2020 OL going into spring ball

Submitted by GoBlue C4 on February 6th, 2020 at 5:15 PM

Warinner was on Jansen's podcast and hinted at a OL of-

LT- Hayes / Keegan

LG- Barnhart / Rumler

C- Carpenter / Vastardis

RG- Filiaga / Stueber

RT- Mayfield / Stueber

He mainly just said that his rs Fr class is a great class and that Barnhart is on the top followed by Carpenter, Keegan, and Rumler ( in that order.) He also said veterans Filiaga is in line to earn a starting spot at G and Vastardis will compete at center.

The biggest question to me is C, but Carpenter won scout team player of the year which is encouraging, Rumler could compete there and there is a upperclassmen in Vastardis so it's not all bad. OT looks really strong and OG has a worst case scenario of 2 Sr's ( Filiaga and Stueber,) which seems like a really good floor.

I like this OL heading into spring ball especially with Warinner as the coach I'd give this line a B / B+. 4 of the 5 starters were top 175 recruits and there would be 3 more in the 2 deep

Yeah, this appellation doesn’t mean anything. Could mean he’s the guy with the best attitude, or that works the hardest, or helps organize the other scout players to run opposing schemes correctly. It tells us nothing about how well he’ll play on Saturday. I agree it’s a big question.

Despite the losses to graduation and early departure, I have high hopes for this OL.  They could be a major force for the next three years.

This is the first time in a while that we have had a good o-line coach who has been around for a few years AND a couple of very talented o-line classes with guys redshirting AND it looks like we wont be spending the year trying to run into stacked boxes and throw on long developing pass plays. There are a lot of questions marks with turnover but I’m not concerned with O-Line for next year. Whoever wins the jobs here will be quality.

Assuming year to year improvements I'm really only concerned about C.  It would have been great to have Ruiz back.  There will probably be some growing pains, but at least there should be a good group to grow together for 2-3 years.

Should be a decent line. Not sure they'll be up to snuff by game one but by the end of the season I think they should be rolling.

I think @ Washington will be a toss up. I lean to a loss. I think we'll be able to see in the first few games just how good this past season's O line was.

M will be a better team next year than this year....I’m of the opinion that all the preseason hype from last year was due to the projection of Shea becoming world class in a Gattis system tailored to his skill set,  that didn’t happen and talent wise the team was in a bridge year.  They don’t have to replace Devin Bush, Winovich, Gary or the other slew of NFL caliber talent this upcoming season.  Sure there are a few mid rounders but at positions where younger guys are poised to take huge leaps.  DT though.... well glad Kemp came back let’s hope he cracks 295.

People have been sleeping on Barnhart in a lot of the two deeps but he was the 1st Frosh to play among a super talented class and he played early.

It will be interesting to see how Stueber comes back and if he can beat out Hayes or make a run at one of the guard spots

The future is bright for this OL in the coming seasons.

I have long believed that the OL is the most sure way to control and win games-until, at least, the last four  seasons where the Michigan QBs proved me to be an idiot. Regardless, it is a very critical position group...and I like this upcoming room a lot.

2 things stand out:

1.Stueber looked pretty good when he played and was rumored to haBe beaten Jalen out before the injury, so Barnhart must be the real deal.

2.I was of the belief Rumler was a C and Carpenter was a G/T. Do coaches not like Rumler at center or is Carpenter just an ahead of schedule beast?  He did crush practice squad so that translates to a hard worker which generally makes good lineman.

This depth chart was under the assumption that Stueber probably isn’t going to practice full go in the spring. Expect him to be one of the guards in fall camp.

LT: RS SO Hayes

LG: RS FR Barnhart/RS JR Filiaga

C: RS FR Carpenter/RS SR Vastardis

RG: RS JR Stueber

RT: RS SO Mayfield

Can Stueber really be 100% by fall camp ?  Big guys take longer to rehab an ACL surgery.  When he can squat at his previous max weight and then push the sled for a few weeks, he will be ready to get back in game shape.  But is game shape August or October ?

Coach Ed was direct.  He said Carpenter and Vastardis are competing at Center.  Rumler is competing only at Guard.

But this is the status going into spring ball.  Things can change if injuries occur or performance dips.

I'm glad to be seeing Filiaga projected as a starter.  I've had high hopes for him, but it was starting to look like he got lost in the mix.  It'll have it's growing pains, but the overall health of the O-line moving forward looks very promising.

The O-Line is finally to the point where young players  have time to develop, with only a few starter behind more veteran players. Finally we don't have to wait for the next bad class to come up or have an all Freshman line.  Now we need to build depth in the DT ranks, where we don't have to use lighter DE to try to stop teams running up the middle on us.

8-5 here we come!  Seriously this may be the least experienced set of lines we have had under Harbaugh. That doesn’t end well in college football

Sorry, but Coach Ed did not give a 2-deep.  He said:

  • Carpenter and Vastardis are competing at Center
  • LT is Hayes
  • RT is Mayfield
  • Stueber is rehabbing and won’t compete in spring ball but will be ready by fall camp. Has guard and tackle versatility
  • Barnhart is in the mix with guard and tackle versatility
  • Big Chuck is competing at guard, along with Keagan, Rumler and Honigford
