Stephon Herron Jr. Reportedly Firm on Commitment

Submitted by njvictor on

247's Josh Newkirk is reporting that Stephon Herron Jr. is firm on his commitment to Michigan and he is "not looking right now." It seemed to be a foregone conclusion that Herron would flip to Stanford, but it seems that may not 100% be the case right now. He technically may not be lying about not looking right now as some believe Herron is awaiting admission to Stanford to flip his commitment, but hopefully we can take this at face value. Take this news with a grain of salt, but I'd definitely like to see the coaches get Herron on campus soon and try to sure him up on his commitment

Sam Webb is a smoke blower for the team. He gets good inside info and his gut feelings are worth paying attention to but outside of those everything he says should be taken with a large grain of salt. Anything he reports on is something the staff wants out in the public and it’s why he never says anything negative. He’s essentially a mouthpiece for the team. Practice hype is practice hype. Milton isn’t playing this year.

YOur post is one giant contradiction!  You say Sam gets good inside info and his gut feels are worth listening to.  But then you tell us we shouldn't listen to anything else from him.  Problem?  Problem - all he reports is the inside info he gets!  So we should know his inside info is good, but we shouldn't listen to him.  Got it...

I will agree, though, that Milton talk is Spring hype.  I don't expect to see him on the field...

I worded that poorly. We should trust his gut feels because those are straight things he is told from the staff. Everything else he reports is essentially a pr person for the program. He reports exactly what the coaches want out from practice. It doesn't make it always wrong, but take it with a large grain of salt because its also what the program wants out. Webb isn't a reporter, he doesn't have sources leaking him things the coaches don't want out, he isn't releasing reports on what parts of the team aren't performing and have the coaches worried, etc.  We should listen to him because it gives us a sense of what the coaches want known, but not as if it is completely true.

Players, coaches, and observers have all gone out of their way to say how excellent of a spring Milton had. It's not just smoke. Sam isn't saying that anyone told him that he would be playing but that if the Fall goes like the Spring did he "wouldn't be surprised" if he played.

All you need to take out of that is that Milton had a much better than expected spring and looked great. Spring is still spring, but that's promising for the future at worst. And honestly, who cares if he redshirts or not if he's actually that good. That likely means he wouldn't be staying past graduation anyway. He has an NFL body type with an NFL arm - If he puts it together and plays extremely well, there's no way he won't be an early rounder.

Emphasis on IF.

Completely disagree that Sam doesn't know things that the program doesn't want to get out.  At least one insider has described his access to SH as "unprecidented."  However, you're correct in saying that he rarely puts out any of the negative information.  He is around the program way too much to not know the good and the bad.  I think most of what he puts out there is "true", but typically he is only telling half of the story.  Understand that is the price for his access and be happy for the info that we do get.

So I’m fine if he has a sunny disposition about things. If you want to know who sucks listen to someone else. For knowing who’s in a position battle, which recruits Michigan is high on, gut feels, actually interesting coach interviews, etc. Sam’s as good as we’ve had.

I wonder if they would do something with Milton like Texas did with their 18 wheeler package, where the QB was essentially a goaline fullback. Maybe if Mason isnt fully healed from injury. Other than that I can't see what package he would be that great in. He isn't as dynamic in space as jabrill so wildcat will be less effective that it already was. RPO will be putting a lot of decision making on a true freshman.

A verbal "commitment" is really nothing of the kind.  A player can change their mind and freely back out of it at any time, for any reason or no reason, with no loss to them, so they really haven't "committed" to anything at that point.  Not until they sign a NLI are they actually locked in.

tell your significant other that you're firm in your committment to him/her insofar as you're "not looking right now." See how that goes over.

Regarding Stanford, the 4-star prospect said Michigan fans should not have uneasiness because his commitment to Michigan is “still at an eight or nine” out of 10.

Also - Sam is on Joe Milton's nuts. He wont play this year.

Considering Sam's height, he's more like staring at Joe's nuts than on them.

Btw, we all should be grateful for Sam. Whether you like him or not, does any other college team have a guy like him that brings fans such great info on the team? Yeah, he isn't 100% right but he's a wealth of info if you are a Michigan fan.

I wasnt trying to knock him too hard. He brings a ton of inside info. His opinions of players abilities is where I dont typically trust him, and he is the first to say he is not a scout. To your point though, I really do appreciate the snippits he shares on the radio.

I know he gets a lot of criticism from some on here but I think he is very much a net positive for anyone who follows the team. Heck, if he stopped reporting on the team, what would the people who criticize him do?

Newkirk was the reporter who put out darn near the same exact article on Emil Ekiyor last year about 2 weeks before he flipped, solely because Ekiyor told him his commitment was still strong. All the while Alabama predictions were flying in left and right. Hopefully he didn’t get bamboozled again.

Yeah, there was a CB yesterday for Herron to Stanford by Ryan Donnelly, the OSU analyst for Land of 10.  I believe he attended one of the camps Herron was at this weekend.  I would presume he talked to him or has some other reason to pick Stanford.

As long as he's in the fold, the coaches have a chance.  Need to keep recruiting, and obviously a big season can help.

"Not looking right now." is a far cry from saying, "I'm 100% committed and that's not going to change."  The right now part is an indicator of wavering.  Hear it in recruiting a million times, I'm committed right now.

Still, if he doesn't get accepted to Stanford he's ours.  He gets accepted to Stanford and we still have a chance.

I see a lot of comments about him waiting to see if he gets admitted to Stanford.

Honest question, has he even been admitted to Michigan yet?

I have no idea how long it takes Stanford to figure out admissions, but it must be getting somewhat close?

Also, and I know Stanford is a great school and a good football program, but they aren't Alabama or Clemson.  It shouldn't be a given that a kid will bolt Michigan if they come calling or that Michigan can't win him back.

Looks like a classic placeholder situation.  Saying all the right things while waiting to hear from Stamford.  Not like he can tell Michigan that's what he's doing, no matter how obvious.

With this season having much more success in the W/L column and or D-line throwing sack lunch parties all season long I think will be enough to keep him. Not to mention the hype that Gary and Chase will get from their play and already massive profiles. Just win Baby! Go Blue
