Hello: O'Maury Samuels Comment Count

Ace

I think he lifts.

Michigan has added one of the most athletic prospects in the country. As first reported by Sam Webb, four-star Los Lunas (NM) running back O'Maury Samuels committed this evening, giving the Wolverines a third back in the class. Samuels visited for the Spring Game and couldn't find a reason not to make his pledge:

“Man, it was fantastic,” Samuels told The Michigan Insider. “I loved the atmosphere. I loved the people around there. I loved the area. Their facilities were just great. I got to communicate with some of the players. They were nice. They told me how (things are) run things there at Michigan. I really like it out there.  I got to talk to Coach Harbaugh and Coach Wheatley. We talked about how I could be their All-Purpose back for the 2017 class. They said they need one. “
“So I was like, hey, they need me. Why not?”

Sameuls burst onto the recruiting scene at The Opening Dallas regional in March, winning position MVP and earning an invite to the finals. In the combine portion, he posted the best SPARQ rating of the camp season thus far:

He isn't just track-fast. His speed is quite apparent on his junior film, and that's not all he brings to the table:

Samuels is the 11th commit in Michigan's 2017 class. This post—and, yes, Leonard Taylor's and Phil Paea's too—will be updated with scouting and more tomorrow.

have either forgotten or  are not aware that both Mike Hart and Jamie Mooris played at Michigan were considered fairly decent.

For those of you believe he lacks sufficient height. Stand beside Jamie Morris for just one second. That blanket statement is made because it's my  belief that we would be hard pressed to find a member of this site shorter than him. Honest estimate is between 5'4" - 5'5". And Hart, in the opinion of many, was both too short and lacked the speed to be effective in this league  He is short, 5'7" type short and he was never a burner. Yet he somehow managed to come to Michigan with these handicaps and walk away as the school's all-time leader.

Bo, in regard to  recruiting, "First, must dominate the oposition, regardless of level.  After that we do the full evaluation."  The only worry I have in regard to this young man is, if he decides to  take further visits - more-than-likely he will - after the offers, and tthere will be many, start coming in, is that he could change his mind.  And that concern is not a large one. Right now, and Jim is taking full advantage, it's very likely  that he might even suprass  both Saban and Meyer as to which coach the majority of high schoolers would like to  play for.

As normal as it is to  have my blood pressure checked with  each visit to my Doctor's office, it is just as common to be weighed and measured. There is, of course no  variation. I am not certain if I still have the photo, but me at at 5'9" and the substantial difference, and when I showed it to a number of friends, without  exception, their reaction was almost always identical to yours.'

It was taken the night prior to the 2003 Rose Bowl. The Alumni Base had rented a section of Universal Studios to  host a New Year Eve's party.  In his role in the A,D,, which  I believe began as Assisstant to Bo, and expanded later, he was pretty much forced into saying, "Of couse not," when I asked him if he would mind if  my friend took a photo of us next to each other. I had a feeling though, judging by his smile and in just the way he handled himself, this is him, regardless of whether job requirements forced his attendance or if done willingly. Just an extremely nice man. I had always assumed there were certain liberties taken. It's common kinowledge. Hell, even at the high school level, I think they added twenty pounds to my son.

Knowing before hand he would probably be shorter than the 5'7" most imagine him to be, I was not surprised to learn he was that much shorter. If I am able to find that photo, I think you will be far more surprised at something else. I am not even going to hazard a guess, but I will politely point out that Jamie has added significant weight since his playing days.

And back to this young man. I loved Dillon's tape, especially  the way  he hit the hole when it appeared. And the  tape on this young man was even more impressive,. Where they might have a chance of tracking down Dillon, not so much with  Samuels. Although we're never going to return to a tandem system where both backs are an equally viable option on any given play, these two are as an impressive duo as I recall coming in at the same time.

Samuels, his body already close to  Wheatley's as a Senior does remind me of the  type Bo use to  search for. He loved track guys, i.e., extremely fast but with football experience. He knew he was always going to have a line that  would provide an opening and if the back had the  vision to  find it, goodbye.........Somewhat embarrassed that the second name doeesn't immediately come to mind. Woolfolk is just too perfect of an example, along with career here to forget. But in that same class was a young man  from Detroit. I want to say Jefferson, but am not certain.

As to the events of the  weekend and the immediate dividends, about  as productive of a weekend as one could hope for.  Great job Jim and staff.

OMaury is built, but Wheatley was 6-1/215 as a freshman, according to the UM roster database. Unless Samuels is also a seven-time state champion in the long jump, 100m, 200m and 110 hurdles, Wheatley was also faster.

Doesn't matter—Samuels looks like a hugely gifted TB who should do well here.

Just to clarify I think you mean tangible traits.  Speed, agility, height/weight, strength are all tangible qualities.  They are physical in nature and can be tested accurately...hence the contest he won with actual numbers associated to them.  Intangible traits are not physical in nature and are more difficult to assess on tests like leadership, toughness, decision making, etc.

He has all the tangible traits you're looking for.  I'm not sure we know anything yet about his intangible traits.

I don't think you will have to worry much JDon. The staff now knows what they have to work with, the level of interest they can expect to get, and a pretty clear idea of how many spots will be open come next Feb. The FB and Samuels were hand picked for those spots, and Paea has the versatility to go on O or D (plus I am pretty sure the staff knows that "processing" an in-state kid would have a lasting negative impact.)

Doesn't mean all the kids will end up at M, but I doubt any/many will be pushed out.

Agreed. He's got another gear that he just kicks into and it looks like he's been shot out of a cannon. That said, I wonder how he'll handle contact at the next level because no one came close to tackling him in his video. He was too fast for them to reach.
