Indiana 63, Michigan 52 Comment Count

Stone-cold killer (via)

Yogi Ferrell (27 points, 7/8 3-pt) hit damn near everything, Indiana utilized Duke's blueprint to shut down Nik Stauskas (6 points, 1/6 FG), and the Hoosiers eventually pulled away in a brutal slog at Assembly Hall. We planned to record a podcast this afternoon; for everyone's sake, that is not happening, nor is any sort of instant recap. Enjoy your Super Bowl Sunday.

U cannot and will not ever be able to get a call in that gym as a visitor. Every time they drove they shot free throws. Every time Michigan drove, play on it's Big Ten basketball. That's life on the road in the Big Ten. Plus hey maybe stop Yogi Ferrell their only player one time !!

Just saying we get those same calls at home and if we can take the homer glasses off then we would all realize that Morgan has gotten away with a crap load of contact this season compared to other B1G bigs. We just shot like crap and Stauskas decided he wasn't going to work hard to get open.

This was the type of game that GR3 needs to take over and show how good of a player he is and he was quiet yet again.

I only watched the second half, but from what I saw we got great calls, especially with Will Sheehey fouling out. Excuses don't win games, especially on the road. We got way worse calls at State and still showed them what's up. Ref may swing a point or two, but not as many as we lost by - that's called missed F/Ts!

How in the world is Ferrell getting 8 three point attempts off when he's on fire?  Once he gives the ball up, whoever his defender is should have been instructed to fully deny and forget about playing help defense.  See if any of ther other 4 players on the court for IU can do anything.

That is the easiest dumb thing to say after any loss and particularly dumb for this one, when both coaches used the same gameplan. It was a slog of a game but ultimately our normally superior shooters didn't shoot as well as their normally terrible shooters. Sorry you have the be the recipient of my anger at all the dufuses who use this sentiment in place of analysis for so many sports.

this is STILL Michigan.

C'mon, guys, the letdown had to come... we were exhausted after the 3-game gauntlet, still managed to eke out a win against Purdue, but there was a palpable downward-curve in energy all along, not entirely surprising.

The question now is: does Sunday to Wednesday give this team enough time to crawl under the covers, totally crash, then shake it off and bounce back into standard A-game shape?

Which is what this team, at its core, is: Golden. Just give 'em a chance.

This team is pure Michigan -- capable of beating the very best and losing to the very worst.

Anyone who doesn't get that -- and I don't care how many K's & P's are in your name -- doesn't get Michigan.

Give 'em some love, and trust they'll be back.

used to be, people only jumped off the ledge when we lost a football game, but here's a group doing the same after a basketball loss.  on the road.  to indiana.  i guess the program has come a long way, huh?

anyone that thought this wouldn't happen at some point this year was delusional.  we lost by 21 at state last year and almost won the national championship.  take a deep breath and relax, people.

-Levert & GRob took 1/2 the shots, that should never happen.....Yogi was very hot and we still left him open to often (Levert)......Levert's poor mans Burke immitation is getting old,a fine player to be sure but he's missing open players to often & disrupts offensive flow (down 6 he hoisted up a defended 3 with Zak wide open).....GRob underperforms on a regulat basis, his jumper on a 3 on 1 was especially egregious, does he have a low bball IQ? Lack intensity? I really don't know ( solving that is priority #1)....offenses rhythm was similar to mine on the dance floor

Ferrell was out cold from 3 just like Spike was in the championship game or Nik was against Florida - that's hard to 'coach' against because those guys can hit threes even when they're contested. However, Michigan did eventually prevent Yogi from really taking 3's.

His performance was the difference. Everyone else on Indiana was ho-hum. If Ferrell doesn't drain f'ing 7 of 8 threes then we talk about how this is a "gritty" win on the road even when the shots aren't falling and talk about our perseverence, etc.

Game had nothing to do with Yogi Ferrell's shooting and everything to do with Michigan's offense not showing up.

If you knew before hand that Indiana was going to score 63 points you would have been 99% sure of a Michigan win.

Only question I have is how can one player be allowed to completely neutralize Stauskas at one end and not have to spend any energy doing it? This screams coaching adjustment.

Eh, I don't know . . . the score of our game at Minnesota was 63-60, and the MSU game was in the 60s until they started fouling on purpose the last two minutes.  Our offense (like most teams' ) often doesn't play as well on the road.  I did not expect to score a ton today, although we definitely shot worse than I anticipated.

IU scored 38 in the second half even though they were milking clock on a ton of possessions. That's not good defense, especially against a very average offense like that.

If we hit anywhere near the way we were shooting in the games we won, we win this one.  That and Ferrel just misses a couple of those desperation 3's right before the 35 second clock ran out.  We could have overcome that with better shooting - from the field and free throw line.  We knew we were going to lose 1 or 2 on the road.  Hopefully we can use this game to get better.  For one thing, find more ways to get Stauskas open no matter what D the other team is throwing at us.  Another thing, is get Robinson to use his God-given talent more by driving the ball to the hoop.  If he has even a little daylight, he's going to put the ball in.  It sure isn't working for him from the outside.

but to sit 8-1 in the big ten after some of the games we have been in?  I take that 100/100 times.  Still have to hold serve at home though, and NEED to win in Columbus or Iowa

Eh, that's some pretty lazy analysis, Ace. Stauskas had a sprained ankle at Duke. Indiana didn't "use their blueprint." Nik just didn't want the ball - he barely even made Yogi work to deny him in the 2nd half.

By the way, Gary Harris tried to do the exact same thing (but better) and MSU got torched. This isn't some magic blueprint to shutting him down. Today, he shut himself down. He was seriously hands-on-hips watching the game from the corner on a dozen possessions.

We looked flat and Yogi didn't.  You felt a let down game coming as we've seemed to just be going through the motions of playing basketball.  Still enamored with this team but they showed little to no desire at the end of this one.  Damn I hate Tom Crean. I didn't watch the closing seconds, did he use his interview at the end of a win to attack someone personally? Hope this one serves as a motivator it's hard to stay laser focused over these kind of stretches. This makes the games leading up to Staee even more intriguing.
