Hard for me to disagree with the guy. The basketball team is in the Final Four with mostly middling recruits, but coached by a man who is clearly one of the best, most underrated coaches in the game. Michigan Hockey also happens to be in the Frozen Four with a first year head coach after several down years. They're getting results and winning big games. They're beating their rivals. They're each two games away from a national title.

Harbaugh is not at that level right now. 1-5 against his rivals, and half of the offense (an area he's supposed to be an expert in) is a disaster. Close games don't mean shit. History remembers the final score. Yes there are some extenuating circumstances, but there are no more excuses as of next season. The talent is there, you have arguably the best DC in America, you have a man who's coached offensive lines that bulldozed Alabama en route to a national title, you have two five star QBs in the stable, everything you need to win right now.

I don't care how hard the schedule is next year. The best teams go on the road and win. They don't shoot themselves in the foot week after week and beat themselves. I know Harbaugh can build a team that wins the big games. He's proven he can do it. But it's failed to come to fruition here so far.

Here's to him making me look like a fool next Fall.

Exactly right WD. RR and Hoke years have created such anxiety with this fan base that we can't even let Harbaugh just do his job. Last year was a major disapointment. Most of us expected  it to be a down year..losing all our QBs and the offense shitting the bed made it worse than expected. But if people can't see the improvements in this program, and can be triggered by any media blow hard clickbait, I just can't help you. In year 2 of Harbaugh we got one of the best seasons of Michigan football we've seen in years. I am chosing to remain patient and hopeful we will get things straightened out this year

Uhm, the first part of this is a horrible take.  I'm not an advocate for either coach, but RR and Hoke were also subject to the very unrealistic expectations and impatience of Michigan fans.  They clearly are not responsible for creating it.  One would even argue that Carr was subject to it too and he was what, our 3rd winningest coach?

No doubt in my mind that Harbaugh will get his program rolling. None. Anyone who doubts that just likes self-flagellation.

The anxiety that some express is due to the fact they care more about how outsiders perceive the program rather than the truth. Fuck all of them. So called fans included.

I do believe in patience with him, mostly because if you want to fire him (and I DO NOT want to), who are you going to get that's any better?

I think the problem is that when he came in, all the hype that surrounded him made a good majority of us think that things would be fixed, and fixed fast. Beating OSU, re-taking control of the state against MSU, elite QB play and an OL that destroys worlds. So far, that hasn't happened and people are beginning to panic because what they saw on the offense this year almost could've been what they saw in 2013-14 and they wouldn't have noticed much of a difference.

He does deserve more time, and I shouldn't have compared football to basketball results. Two different games and sets of circumstances. But its hard to look at next year's schedule (and the current state of the other top 3 programs in our division) and not be at least a little nervous. What happens if Harbaugh goes 8-4 again next season, which is a very real possibility given the schedule? What if the offense doesn't improve, or only improves marginally?

The chatter about what results Harbaugh will bring to Michigan, whether or not he'll ever beat OSU, whether he'll ever win a truly big game, will only get louder if that kind of season unfolds next year.

Read BuckNekked's post right above yours. Then read your last two paragraphs here.

You're so afraid of what rival fans are going to say about Harbaugh that it has restricted your ability to enjoy your own team. Come on, man. 2018 hasn't happened yet. You have no idea what's in store.

Blake O'Neill's dropped punt has nothing to do with this year. DJ Durkin's 2015 defense has nothing to do with this year. JT was short and that spot has nothing to do with this year. Wilton Speight's injury has nothing to do with this year. Tim Drevno has nothing to do with this year. John O'Korn, bless his heart, has nothing to do with this year. And the dickbag fans wearing green or scarlet most certainly have nothing to do with us this year.

Since Ed Warinner was hired, essentially spelling the end for Tim Drevno at Michigan, the hockey and basketball teams are a combined 22-0-1 and both in their respective Final Four. If you want to believe in mystical bullshit, believe in that.

As Jim Harbaugh said at Crisler on his first day:  "All that I ask is...Everybody that's for us, is for us."

You're worried about people that are not for us.

It’s hard for you to disagree with him because 1) you apparently didn’t know Harbaugh has won 28 games in his first 3 years here (which is more than Dantonio did his first three years for example) and 2) you’ve already penciled in losses next year and held those against Harbaugh. Ugh, what a horrible post

Please explain to me where I said that I've already penciled in losses for next season. I never said that once, but I don't know how you can dispute that next year's schedule isn't brutal. @OSU, where we haven't won in nearly 20 years, @ MSU, who appears to have re-found their footing, and @ ND, with what may very likely be a first time-starting QB in primetime. Then you add PSU and UW to the mix, luckily home games, but they're both possibly top-10 when they come to town. Could Michigan win all of those games? Sure, but the odds are against them on that one, pal. Hell, odds are against OSU for winning all their games next year.

I'm just stating facts as I see them, and the facts are that Harbaugh hasn't won big games yet. I'm not talking about beating a hapless Florida team in the BWW bowl or a Penn State team that hadn't yet figured how to get its head out of its ass. I'm talking about nationally-recognized, program-defining wins. He's come close, and while we probably can't realistically compare basketball results to football results, I'm calling a spade a spade.

Not saying Harbaugh should be fired or should be on the hot seat. I believe if he can't get the job done, no one can. But let's be honest: the results that we all thought would be there by now when he was hired are not.

This board gets all up in its feelings about everything. I'm making a fucking observation about the general difficulty of the schedule next year. That's not a cynical, glass-half-empty take. That's an objective take.

If you believe they'll win every game next year, that's your prerogative. My OPINION is they won't. That doesn't make me an asshole or a bad fan. That just means I think the schedule is tough next year and going on the road to play what may be three top-10 teams at the time we play them and EXPECTING to win is a tall order for any team not named Alabama. Hell, I don't expect OSU to go undefeated next season.

This is going to be some DISRESPEKT, but I'm not among the people belieivng that MSU is totally back to being a premiere program in the conference. They went 3-9 in 2016 and last year, well...

Lose by 20 @Notre Dame and by 45 @ Ohio State.

Iowa? Won by 7 at home.

at Michigan? Won by 4 in a weird game with Michigan's backup QB.

at Minnesota? Won by 3

vs Indiana? Won by 8

vs Penn State? Won by 3.

vs Maryland? Won by 10.

So, yeah, 5-1 in games decided by one score (with that one loss being a comeback to force OT against Northwestern). I had a diary post after last season which pointed out that Dantonio has been abnormally lucky in close games over his tenture. Now, unless he's got some super secret sauce that he uses to win close games, that will revert to the mean at some point.

You're missing the fundamental problem with the article, which is that after year 3, Beilein's program looked nothing like it does today.  He had had two losing seasons out of three and it seemed like we were headed for disaster with Sims and Harris moving on.

Heck, three years ago we went 16-16 in basketball.  Even last season a lot of Michigan fans wanted Beilein fired.  And now these same people are using his success to bash Harbaugh.

Bacon is right: some people in this fanbase aren't happy unless they're unhappy.

That is a strong (and probably errant) statement. Has he specifially SAID he hates Michigan? Or does he just now bow down in abject worship? Or does he dare offer opinions that Groupthink doesn't like? Or even worse, is he even-handed in his assessments of just how mediocre things have been here for two decades?

I'd like to see links to this so-called hate or I'm gonna have to label this board talk as "paranoid illusions of grandeur"--as if Dodd, like message board guys, allows entities he has no control over to rent out space in his mind for free.

When you don't have much creativity in your writing, you might as well get eyeballs with shitty takes.

Beilein is great.  So is Harbaugh.  So is Mel, Hutchm, etc.  It is an embarrassment of riches at UM right now.

Basically this was a article designed to take a cheap shot at Jim Harbaugh...Cant just stick to basketball...HAD to take a shot at Harbaugh so whats his real motivation??

on UMhoops of Beilein talking to reporters outside the lockerroom after the FSU win in which he discloses a certain nugget about his motivation for coaching and playing down the ultimate goal of reaching the Final Four as a means to a coaching end.

I believe him when he says that he got into college basketball coaching to become a teacher, not win championships. It's a subtle comment he makes at the end of this interview. If others were asked how they feel as this new opportunity for a chance to climb and reach the pinnacle career goal of their sport, I would suspect that most would respond as Beilein does.

But most would not say they got into coaching soley to help others through teaching, which Beilein makes clear at the end of this spontaneous question and answer session. The point is made interestingly in the final question as  he lingers to respond to a question after a spokesman has indicated interview time is up.

If you look at John Beilein's contract and the rewards for winning at each tournament level, you will see the number doesn't go up, it remains constant at $25K, which, to me, only supports the idea that winning while certainly important, isn't the end-all desire for this coach because he never looked to get more for achieving more, even as the expectations and stakes for success rise.

When I look at Jim Harbaugh, I consider him a winner, and certainly cut from a different cloth than Coach Beilein, but no less committed to the same teaching and leadership goals that we know are the foundation of every program at this university. Coach Harbaugh has done everything to improve the future of his program except win at a level we all expect he is driving toward.

Winning big is a major process. Bigger still when you are expected to do it and don't achieve it right away. Coach Beiein has his own style and so does Coach Harbaugh. I feel pretty blessed that we have both right now leading our basketball and football programs.  They are Michigan men first and foremost, committed to doing it the righ way, doing more while saying less about the arduous procees of teaching and learning how to win.

I am not clicking on it.

I was very upset by last years performance but we knew it would be a tough year. I am happy with the direction of the program. Yes I want more victories against the rivals....they are coming.

Apples and oranges comparison.
