s all about. What people like you need to realize, is that even more important than what a kid is ranked, is WHY he’s ranked the way he is. Is Ronnie Bell a low 3* because he’s not good, or because the scouts haven’t watched him play? Is Michael Barrett a mid 3* because hes average, or is it that he’s the player of the year in Georgia’s top division and scouts haven’t pinned which position he’s playing. You get upset every time Michigan goes after a kid who isn’t ranked high. It’s stupid. It’s ignorant. And it’s flat out misinformed. If these scouts were so good at evaluating and finding talent, they would have jobs at some of the top schools. Anybody can look at guys like Rashan Gary and say he’s one of the top recruits in his class. That part is easy. When it comes to players farther down the list, I’ll take the opinion of guys like Jim Harbaugh who actually know the game and know what they’re looking for in a player.

Alabama's offense, save for 2016 under Kiffin, is perfectly adequate, in that top 25-35 range. They turn the ball over at an average-ish rate but force an immense number of turnovers, which is why they have a really nice TO margin. In 2016 Michigan had 7 less TOs than the Tide but had a worse margin because their defense forced 10 more TOs, something they do pretty consistently. Last year they had only 10 TOs, but their offense was much more conservative and, in a number of ways, worse overall. It just didn't matter because of nobody they faced could move the ball against them consistently. Michigan's offense can be very good when it's not incredibly young. Alabama has a very good offense, and can be spectacular, when Saban allows it and they have a good OC. Enos is a good hire and would be a very good OC at Michigan. But I think Michigan should aspire to have a more dynamic offense than Alabama.

is I read Enos had a clause in his Arkansas contract that prevented him from leaving for other SEC schools and Arkansas actually used it to prevent Smart from talking to him about UGA.  Could he have left Arkansas, just to have that contract bought out, and move to another SEC school?

Not sure if going to Michigan would make this possible, and of course, this is way early, but if he goes to Bama and coming to UM first allowed him to do that, that is same shaaaaady stuff.

I've had worse takes that that one.

Serious question: What role did we think Enos was going to be in here, and how compelling did we think he was going to be in it?

Was he going to be our OC savior?

Is he now going to be Saban's OC?  Or just a position coach?

Are we getting all spun up about just a position coach?

says Enos was all that good of a coach?  Comments here indicated the opposite.

He gets props for recruiting, apparently.  Especially QBs.  But we have QBs.   If Enos is a magical QB coach, I wouldn't expect to have read all the negatives about his offenses in his other jobs.

Because he’s the worst poster on the board. He actually has a couple good posts every now and then, but he’s such a condescending prick that no one cares. There are plenty of good posters and good points made here that no one wants to put up with his assholery just to get to one of his good points

Mostly because when you hire a new coach, you let him hire his own staff. Only the Lions force assistant coaches on a new head coaching hire. Like when Hoke was fired, he was allowed to make his own coaching hires. He wasn’t forced to keep Mattison as a DC because Mattison had a top 10 defense, he brought in his own DC and elected to offer Mattison the DL coaching job.

what his contract says. You would think there would be some clause in his contract about leaving early to accept another coaching job. I know coaches break contracts all the time, but usually they are fined for it.

Word has been he hit the ground running when he got here and has been recruiting his ass off. This would be a very strange development if true.
