It seems to me we should let the corches do their jerbs, since they know moar about this situation then all of us combined.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:34 AM ^
What's with the moar? And apparently the jerbs and corches?

Yeah, it's more like "jorb" when Coach Z says it. Actually, it's more like "jeeeoooorrb".

By merely asking this question the OP has set back our kicking game
Dynamite drop in
November 15th, 2010 at 11:34 AM ^
Hagerup looked good taking kickoffs against Purdue, and he's 4th or 5th in the Big 10 in Net Punting.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:37 AM ^
I don't know if it is the camera angle or his technique, but it almost always looks like a shank coming off his foot. It makes me nervous for a split second then I realize that it was a nice punt.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:40 AM ^
The Purdue game had some crazy angles. Might be the stadium structure, but I had a hard time watching that game. Getting dizzy and shit.
November 15th, 2010 at 12:31 PM ^
they reported that the weather was far worse than it appeared on TV, that not only was it pouring but terribly windy. So even more kudos for the success of the punts, no matter how ugly.
PS: Now that the soccer team won the Big Ten championship, do you think the guys will have any free time to help out with the kicking?
November 15th, 2010 at 12:53 PM ^
Season's still not quite over for them though. There's that pesky NCAA tournament that they have a spot in. That starts either Thursday or this weekend depending on if they get a bye or not.
November 15th, 2010 at 1:03 PM ^
so let's see... the bowl game?
November 15th, 2010 at 1:40 PM ^
I don't mind the soccer team losing IF it ends up helping out the football team. It'd be pretty cool to have a brand-new kicker for the OSU game. (Or, more likely, maybe they can at least offer Broekhuizen/Gibbons some tips on technique.)
November 15th, 2010 at 2:07 PM ^
Seriously? Who are you to tell Justin Meram what sport to play? I'm assuming he loves soccer much more than football, and is enjoying being an important part of the Big Ten Champion soccer team.
Plus, there's no guarantee he would be any less frustrating than Broekhuizen/Gibbons. I don't think he was the clear winner coming out of camp.
November 15th, 2010 at 2:32 PM ^
He can play whatever he wants. But speaking for myself, I care more about football success than soccer success. If the soccer team losing can help the football team beat OSU, I'll take it. And honestly, so would most fans.
November 15th, 2010 at 1:04 PM ^
and yea the weather was terrible, much worse than on tv when i watched afterwards. it was downpouring at times and it was gusting winds like 15-25 mph. as much as i'd like to blame the weather on our offensive troubles some blame still falls on the team. all in all wins a win
November 15th, 2010 at 11:57 AM ^
There were a couple times when he kicked it, and I was like "Aww hell...wait...that was actually a good kick!"
November 15th, 2010 at 12:45 PM ^
There was one in particular that looked like a low, short, fast down field roller that went quite far and had coverage guys down there by the time it arrived.
November 15th, 2010 at 12:02 PM ^
I think someone had commented on the camera placements at Purdue being quite shitty. I cannot recall if this was in a thread or the liveblog, but I'm pretty sure it was mentioned that Purdue offers rather lousy options for camera placement.
Or, I could totally be making this up.
November 15th, 2010 at 12:08 PM ^
Yeah, I noticed this too. It really threw me off all game. It seemed like the central camera placement was on like the 30 yard line, which was just weird and created an odd viewing angle all game long.

Pedestrian rope holding abilities at best.

Is it possible they could be trying to get a Redshirt for Gibbons?
November 15th, 2010 at 11:46 AM ^
He redshirted last year.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:57 AM ^
redshirted.
EDIT-Magnus beat me to it, so here's a picture of 80's WWF superstar Tito Santana

Are those the same red wrist bands Rich wears? FIRE HIM!!!11!1!!
November 15th, 2010 at 12:22 PM ^
He ain't in the Big East/WCW Anymoar!!!
November 15th, 2010 at 11:47 AM ^
It's hard to see him getting invited back for a fifth year unless he really turns things around. Hopefully this is the year where he is needed the most.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:59 AM ^
prolly get him a white t-shirt stained red from the players blood Barwis is training for HARD EDGE week.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:53 AM ^
One of the greatest coaches ever, the non-beloved Jimmy Johnson, had one rule on judging players: performance.
That's a good rule.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:55 AM ^
Nothing really. I'm just at work. Working on an excel project. Wish it wasn't Monday, but other than that, I am doing alright.
A. Gibbons
November 15th, 2010 at 11:57 AM ^
The fact that the coaches are biting the bulett and recruiting kickers this year says it all. Next year either Dan Grochowski or Michael Branthover will be our kicker. With Matt Goudis as a darkhorse candiate.
November 15th, 2010 at 6:01 PM ^
What's up with awesomely named kickers?
November 15th, 2010 at 12:00 PM ^
the foot flu.
November 15th, 2010 at 12:02 PM ^
Recall that Gibbons is not a walk-on. He is a scholarship guy who graded highly (from ESPN):
Gibbons is a very consistent place kicker. He gets into his field goals quickly and has smooth tempo. Powerful leg and has kicked several field goals over 40 yards including a 52 yarder. Kickoffs average about 5 yards deep with good hang of about 4.0 seconds. Footwork isn't quite as fluid as field goals. Punting is above average and is solid under the rush. His drop, leg extension, and steps need worked on as a punter; but is a very good place kicker and kickoff man.
Also most college programs including Michigan don't have a coach who specializes in kicking or punting, so these guys are largely on their own, i.e., they don't get "coached up" on the fundamentals.
So we have a player who came in highly rated, redshirted his freshman year, started and subsequently struggled this year before being replaced by the now two-headed kicker (Broekhuizen / Hagerup).
So any real information or reasonable speculation on how this plays out? Knowing that kicking issues are often psychological in nature, I would hope he could work on this over the off season and come back ready to contribute solidly next year. Either way, as has been repeatedly stated on this board and elsewhere, we should recruit another kicker.

FIRE KORNBLUE!!!!!!!11!!!!!!!
November 15th, 2010 at 12:02 PM ^
Seth shouldn't even be trusted for extra points. Gibbons was one of if not the best kicker in the nation. What happened?
November 15th, 2010 at 2:26 PM ^
Broekhuizen is 42 of 43 on extra points this year, and the one miss was in the miserable conditions at Purdue. Even on field goals, his shortest miss has been from 38. He isn't bad on short kicks.
November 15th, 2010 at 12:06 PM ^
Why don't you try booting a football through uprights in front of 110,000 as a 19-year-old and see how easy it is? Some people just can't handle 220,000 eyes watching them. I know I couldn't.
November 15th, 2010 at 2:20 PM ^
very confused by the 220,000 eyes....until I did the math.
