Detroit News report: Drevno interested in talking to WMU about HC job

Submitted by KO Stradivarius on

I just saw this article by Lynn Henning stating the "Detroit News has learned" that Coach Tim Drevno is interested in discussing the Western Michigan Univ. Head Coach position, citing "multiple scouts as well as an industry source familiar with Drevno's view of the WMU job".

Very carefuly worded but Lynn Henning is a veteran reporter and columnist, and therefore it could have some merit.  Of course, Coach Drevno just recently signed a 5 year contract extension, but it would appear he still has HC aspirations.

EDIT:   Two other candidates are mentioned:  Mel Tucker - Georgia DC;  Jeff Hafley - 49'ers DB coach,

I am in no way saying that Harbaugh actually was or wasn't satisfied with Fisch. Just making an assumption for notetoself as t seemed rather obvious that the only person above Fisch would be Harbaugh. That's all. Pure speculation. In fact, Schmoe's comment was the first time I had ever heard that Fisch was told to look elsewhere. I don't even think it's true, but doesn't matter now either way.

Wow.  Didn't mean to imply I had a source other than the internet itself, in places other than this domain.  You don't have to look too hard.  When looking how things were done under Bo, he was probably told to see if he can't find something.  It doesn't play out in the media.  That's how it's done except Saban.  No grenade geez.

No matter who the OC is, it's still Harbaugh's offense.  It's actually good for him to change OC's failry often because he isn't afraid to add someone else's plays to his playbook.  Michigan will be fine no matter who the OC is.

The "worst case scenario" is that Harbaugh's offense still works great and he adds another HC to his growing "coaching tree."

I have the same level of comfort with our OC position. As long as Harbs is around the floor is high. My only concern is packages like the Pep zone reads. That wasn't changed before it got stale and I'm wondering how that happened. I'd like to think it was mainly Jedd's fault and now we can move on, but that was kinda concerning.

when well-regarded Michigan assistants think following the guy who went 13-1 in Kalamazoo is a good career move. Good luck recruiting there long-term.

Fleck replaced Bill Cubit, who was fired after compiling a 51-47 record at WMU. Fleck's first season was 1-11, but in his subsequent three seasons went 29-11. That's what Bronco fans are going to regard as the baseline he established, and it was a solid trajectory upward overall.

I'm not saying that Wheatley can't be successful there, but it's very likely that his first season out of the gate at WMU will be a step down—how many programs at any level go undefeated in two successive regular seasons with two different coaches? And even if Ty goes 10-2 in his first season, he'll still be under pressure during his second season to not have a further step down—if they then went 8-5 in year two (which would still be a good season at WMU historically)‚ you can be sure that at least a portion of the fanbase in Kazoo will start grumbling, however illogical that might be.

Just for historical comparison: Bo had the good fortune not to follow Ara Parseghian at Miami of Ohio; Ara went 39-6-1, the best winning percentage in Miami history. Instead, Bo followed John Pont, whose tenure at Miami was a slow slide down from the lofty record that Parseghian had established. The expectations of the Miami fanbase at the time Bo took over from Pont were different from what they were when Pont took over for Parseghian.

I think it would make more sense for Wheatley to get some time as an OC under his belt first, and to do it at a Power 5 program.

I disagree.  There are some good recruits in the last couple classes and WMU should be set up for continued success.  Yes, 13-1 probably doesn't happen again, but as far as MAC-level jobs go, this is a pretty good one to take.  The bad jobs to take are the ones where it's a fluke year that gets the MAC coach a Purdue level job, but the fundementals of the program are in the crapper.

Butch Jones rode well-built programs by Brian Kelly to a premier job at Tennessee, while arguably harming the fundementals of the two programs he took over.
