In-state recruiting rankings update

Submitted by Youngharbaugh4 on

Both 247sports and ESPN have updated their rankings and in the class of 2019. For 247 their composite rankings have changed because of the change of rankings with other sites.

In-state 247 composite list says we have 2 five-star prospects ( OT Logan Brown #1 State and #9 Nationally, and OT Devontae Dobbs #2 State and #10 Nationally), and 7 four-stars.

For ESPN, the state has 1 five-star (Dobbs) and 9 four-stars, they once again rank Logan Brown in the top20 of their 300 at #19.

I find this to be interesting and wonder if Harbaugh and company are going to ramp up persuit of Logan Brown. He is and has been on the radar for a long time, but committed to Wisconsin while our season was on the downward slope after our loss to them. We are in dire need of tackles and he fits perfectly. Devontae Dobbs is considered good as gone, as well as top100 ranked MSU commit Julian Barnett. One top recruit that we do have a Very strong chance with is Mazi Smith, 29th ranked in the ESPN 300 and teammate of Logan Brown from East Kentwood. I can see him being a player that if committed early, we can use to sway Brown towards flipping.

Below I have included the links to both the In-State ESPN300 and 247 Composite Rankings:

Apparently Michigan really pitches their academics program, their advisers, the value of a Michigan degree. The recruits talk to the players and no doubt hear all about how hard it is to keep up on the school work. This could be good, and it probably really sets us apart and appeals to kids who want that education and especially their parents. But I'm convinced that it is intimidating and a huge turn-off to certain other kids who just want to play ball and meet girls and have fun.

I think if you want to get through college taking the easy way out you would choose MSU-type of school over UM.

If you want to test yourself and see what kind of man you're going to become, see what you're really made of then you would choose UM. At least thats how my Dad pitched Michigan to me over other schools. I should add I did not play sports this was strictly an academic decision.

apparently grew up an msu fan and osu is in second so hasn't picked msu but they are probably the slight favorite and Michigan isn't really in it.

Michigan had 100% of logan brown's crystal ball picks until this past fall, I find it hard to believe Wisconsin has always been his dream school and people would have just ignored that fact when he had a wiscy offer. Wisconsin flipped him because they had a better season and could prove better offensive line development. Not to mention Drevno couldn't hack it as a recruiter as got proven time and time again. Hopefully Warinner and a good season could flip Brown back but I don't know if its at all possible.

I don't get why this staff has such trouble recruiting offensive linemen. We have two massive instate OL that we haven't made much effort to recruit in Dobbs and Brown. You'd think after the past three years we'd be begging them to come.

They've recruited Brown really hard, they just had shit OL development used against them and honestly based off the data you get respect Brown for going with the school with a more proven staff in getting high draft picks for their oline.

Dobbs and the Belleville thing have been incredibly weird but the coach has some obvious bad blood with the michigan coaching staff they need to work to overcome.

Why though would you think though the staff needs to overcome Dobbs instead of vice versa? He's not going to be getting three to four D1 studs per year and why would a coach, with his kids best interests first and foremost push his kids to MSU over UM?  We saw a young man fight with his mother a few years ago, far and away the best D line talent in the state. He went to MSU, got to do what he wanted and now will probably not see a pay day in the future from the NFL.

MSU's bs is catching up to them and a lot of educators at the hs level and parents both are sick of reading about Dantonio's charges on two sections of the newspapers. They are turned off by a coach that allows not only dirty play but sends a driver to pick them up from the jail so they can play ball on the weekends. There is a reason they do their jail time - a red flag on its own if ever there was one - and that reason is so they can get their school work done during the week. Now if they aren't doing their school work because they were playing ball instead of doing jail time, just when the hell are they doing it? It's questions like those and a lot others that we will let Dobbs explain why he's overlooking. No, sir, if any ass kissing is to be done, you've got the directions of the lips pointing in the wrong direction.

Meh, the good records need to be taken in the greater context of the state of the conference at that time: UM in a historic a lump, PSU down, and most of the lower tiered programs not being competitive - basically just a 3 way battle between osu, may, and Wisc during those years. Even the signature bowl wins for Dantonio were mostly last minute comebacks against teams that went too conservative at the end of their games (Baylor, Stanford).

but just like all the other positions, Jim is assembling a roster that is not only talented, but it's going to run deep. We;re getting both OL and QBs, but it has been at a slower pace than expected, but our D has been accelerated greatly with the addition of Brown and Partridge, specifically and keeping one of the best teachers in the game, GM.

People forget Jimmy is averaging over 9 wins a year and some bad luck has cost us more than a couple and that's been in rivalry games, so they're even more dramatic than reason gives. He is doing a great job and in a few years most will look back and say, Damn, we sure over reacted in our worry about Harbaugh, aye? Then, there will always be those that simply like to bitch.  We haven't even had 3 of one of the best wr units ever recruited here on the field at one time, and some are concerned about their replacements four years down the road and saying, "it's all going to hell."  If we go 12-1, I can guarantee you the bitching about "one of the worst called games in our history" will commence if it's one of the best called games we ever had.

It is great to be a Michigan wolverine, but sometimes it can be frustrating as hell, and that's just putting up with some of the others. GO BLUE!!!! We'll be fine.

Three top 100 guys in three classes isn't amazing when you consider that you start 5 linemen at a time in a game. Also, all three top 100 guys are interior guys. Devry Hamilton decommitted and is a tackle. The staff has no one to blame but themselves if we can't field a coherent line in 2018.

Question for recruiting gurus:

Is HARBAUGHs heavy recruiting of the South, Texas, and California having a negative impact on recruiting the state of Michigan and Ohio? If I recall correctly, Michigan didn’t even get a OH commit in one of his years.

I know winning on the field has significant impact into whether a player commits or not. However, I’m just curious if the perception is HARBAUGH has overlooked these two states and it may be backfiring. Was the hiring of Moore and Washington part of an effort to refocus their recruiting approach?

Any thoughts on this, or am I completely off base no this?

I think you could argue that 2017 was the exception. In tow of the three full recruiting years, years d16 and 18 saw zero OH plays and 8 MI players combined. Thats not what you would expect from a team like Michigan that historically has had far better success. I think 17 should be like that every year for Michigan, but it isn’t.

Is not recruiting Texas at the same level he’s recruiting MAC caliber talent. I don’t understand why Harbaugh puts so much effort this early into kids he can get on signing day after striking out on other elite recruits.

The coach’s at Michigan have done a piss poor job of recruiting instate. Piss Poor. They don’t have the relationships in Detroit that State coach’s do. The only coach that had any street credibility in SE Michigan is gone (Wheatley).

The coaches spend half their time in Georgia and the other half mining for under the radar types from Don Brown territory in New England. You just have to hope they can develop into the kind of players that can beat Ohio State.

Exactly, also to note Blackwell is a big deal in Detroit football, he helped State get a lot of those kids. I was told he won’t stop a kid from going to state but his personal relationship with the university and some coaches is sour.

Michigan has no street cred! I’ll let you ponder or pontificate your stance because last time I checked Cass Tech is in Detroit and yeah we’ve done terrible at that school as of late. It’s okay some people love to speak well of our program others just speak, spit, spat, whatever comes out of their mouths.
