OT: TV Shows or Movie Recomendations

Submitted by NYC Fan3 on

The airlines thread a week ago seemed to generate quite a bit of interest amongst users.  My question to all of you, is what shows or movies would you recommend downloading to watch during the flight?

I was recomended Parks and Rec from co-workers, but am more interested in what the board has to say.

I just watched the three Godfather movies, and Goodfellas, and Casino. I live in a heavily Italian area west of Chicago . . . names like Carmine and Schiavone and Frankie and Maria and Francesca and Comella are commonplace. The meats and cheeses are out of this world. And there are definitely plenty of moms around who dress very similarly to some of the movies. Smh. It is close to home. Still offer Italian as a language choice at the high school, and there are several parishes where the mass is still in Italian. Those are great choices.

Personally, I have really loved watching the Crown. I like to watch movies based on history, and would even watch the right History Channel series. Love to learn something new.

I spent three days in the hospital and the only thing that kept me sane was Black Mirror. I've seen many shows, but Black Mirror is at the top of my list. I can't recommend it enough!

I almost forgot about that.  That was real good.   I always wanted to punch Holden in the face, but maybe he was suppose to be a bit of a douche-bag and that was the point.

I watched about 7 or so episodes and had to stop.  I like when they get into the crimes and interviews, but I got so tired of the personal lives of the Holden and Bill.

The Santa Clarita Diet is Hilarious

Travelers is pretty good for low budget sci fi.

Jennifer Jones and the Defenders for Super Hero shows

Check out the new series Killing Eve. Its 3 episodes in, but its already one of the best I have seen in a while. Other than that, Fargo, The Americans.

Coming of age story really well done with a mix of comedy and drama.  It's set in the mid-1980's at a country club in north New Jersey.  The writers do just enough to embrace the 80s, but don't go so far as to make it an over the top homage to the decade.  I'm through seasons 1 & 2 and am hesitant to start the 3rd and final season because I don't want it to end.

Agree with others on Ozarks on Netflix, you'll be left wanting more after finishing the 1 season that's been done so far.

Will echo the recs for Ozark - Bateman is great.  Speaking of Bateman I've been catching up on Arrested Development. Funny as hell.

Missed out on original Twin Peaks so got through most of it and it's pretty crazy (although I hear it falls off toward the end).

Some others I would recommend -  Atlanta, High Maintenance, Westworld, Big Little Lies, Deadwood, Treme.  Loved Louie too but eh, hard to recommend now.

Some I didn't like as much - Crashing, Bloodline (not bad not great) I know I'm forgetting some but if it doesn't hook me in episode 1 or come recommended from people I trust I usually bail quick - like Lady Dynamite and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, West World, The Path, True Detective (season 1), Better Call Saul, and Sons of Anarchy are all in my must watch TV shows. The Revenant, Sicario, Super Dark Times, The Wolf of Wall Street, Dunkirk, Interstellar, The Departed, The Planet of the Apes trilogy, and pretty much any movie produced through A24 are my top film recommendations.

For drama:

Wind River is a great, quieter, slower movie, good performances from a pretty distinguished cast.

Ozark, if you're missing that breaking bad feeling.

For SciFi:

Black Mirror

Altered Carbon

For Comedy:

I'm finally caught up on Brooklyn 99.  It's like Parks and Rec in a detective unit. Andre Braugher is amazing as the straight man (er... gay straight man).  Give that man an emmy.

And if you haven't watched It's always sunny in Philadelphia, you're missing out.

Ingrid goes west is an interesting indie commentary on social media.

I wasn't really that impressed by the other Oscar nominees.  It was kind of a down year for the oscar bait movies.

All the Marvel movies are sucking the air out of the industry, by making entertaining blockbusters that puts everything else to shame.  All the DC movies (sans WW) pale in comparison.  And the new Venom movie looks like recycled trash with horrible dialogue in comparison to the MCU.

...based on his avatar, that Deadwood is fantastic.  AL SWEARENGEN!!!!  Also, True Detective (Season 1) is awesome.  Season 2?  Didn't happen.  I believe what they called Season 2 was some kind of revenge on the fans, like Halloween III: Season of the Witch and Michigan Football: 2017.

Check out The Terror (from AMC). Excellent cast, beautiful production, creepy and cerebral. Kind of a mashup of “Master and Commander” and “The Thing” (Royal Navy ships trapped in the Arctic ice, must contend with illness, cold, themselves, and a giant murderbear)

If you liked making a murderer check out "the murder of lacy peterson". I was in high school when that happened. I remembered it but nothing about the story or media coverage. It really condemns the media convicting someone before a trial *cough* Nancy Grace.

From Amazon Prime is pretty good. The story takes a look at what life would have been like n 1960's America if the Germans and Japanese had won WWII. The U.S. is divided into 3 sectors occupied by the Nazis, Japanese and a neutral zone in between and there is an active underground insurgency as well. Looking forward to season 3 sometime this year.

Totally depends on what types of shows you like, and who you’re watching with, but I’ll throw out some of my favorites as I watch an unhealthy amount of shows and movies. For tv series = The Wire may not be for everyone (when it was on HBO it was widely ignored for a specific reason I won’t get into at the moment, but if you’re a fan of the show u know what I mean). It’s a masterpiece of a show that somehow manages to show both sides of the coin when it comes to the drug trade (police/dealers) yet over the course of 5 seasons, basically breaks down how a major city works, it’s problems, and the cycle of it all. I could go on and on, just give it a shot if it sounds like your thing. Ozark on Netflix was excellent, Sneaky Pete on amazon prime is one I was recently introduced to and it’s more lighthearted but still has it’s heart pounding moments. Obviously game of thrones, that goes without saying. 7 Seconds on Netflix was well done. The Night Of on HBO is incredible as well and didn’t get enough recognition. First season of True Detective on HBO as well, second season is different characters and plot, not nearly as good. If you’re into documentaries at all, Wild Wild Country on Netflix is one of the best I’ve ever seen. At the end it just depends on what genres u enjoy, and who’s watching with u, hope some of those help.
