APB: Looking for Greg Mattison

Submitted by Robbie Moore on January 21st, 2020 at 7:44 PM

So, I'm reading everywhere that Kerry Coombs has been brought back to Columbus as Defensive Coordinator. Not co-coordinator. Nowhere in these articles is the name Greg Mattison mentioned. Looks like he is now just a regular position coach. So Greg, you left Michigan 23 years ago to go to Notre Dame for the dough. You left Michigan one year ago to go to Ohio State supposedly to be a DC one final time. Evidently Ryan Day recruited over you. But it was really just about the money, right?

Note: I have no issue with someone taking opportunities to make more. I just can't stomach Mattison's blowing out of Ann Arbor and going to our historic enemies.

Not sure on why he is passed over other than he might be TOO good at his job, as for his son's tweet, you might want to dig into that a little further before referencing his son.  his son is off the deep end and pretty sure their relationship is not a normal one so I wouldn't call him the best source

Both Mattison and Johnson are probably on their final coaching stops and both - especially Johnson - are happy.  I believe Mattison is pushing 71 and Johnson will be 68.  Johnson has said over and over that he's happy at what he's doing and coaching at OSU. He's making close to $1 million and his DL coaching legend just keeps growing. He probably retires in another 2 to 3 years but who knows ?  As for Mattison,  he was basically hired to stabilize a new coaching staff at OSU in 2019. Hafley was the main DC for OSU last year and called most of the shots.

Why is Larry Johnson continually passed over for the DC position, the guy recruits and develops at the highest level but Ohio State continues to look elsewhere to fill the DC vacancy.

You're assuming he wants a bigger position, which might not be the case.  Some guys go by the philosophy, "if it ain't broken, don't fix it."  Personally, if I were in the CFB coaching world, I'd be MUCH more likely to try & carve out a Larry Johnson-type position/career rather than trying to become some hot-shot coordinator or head coach, even if I were just in my early/mid career.   Think about it:

  • He's getting paid ~$750,000 in an area with a relatively moderate cost of living.

  • He's working at a program that is operating at a very high level performance-wise for a long time, which means a few things:

    • Recruiting is still a grind & he has to against some major programs, but recruiting to OSU is probably relatively easy compared to any other program where he would hypothetically land as a coordinator or HC position.

    • There is probably a relatively high amount of job stability compared to other CFB coaching positions. Staff turnover won't likely happen due to sudden regime change, but instead just guys leaving for promotions or retiring.  Presuming he works reasonably hard & isn't a total screw-up or asshole, he can probably stay for the foreseeable future.  If I've got any kind of young family, this helps with not having to totally uproot my kids every few years.

  • As a position coach he has fewer overall responsibilities, which means at least marginally lower stress & a marginally better "work life balance" compared to a hypothetical coordinator or head coaching position.

  • As a position coach at a major program, he's probably VERY technically proficient at coaching up defensive line athletes, and by now might be a household name among young kids who play defensive line across the country.  If for some reason he burns out on CFB & doesn't want to coach in the NFL either, another option for a guy like him with great "work/life balance" would be to set up a company running a private DL skills camp for kids, or a concierge coaching service for top D1 & NFL players in their off seasons so they can hone their skills, prepare for the draft, etc.

Well, that's a great thought but, unfortunately,  he won't disappear as we still have to face his defense in late November until he retires.  I found this article about OSU assistants' salaries and it states that Day really wanted Mattison and OSU actually DOUBLED Mattison's salary over what he was making at UM. If that's the case. no one can blame anyone for thinking about leaving for another job.

Journalism is long dead in favor of sensationalism, hence the lack of "Co-" in the title being reported for Coombs in many articles.  But, the first few articles I saw about it said Mattison would still be Co-DC and share playcalling duties with Coombs.

Coombs will team with current Day staff member Greg Mattison as co-defensive coordinators for the Buckeyes.

Fuck Greg Mattison.  Taking another job for a better fit or growth opportunity is a good thing.

Turning your back on your players and colleagues and taking inside knowledge directly to your most heated rival is callous shameful bullshit.

He would have retired a revered man to the Michigan family.  Now he is less than dirt and OSU will forget him.

Not glass at all.  Night and day.

Warriner  was fired and coached somewhere else.  He wasn’t a part of the OSU locker room he decided to coach against.  He didn’t ask kids to come play with his team and then leave.  (Or maybe he did with Harrison.

He didn’t take current inside information directly to a hated rival.  If you can’t see it I can’t help you.

I just spent 15 seconds searching:

Bucknuts has also been informed this news does not change the title or responsibilities of OSU defensive coordinator Greg Mattison. Coombs and Mattison will call the defense together, just like Hafley and Mattison did.

Ohio St's defense went from #72 last year to #2 this year. Why would they let Greg Mattison go??

I ask this rhetorically, because I know where this will head..... but do ya'll think maybe the hate for Mattison on the site is over the top?  The dude took a demotion and paycut to stay on staff when Harbaugh was hired, busted his ass as a recruiter and position coach, consistently coached the strongest position group on the team, never caused any issues that went public even though he had the chops (his resume speaks for itself) to rightfully disagree with some of Brown's X's and O's that many on this here site also happen to very vocally disagree with.

He took a raise and promotion to join one of the top 4 programs in college football and an opportunity to coach a championship team before he retires.  Hate to say it, but UM falls short of elite right now and his time is limited.  He was not getting promoted at UM and likely didn't agree with some of Brown's philosophies or expect that UM would contend for a natty over the next couple years.  Was he wrong about that? Is everyone here now a huge believer in Brown's schemes?

Blast me if you have to (points aren't working anyways) but you're lying to yourself if you say you wouldn't have at least considered the opportunity if you were him.

The D Line was not the same this year with him gone. The D Line is what most complaints were about this year. It's still complained about all the time. I think a lot of commenters here don't realize they are complaining about the drop off from Greg Mattison leaving.

ThisGuyFawkes

January 21st, 2020 at 8:47 PM ^

That's not true. The D Line was not the same because of poor recruiting - not because Mattison is an irreplaceable guru. At the end of the day, regardless of who your coach was your DT choices were going to be:

1) a 285 pound former LB

2) a 280 pound DT that couldn't stay healthy his whole career

3) two promising but raw true freshmen

4) Upperclassmen backups who have never seen meaningful snaps at UM

The drop off is not from G-Matt leaving, but from him (and others) not performing a critical part of their job well over the past 2-3 years.

Anyone know the story with Brady Pallante? Were they hoping he would grow another six inches and develop a big frame?  Because that one just seemed odd, to burn a scholarship on a guy who was so small for the position , that on the surface never had a real chance to start.

I would have considered it and maybe even have taken it but fully aware of the fact that it is what you call burning your bridges. If Im a Democrat and switch to Republican it may make sense for me, but that doesnt mean I can expect Democrats to still be cool with me.

And Im not comparing the rivalry between Michigan and OSU to the divide between Democrats and Republicans obviously. The rivalry is much more serious.

I was appalled when he bailed on us for OSU, but I was also appalled when he bailed for ND back in ‘96.

Still, the spittle-flecked bile displayed around here is more than a little unhinged, and is really a byproduct of us losing.

I think OSU is whole different level than ND.

ND is Michigan's rival, yes.

Do I hate ND?  No.  Do ND fans piss, shit, fight, damage property like ohio fans do?  No.

ND is a good school.

If my kids wanted to go to ND, I'd be all for it.  Great academics, alumni network, respectable institution.

Did I give two shits that Mattison left for ND, no.

But fuck that man boob mother fucker for going to ohio... and saying as much doesn't make me unhinged.

Seriously

Do I hate ND?  No.  Do ND fans piss, shit, fight, damage property...

They throw snowballs at their own team:

"Notre Dame football players were pelted by snowballs from fans sitting in the student section during their loss to Syracuse on Saturday. When the Irish defense held a meeting on the sideline, injured linebacker Brian Smith stood on a bench to try to shield his teammates. But when a snowball hit Kuntz, he stood and faced the crowd and appeared to challenge whoever threw it to come down on the field."
