Cam McGrone, Quinn Nordin Enter Draft
McGrone joins Jalen Mayfield as an NFL draft hopeful with almost nothing aside from a redshirt freshman season to go on:

McGrone was impressive but erratic in 2019 and didn't get much of an opportunity to show what he could do this year because of COVID, the defensive tackles, and an injury. Pegging his position is near-impossible. I'd imagine someone takes a swing at him in the mid- to late-rounds since he's demonstrated some impressive ability.
UPDATE: Quinn Nordin also declared.
There is no content after the jump.

Alas.
Fiddlesticks. Wish him the very best and hope he gets a massive contract.
December 29th, 2020 at 4:11 PM ^
What kind of grade could he have received from the NFL to make a decision like this? Good luck Cam, but another year would have been more beneficial to him than any player in recent memory that has declared early. IMO.
December 29th, 2020 at 7:15 PM ^
See this happen way too often. Kid is getting bad advice as he will be at best a late round pick. Play another year of college ball and show improvement and work your way into rounds 2-3. Good luck though Cam
December 29th, 2020 at 8:15 PM ^
Why would you stay one more minute in this shit storm of a program. Did any of you watch the absolute lack of anything that resembled a football team this season?
December 29th, 2020 at 9:49 PM ^
Trolling is a art, bud. Don't quit your day job.
December 30th, 2020 at 1:46 AM ^
This is easily the stupidest thing I've read on this blog in a long time.
There is a tree out there working overtime to replenish the oxygen you waste by existing, you should have to carry a plant with you to ease its burden.
December 30th, 2020 at 9:03 AM ^
Mr. Impaler - Normally, the best thing to do in response to an obviously provocative comment like this is just to ignore it since it adds nothing other than to reveal the poster’s inadequacies. However, since you are commenting on a post about the departure of a member of the team, and thereby detracting from that player’s experience should he read this post, I wanted to simply say that you are a very selfish and self-absorbed person, Mr. Impaler. Cam McGrone just wrote a message about what an honor it was to play on the team, to share experiences with his teammates, and to play for great Michigan fans. You should be ashamed of yourself, Mr. Impaler, but unfortunately I’m confident you are not.
December 29th, 2020 at 4:14 PM ^
Odd. He's definitely got the physical upside, but wasn't great this year. Hopefully he shows out at the combine and a team takes a flyer on him in the late rounds because beyond that, I'm not sure he'll be drafted
Definitely the most questionable draft declaration so far imo
December 29th, 2020 at 4:20 PM ^
I respectfully disagree. Ambry Thomas is the most questionable that I see(he needed positive film this year badly) and I feel like he will be this year's Lavert Hill and go undrafted.
December 29th, 2020 at 4:33 PM ^
Ambry had a much better year last year than McGrone did this year and sat out due to covid concerns likely stemming from his colitis
December 29th, 2020 at 4:40 PM ^
Him sitting out and not having more consistent film is not added value for NFL teams. I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes undrafted, but wish the best for him of course.
December 29th, 2020 at 4:46 PM ^
He has more solid film out there than McGrone. McGrone has a some decent film from his sophomore year then a lot of his film from his junior year is inconsistent, full of bad reads, and overcommits. The only reason he gets draft is due to his physical upside and teams thinking they can develop him further
December 30th, 2020 at 8:59 AM ^
While I agree with your assessment on McGrone, my expectation is that he will indeed get drafted. If you just looked at McGrone's sophomore film, you see a possible 1st/2nd rounder in the making, so he clearly has the tools. I'm sure Don Brown's terrible year will be factored into it.
My overall point is that McGrone will get drafted and Ambry is a toss up in my opinion.
December 29th, 2020 at 5:33 PM ^
McGrone was considered to be a 2nd round pick before the season started and there were talks of him making that leap into 1st round discussion. Now, I think he's 3rd/4th round pick based on this season.
December 29th, 2020 at 5:50 PM ^
That’s generous
December 29th, 2020 at 6:18 PM ^
Not based what I've been hearing
December 29th, 2020 at 7:43 PM ^
- Considered a 2nd round pick by who, Michigan4Life? Were they referring to the 2022 Draft?
December 29th, 2020 at 8:06 PM ^
Ambry is a 6" CB with long arms, exceptional quickness, and good ball skills. He will run 4.4 or better, and test pretty well, at a position of need for every team. I bet he goes in the 1st 3 rounds.
December 29th, 2020 at 4:20 PM ^
Um....wut?
December 29th, 2020 at 4:20 PM ^
Good luck to him. He will need it as an UFA.
December 29th, 2020 at 4:22 PM ^
Kalel Mullings, come on down!!
December 29th, 2020 at 4:22 PM ^
McGrone? More like McGone amirtite? (I know, I know, lame. McGroan.)
December 29th, 2020 at 6:23 PM ^
McPone
December 30th, 2020 at 1:09 AM ^
McBPONE
December 30th, 2020 at 11:27 AM ^
The news makes me wanna get McStoned.
December 29th, 2020 at 4:23 PM ^
I think some of these young guys are getting some questionable career advice...unless they just want to "get paid" immediately and don't care about how much potential earnings they forgo (and how the teamates they leave behind might feel).
I'm not in their position and don't have all the details... just seems odd, as others have mentioned.
December 29th, 2020 at 4:28 PM ^
Gotta make a team first before you get paid. I’m good with this because it’ll give a RS freshman or true freshman or walk-on an opportunity to lead the defense
December 29th, 2020 at 6:19 PM ^
My Lord, if we need a walk-on to lead the defense, we've fallen even farther than I thought.
December 29th, 2020 at 4:48 PM ^
Maybe they just are desperate to get away from Harbaugh.
December 29th, 2020 at 5:17 PM ^
I assume this is tongue in cheek but there are people who believe this shit and peddle it for clicks.
If you want to reasonably consider how a coach could have affected his decision then the loss of Brown makes sense. There is the “bush” role in browns defense. Who knows what the next DC will run.
I think playing behind tackles who can’t keep you clean would be the biggest reason and Brown deserves all the blame for that.
December 29th, 2020 at 8:18 PM ^
Hey I'm also in the 603 these days. This is not tongue and cheek. Our program is in complete disarray - lack of leadership/coaching whatever you want to call it.
December 29th, 2020 at 8:30 PM ^
You may be right as it pertains to Cam. I have no idea...But to assume "tongue in cheek...peddle it for clicks" is inaccurate. As has been stated numerous times on this board and is very well documented about Harbaugh's tenure with both Stanford and the Niners, he simply wears people out. Wherever he goes, he burns bridges with both the admin and the team, and that's a very well understood and known risk about what comes along with hiring Harbaugh.
Again, I can't comment about the specifics of Cam...but as both a Niners fanatic and Stanford grad / fan, I have a decade's worth of stories and intel to suggest he's not the easiest human being to work with, nor is he a "player's oriented coach." He's a pretty arrogant guy and is known to play favorites among players...but that's before UM, when he was winning. So maybe he is different now?
December 29th, 2020 at 7:47 PM ^
Most of those eager to get away from Harbaugh wisely choose the transfer portal instead of going undrafted and praying for an opportunity on a practice squad.
December 29th, 2020 at 5:41 PM ^
Here's another piece of evidence in the "why OSU keeps winning" trial of this century.
They have players that are sure fire first round draft picks coming back to play another year.
We have players who might be updrafted free agents in the CFL checking out as soon as they can.
December 29th, 2020 at 8:02 PM ^
Must be no incentive to stay .
December 29th, 2020 at 11:14 PM ^
It sure seems like we continue to have a growing list of potential All American and All Big Ten seasons missing from players leaving early.
McGrone, Nico, Ambry, Mayfield, Carpenter to name a few.
Maybe the OSU players have a little money in their pocket and aren’t feeling the same urgency to get a paycheck.
December 30th, 2020 at 11:35 AM ^
Late to the party, but I wanted to address this. IMO the key issue is "stability."
OSU is a stable program. They win. They transition coaches without much drama. The biggest controversy they've had to deal with is Zach Smith having a mental breakdown on Twitter. Everything else is a known quantity, a world that the players are confident in navigating because it's been consistent.
And sure, there may be some "perks" to staying at OSU, maybe even relatively significant, but do we honestly believe that those perks outweigh NFL stardom & money?
Contrast that to Michigan. I won't rehash our last...12 years.
It's a pretty normal human reaction, when your world is being fucked with, to peace out. Think about the business world: people quit or retire in droves every time there's a reorg.
When your DC, who uniquely values the position you're playing, is sacked, rightly or wrongly, it's not unthinkable to be very concerned about who will replace him and whether you'll be valuable to that person.
Don't ask me why he's entering the draft, though. Can't fathom that one.
December 30th, 2020 at 3:44 PM ^
If you do not think part of the reason these players are jumping ship is because of coaches who are still here, then you are an idiot.
December 30th, 2020 at 11:30 AM ^
This is a logical and more diplomatic way of saying our main contributors seem to want out as soon as they can. Hutchinson is a head scratching exception but he is a legacy with family money so that is a huge factor.
For Ohio State, they win and they stay. Pretty simple recipe.
December 29th, 2020 at 4:24 PM ^
Is he even projected to get drafted? Are these kids that eager to get away from Harbaugh?
December 29th, 2020 at 4:32 PM ^
Did you immediately forget the Aidan news today just to fit this into your narrative?
December 29th, 2020 at 4:41 PM ^
Yes, Hutchinson decided to come back but there have been a lot more instances of guys leaving early that are projected mid/late round draft picks rather than staying to improve their stock.
So, yes it is very possible guys cant wait to leave the program even if it is not in their best interest.
December 29th, 2020 at 5:43 PM ^
*rather to stay and possibly improve their stock, while risking injuries that could derail their career and while forgoing the ability to get paid for dedicating their life to football
And we only hear about or care about Michigan's transfers, draft enrollees, etc (naturally). But these numbers don't mean much in a vacuum without valid comparisons to other programs and what their numbers are
December 29th, 2020 at 4:49 PM ^
Maybe he doesn't trust the defensive coaches to be named later.
December 30th, 2020 at 10:13 AM ^
If you are on the fence why not sit tight and see who gets hired?
December 29th, 2020 at 4:24 PM ^
While I wish him the best of luck and hope he has a great NFL career, this, along with Ambry Thomas' decision to go pro seem...early and the changes of being an undrafted FA seem higher than not..but what do I know, I'm just a dude behind a computer
December 29th, 2020 at 4:25 PM ^
I know Cam’s family. I wish him all the luck in the world and hope he sticks. With that said, respectfully, this is a very bad decision. He looks out of place and lost half the time on defense. I’m not necessarily blaming him, but he’s a 2nd or 3rd round guy who’s now going to drop into the 4 to 7 range I fear. He could have played next season and gotten himself into a 2nd round pick. I hope the best for him. Great guy. Just not sure this is a good decision. Mayfield I understand and Paye as well. McGrone I’m just not sure.
December 29th, 2020 at 8:20 PM ^
Hey getting drafted sounds way better than another year on a miserable team where your stock is only going to drop behind untalented DTs.
December 29th, 2020 at 9:00 PM ^
I’m not going to disagree. I just think he is way better than he showed this last year. People say a lot about Peppers and Gary and that they weren’t utilized correctly or didn’t make a bunch of plays. But the fact is they did contribute in ways a lot of guys just didn’t see, que the Gary video of him getting triple teamed. I think McGrone did get utilized poorly this year because Michigan decided to start playing half zone, that they didn’t know how to run, and half dr. Blitz stuff. Problem is the linebackers weren’t great at the zone stuff and the defensive tackles weren’t good enough to let McGrone just go after people. So instead of playing he’s thinking too much. Sounds to me, based on what the family has said, he didn’t want to try and learn a completely new system and only be in it for a year. I believe McGrone was going to leave either way though. Whether or not Brown stuck around. I think the family is hoping he’ll have a great combine and people will chalk this year up to “covid crazyness”
December 29th, 2020 at 4:26 PM ^
Weird move, IMO. Maybe he gets picked up in the late rounds but not hard to envision him going undrafted. I actually thought he'd train his butt off and try to come back for a kick ass season. Don't' get me wrong wish him the best and hope he gets paid but this has Lavert Hill written all over it.
