03/16/2018 - 5:21pm Awful news

One of my favorite college players to watch as he's impossible to stop when he catches the ball down low.

Other reasons this sucks:

  • My confident smirk for picking Purdue to glide into the Elite 8 has been wiped away
  • Matt Painter seems like a decent guy aka if Beilein likes him, that's good enough for me
  • Purdue is one of the few B1G teams you can root for without feeling dirty
  • Will no longer be able to annoy family and friends by deadpanning, "If he dies, he dies" or "I will break you" during their games

11/02/2017 - 1:05pm Given the nonsense Balas posted

Given the nonsense Balas posted about Peters being a “mistake,” based on his inside sources, I’d say good riddance.

10/30/2017 - 5:30pm Tried to find the Balas story link, no dice

As Brian says, original content might have been deleted per Rivals policy. Probably a good policy when you have "journalists" making stuff up.

IMO Balas deserves the shade that's being thrown. If anyone asks him where he came up with this story on Peters, please post his response. Inquiring minds and all.

10/27/2017 - 8:42am Shameful

Hearing this and knowing Harbaugh was likely informed that weekend further justifies Jim speaking out in a public way at that Monday presser. Purdue deserves to be blasted for this woefully incompetent medical treatment. And those who felt the need to throw flames at Harbaugh? They can eat another dick.

05/06/2017 - 8:35am Denard and Tree

Pure joy, every time I see those clips of Denard and Tree in the stands rooting for the Michigan basketball team. And this GIF is the digital cure for anyone jaded on college athletes.

Possibly there is a silver lining. Perhaps Wilson notified Beilein that he intends to return for another year. A man can always dream.

04/02/2017 - 10:31am Nice piece Ace

Truly a fitting summary for a Wolverine who will live long in the memories of all Michigan fans. And thanks to Derrick for willing himself and his team to reach their potential at such a critical juncture. That B1G Championship banner will always remind me of this run.

The label art is great but otherwise meh. Craft beer has evolved. Bell's not so much. Many better options in Michigan (and beyond) already mentioned in the thread. Cheers!

02/21/2017 - 7:41pm Strategy and User Testing

Brian, this is great news. As someone who has worked as a web producer/strategist for most of my career, there are a couple of things that are most essential for a project like this. First, make sure there is a very clear strategy in place and don't assume that you and other stakeholders already know what it is and all agree. Key considerations: What problems are you trying to solve through this effort? Who are key user audiences (internal and external), what are their needs, and which are most important? How will you measure success?

Second: Test, early and often. Hopefully, Human Element integrates user testing into their process and starts that as early as possible.  If they are an Agile shop, and who isn't these days, ask them about Agile UX. Get a small group of testers together including your staff and some real site users to provide input, help shape the core site concept, and to test functionality and usability throughout the design and build. Skip this and no matter how great the tech is, the end result may disappoint. I'm sure you'd have no problem getting site users to volunteer their time.

01/31/2017 - 9:55pm Paging MGoBlog HD guy!

To whoever coded the HD app.  Really enjoyed using your app and am stunned it is being squashed in favor of a far inferior product.  Hoping you and the powers that be can put your heads together and figure out a way to bring back the app we all knew and loved. Would be happy to pay for the HD app.

01/31/2017 - 7:34pm Damn, HD now doesn't work!?

I posted above comment using the HD app, but went back a bit later and got a message that it is no longer supported. That sounds quite intentional, and if so, kind of sucks.

Add me to the list of people who would gladly contribute $ to MGoBlog for a high-quality app or a mobile-friendly site redesign.

Still kind of stunned by such a sudden, hard line move.

01/31/2017 - 5:15pm HD app >

I switched to the HD app long ago and have never looked back. The old app crashed a lot and sounds like it continues to do so.

To echo a previous poster, creating a mobile-friendly website would likely obviate the need for a separate mobile app.

01/25/2017 - 7:37am Interesting stuff

Thanks OP. This is some pretty fascinating stuff. Recruiting has changed so much for schools, prospects, and fans in recent years and technology and data analysis are increasingly at the forefront. Not surprised a school like NW who has a bent for academics, but lacks the budget of top football programs would be looking to focus their efforts as much as possible. I'm wondering how many other programs have developed similar proprietary methods.

With the analytical chops at MGoBlog, maybe a similar model could be developed.

01/09/2017 - 9:23am Related Issue

I experienced another issue recently when I was told the version of the MGoBlogHD app I was using would no longer work, so I had to upgrade. However, that upgrade required an upgrade of iOS which my somewhat older iPad will not install.

To the developer, if you are reading this, I'm pretty sure the App Store allows you to maintain an older version of the app that is backward compatible with prior versions of iOS, and the App Store will automatically make sure users get the right version of the app depending on their OS. If possible, would be nice to make a version available in the app store that still works for those using older hardware that cannot be updated. Thanks.

12/16/2016 - 8:18am Nice work

Feel like a casual prospector who just tapped into the largest vein of gold ever discovered. So many to choose from, but I think my favorite is:

Dear Jim Harbaugh,
please go back to the NFL. You're fucking up our shit.

Well done, OP. Very well done.

Our memories must be short because we have suffered many more awkward moments with our own head coaches in recent years. I don't take any pity on D'Antonio or the Spartans, but I also feel no need to bury them. Coach Harbaugh wins with grace and I'm happy to follow his example.

09/16/2016 - 12:05pm Freddy P Soft GIF idea

I don't have the skills to do this, but I'd love to see a GIF that combines Harbaugh's Speight shoulder pad, helmet slap routine before the opener with a Freddy P Soft character that keeps popping up, i.e., Harbaugh whack-a-moles the hell out of Freddy P Soft to make sure Speight is ready to go. You could also have Freddy P Soft popping out of the turf only to be stomped by Deveon on any one of his five or six tackle-breaking runs.

Oh, and I may be drinking right now.

09/09/2016 - 12:36pm Pretty sure you are a troll

Pretty sure you are a troll, but if this was serious, you are looking at it the wrong way. At Michigan, especially this season, Harbaugh is proving that the best will play regardless of their year in school. Michigan has huge appeal to elite talents who want to see the field early.

08/24/2016 - 10:41am Think you misunderstand Ira's role

Ira may not be the show's greatest on-air personality--and I suspect he would agree--but as the show's producer, he makes sure everything works behind the scenes and allows Sam and others to shine.

Also, WTKA is a local radio station with a relatively modest budget which probably requires that Ira wear many hats, some better than others. I, for one, am grateful for the job he does at the Michigan Insider because that show and this blog are my go-to sources for everything Michigan sports related.

08/10/2016 - 9:38am Jimmy don't care

Good shtick is still shtick. And Jim Harbaugh just doesn't care about any of this. I suggest OP follow the coach's lead.

07/31/2016 - 8:31am It's a crying shame

It's a crying shame what Green Flash did to the Alpine beers. Getting them on the East coast before was a lot of work, but well worth the effort. Now I have to look away when I see them turding on the shelves.

05/15/2016 - 6:08pm Pat Hentgen

I grew up in Fraser, same town as Pat Hentgen who would later win a Cy Young as a Blue Jay. We met in the finals of a one-on-one basketball championship for the town's rec basketball league. I was a couple inches taller than him, but he had a nasty left-handed shot that proved difficult to defend. It was a tight game throughout and I won by a point only after heaving a shot from the top of the key. Bill Freehan, Detroit Tigers catcher from the '68 Worlds Series champs handed me the trophy. That was all good until I realized later he'd given me the girls' trophy (the gold boobs were a dead giveaway).

In high school, I played intramural hoops against Allen Jefferson who was a state 100 meters champion and an all-state running back at De La Salle. He went on to Michigan and played for Bo, but a promising college career was cut short due to injury. In the intramural game, I got a very close look at his midsection as he easily elevated over my attempted block for an authoritative dunk. We lost by dozens of points.

In college, I once got called over to center court at the CCRB as a scrub fill-in for a game featuring several Michigan players: Glenn Rice, Terry Mills, and Rumeal Robinson. They were just goofing around, barely breaking a sweat while I left the court gasping shortly after. Details are a bit fuzzy now, but I'm pretty sure I did not fill the boxscore. At all. But I did get to witness a fair number of Rice's long, smoothly stroked threes and a series of alley oops most finished by Rumeal who had tremendous ups.

04/27/2016 - 11:41pm Dark Lord

Cool event, but Dark Lord beer itself, eh, not so much. The variants are better, but honestly even those are overhyped.  For example, BVDL: not nearly the beer that Vanilla Rye or FO is.
