11worriers has gone full salty mode re: Losing Ohio Recruits

Submitted by poseidon7902 on April 5th, 2023 at 7:59 AM

Opening sentence says it all, but you can read for more mental gymnastics of why losing recent recruits really doesn't mean anything.

There's a difference between getting beat out by Michigan for an in-state prospect and the Wolverines just getting a commitment in Ohio State's home state.

It's not quite as salty as RCMB gets with the "We cooled on them and they suck" approach, but you can find a TON of that in the recruiting threads surrounding the recent Ohio recruits who have not chosen OSU.

https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-football/2023/04/138150/in-state-prospects-committing-to-michigan-doesnt-mean-ohio-state-has-a-recruiting-problem?mibextid=tejx2t&fbclid=IwAR3ftvRg2tR7nQik5-MxInUoaU2TvAnW6qa_TNMoQ2CIQLpJPfR3ZdaZMVc

Do a quick search on this thread for Jadyn to see the real salt including people prior to the announcement boasting how UM fans would be pathetic and using the excuse that we didn't want him when he commits to OSU.

In general, opposing fans like their school, think their school is the best, think that other schools are not the best, and try to justify things in a positive or at least less negative light for their own beliefs. Got it.

I clicked, and I commented, but these posts 'Look what opposing fans think and look how dumb they are!' drive me nuts. There is certainly a hierarchy of obnoxious fan bases, but all are guilty.

Rod Moore: not "good enough for an OSU offer"; buckeye killer

Hassan Haskins: not "good enough for an OSU offer"; buckeye killer

Donovan Edwards: not "good enough to be an OSU take"; buckeye killer

Michigan's entire O-Line the past two years: a few offers, but no "takes" for OSU; buckeye killers

Need I go on?

100%! They want their cake and they want to eat it too, even when those players make impact plays against them. Of course JJ is another one, which made last November so much sweeter.

Not to mention how many 5-stars/high 4-stars they underdeveloped. Browning, Friday, Fleming and Vincent are recent examples.

100%.  I think the Buckeyes have got a bit soft on the recruiting front, assuming that their fair share of five stars and high four stars will just present themselves at the Shoe ready to go.  This is another happy stresser for Day & Co.  They objectively had better/more talent the last two years; gonna be a tough row for them to hoe if we close the talent gap.

Yeah, I don't buy the more talent take.  They had guys that were recruited with higher ceilings out of HS than UM - True.  Ie, there was the potential there, but not the on field talent and production.

OSU, based on recruiting ranking over the past 5 years, should be performing at UGA and Bama levels consistently, and they simply aren't outside of the passing game - which has been elite under Day and Hartline (QB and WR play are extraordinary).  Outside that, they are a soft group of 4 and 5 stars that want none of Harbaugh trench warfare.  Their secondary has been atrocious as well.

And now that it looks like Harbaugh is bringing in 4 and 5 star guys of his own, that fit UM's specific Mr. Plow culture....their angst is justified.

Right, but the first article (which didn't seem unreasonable) didn't mention Haskins, Edwards, or any of last year's O-line starters.

If you look at the 2015-2021 list of Ohioans there aren't that many impact players. Moore for sure, and Erick All. Who else?

I do like that Michigan is recruiting guys (like Hamilton and Roebuck) who are on the map but not quite at historical OSU level. I think they'll be good for the culture in small doses. I also like last year's high-upside dice rolls like Waller and Ishmail.

I don't believe that to be the case. OSU was courting a few RB's and both Pryor and Henderson committed within a week or so of each other. OSU fans were very vocal online about how both were a take over Edwards. I can't speak to the coach's opinions, so you could be right about that.

Regardless, OSU definitely took those two and OSU fans on Twitter were loud about how Edwards "wasn't a take".

I see they're going to cling to Harbaugh's first five seasons at Michigan for a loooong time.

We pounded them in 2021, turned over both of our coordinators and the majority of our talent/starters in 2022, and with lots of mid level 3ish star types on defense we held them to just two touchdowns and three 2nd half points in 2022. And all they can really talk about is how Harbaugh "dodged them" in the COVID year. Lol.

Imagine being Ryan Day.  You've made the CFP in 3 outta 4 seasons as the head coach.  But you're 1-2 against Michigan and if you lose again, the fans will literally run you out of town.

And you have to go to Ann Arbor with a new QB, 2 new tackles, a new OC, and Jim Knowles to face pretty much the same exact team that pushed your shit in in your own stadium a year ago.

I wonder how he sleeps at night lol

it would be hard enought forcing myself to imagine being Eddie Munster look alike once, let alone twice!

I've been saying, since Urban Liar was forced into retirement, Day would be Cooper 2.0.   I don't think they fire him if/when he loses his third in a row, but I think he will be openly put on notice that if they fall for a forth straight season, he's done.

Gotta love it when the 'hot seat' is under someone else's head coach.

Lol. This entire article screams "insecurity ". Wait wait! Look at us! We're still important! 🤣

Nevermind the fact that if i were a osu fan (vomit) i would question why ohio state isn't recruiting these kids? Clearly the uofm staff has had better success developing talent.

It’s odd bc they are saying UM is pulling guys they don’t offer so “whatever.”  Yet they have a whole article and tons of comments about it. But maybe they also have an article every time Northwestern takes a guy from Ohio they didn’t offer.

Two areas James Joseph is kicking Buckeye ass

1. ID'ing less then blue chip talent and developing them for blue chip production

2. Understanding the way to win this war is in the trenches. You can have all the pass happy spready athletes prancing around the field you want. We are going to line up and shove it down your throats because there is a small margin between your athletes and ours and the gap between our physicality and yours is way wider.

Keep doing exactly what you are doing. If Ryan Day doesn't adjust to some form of power rushing attack with his speed in space athletes he won't be there long term!

Very glad to see UofM focusing, once again, on recruiting Ohio.  I remember 2-3 years ago when a large number of people on this blog dismissed that approach, preferring to concentrate on other geographic areas.  Michigan succesfully recruited players from Ohio when Bump Elliott, Bo Schembechler, and  Gary Moeller coached.  Somwhere along the way, attention got shifted to a "National Focus" and I think that was a mistake.  Nothing wrong with going after selected recruits outside of Ohio and the Midwest, but UofM always has a geographic with those closer to home, IMO.

I thoroughly am enjoying watching OSU go through its own existential crisis right now.

Whether by glorious, soul-crushing nailbiters or outright beatdowns, beating Michigan is all they've known for twenty years. Sure, they lost last year, but that was easily chalked up to "They were at home, our guys had the flu, a bunch of overachieving seniors made high leverage plays on a young OSU team, blind squirrels find nuts once in a while, it was snowing" and on and on and on. In other words, it could be easily chalked up to a fluke, and that there would be a "return to normalcy" in 2022.

Now, after this past season, it's dawned on them that it ain't no fluke. Tressel and Meyer are not around to provide that massive mental and psychological edge that they were able to instill within their respective OSU programs. Whatever edge they had in those departments, its gone now. Their reality, the only one that many of them have ever known, could be crashing down.

OSU has to be feeling all the pressure going into 2023, particularly Ryan Day and his entire staff. They have to go on the road to what may very well be the most talented Michigan team ever assembled, at least on offense. A Michigan offense that has roughed them up and ground them to dust two years in a row. If OSU loses three in a row, every single member of Day's staff, including
Day himself, is on the chopping block. I'm not sure Day survives an offseason of being 1-3 against Michigan.

I am not definitively saying that's going to happen. OSU is still an extremely dangerous team, with boatloads of talent and is more than capable of winning in Ann Arbor. But if they don't.....I'd say there's a >50% that Day is cleaning out his office by season's end. Particularly if he endures another beatdown and misses the playoff.

All through the dark years, I clung to the belief that the worm turns, and that one day it would be time for the Cooper 2 Era in the Game.  Two years does not make for Cooper 2, but a third would definitely put me on Cooper 2 watch.

There's been a "rumor" in the recruiting community about the approach that OSU has taken in recruiting.

The key aspect of this is - OSU looks to get the "highest possible talent" they can - and, they recruit the entire country to pursue / sign those prospects.   Their record of highly ranked recruiting classes (and rosters) goes back at least a decade.

Ohio has a good high school football system and generates a lot of talented players.  Some of those are Power 5 players - others are Group of 5 - but, the point is there's a lot to recruit and its a talent rich state.

So, what have I been hearing?    OSU assumes any prospect in the state will accept an offer from the Buckeyes, regardless of when that offer is extended.   So, they focus on "out of state" talent first - and, might throw "a bone" of interest to certain in-state prospects.  Most of the Buckeye's "eggs" are in the out of state basket.

Now, the results on the field have shown interesting things in the past two seasons.  First, Michigan is competitive - and, that's manifest in The Game's results.   Second, development - there's little doubt that Michigan is more effective at developing talent recently than the team in Columbus.

The situation is - talented prospects - who may not be the highest ranked in their position group - across the country - that live / attend high school in Ohio, realized they have a very solid option with Michigan.   And, the fact that Michigan's relatively close to home - developing talent - winning games - winning head to head against the Buckeyes - sending players to the NFL - has a supportive culture - etc.  Oh, and Michigan shows interest in them.

It's easy to see WHY some of these highly regarded Ohio prospects are responding to Michigan and - demonstrating that by accepting scholarship offers.

I'm not naive enough to believe Michigan's success on the field will pull a lot of Ohio's talent onto Michigan's roster.   Candidly, that doesn't seem necessary.  The point is - there will be SOME talent that will head up to Ann Arbor.   Inroads have been made - and, my hope is - they will continue to grow.

Yeah I think this is a good way to characterize it. At their peak (and Michigan’s nadir) OSU could assume any Ohio recruit who wasn’t like high end 5 star national interest would be a slam dunk recruit for them with little effort. They could afford to take swings on high end out of state talent knowing they could guarantee a high floor for the class by swooping in and grabbing Ohio guys at the last minute as solid second options.

But if nothing else, now Michigan is making OSU actually put in the work to defend their backyard. If their “high floor” guys would rather be Michigan’s priority than OSU’s slow-played backup option, OSU can no longer count on local 4 stars being freebies.

There's a pattern that has emerged.  Michigan has a well-executed plan, starting with identifying the talent that fits the plan and then developing.  Football is a game of power and possession, i.e. a dominant run game will take you further than a dominant passing game (although, both are better).  OSU recruits talent, primarily speed, and figures that's enough.  Results? The last two years, we've trampled them underfoot.  Sucks to be you, OSU
