In-state recruiting rankings update

Submitted by Youngharbaugh4 on

Both 247sports and ESPN have updated their rankings and in the class of 2019. For 247 their composite rankings have changed because of the change of rankings with other sites.

In-state 247 composite list says we have 2 five-star prospects ( OT Logan Brown #1 State and #9 Nationally, and OT Devontae Dobbs #2 State and #10 Nationally), and 7 four-stars.

For ESPN, the state has 1 five-star (Dobbs) and 9 four-stars, they once again rank Logan Brown in the top20 of their 300 at #19.

I find this to be interesting and wonder if Harbaugh and company are going to ramp up persuit of Logan Brown. He is and has been on the radar for a long time, but committed to Wisconsin while our season was on the downward slope after our loss to them. We are in dire need of tackles and he fits perfectly. Devontae Dobbs is considered good as gone, as well as top100 ranked MSU commit Julian Barnett. One top recruit that we do have a Very strong chance with is Mazi Smith, 29th ranked in the ESPN 300 and teammate of Logan Brown from East Kentwood. I can see him being a player that if committed early, we can use to sway Brown towards flipping.

Below I have included the links to both the In-State ESPN300 and 247 Composite Rankings:

I think with a good season we can say him over to michigan. usually commitments that early dont mean anything Otis Reese was a hard commit for the longest time and he ended up switching to georgia at the last second

really? do you have a link or some proof that he said that? its not that i dont belive you i just find it odd a kid would say that

I second what TELDAR said.  His visit did not go well, he left with a bad taste in his mouth.  He is in my area, and i have connections with his family.  His sister was a D1 volleyball player at WMU.  Wisconsin was his dream school since the first time i met him as a Frosh.  It was going to be an uphill battle, but his visit did not help.  It will be a very tall mountain to climb to get him in this class.

Well that sucks. Based off 2018 and 2019 recruiting looks like in 2021 the goal is going to be winning games 3-0. Hope Brown is sticking around.

Its really hard to be elite without elite talent. Its even harder if that talent is extremely young. Our QB recruiting is good and even with last year I trust Harbaugh on that front. But we still haven't landed an elite tackle recruit in Harbuahs tenure so your tackles then are either going to be hitting on two development tackles or a true freshman or sophmore, by that point DPJ and Black are in the nfl and our wr recruiting class from last year is a big shruggie and 2019 has nobody on the board so we get to do last year again on the wr front with likely not the best wr recruiting class in mcihigan history, etc.

2018 and 2019 recruiting classes are your upperclasmen in 2021. Of course anything can happen, and its a long time from now but recruiting is a lagging indicator, our struggles this past year are directly tied to the end of Hoke and transition recruiting classes and a lot of people pointed to this year as a transition year multiple years ago.

Filiaga, Stueber and Hudson would all be RS Seniors - Honigford as well

Hayes and Mayfield RS Juniors

2019 guys either Juniors or RS Sophomores

Rumler, Jones and Stewart so far, but need a class of 6 OL this cycle I would imagine - all 3 could red-shirt or maybe Rumler plays some behind Ruiz as a C of the future perhaps

Hinton's brother is a 2020 class top tackle - if he comes along he would be a RS Freshman in 2021

so a lot of 4-star talent (or high 3-star except Stewart at the moment is a middle/lower 3-star) so not like it is all hope and pray as the 4-stars should have a decent rate of turning out good

Filiaga is a guard. Do you have 4 guys listed for 2 spots including one guy who is currently a te. I agree if we get good 2019 tackle recruits we are fine, but that is why it’s disappointing to miss out on 2 top 10 nationally in state tackles and not be in on any 5 Star tackles top lists.

he's not wrong though. those are legitimate concerns. however, i do think this class will be a monster when it's all said and done. right now, sketchy, yes. come February, top 5 class, and huge momentum going into 2020

There are legitimate concerns about every class, every year. Michigan got a top 5 class and everyone freaked out about the lack of DTs and offensive lineman. They take a gaggle of RBs and now everyone is worried about them taking one in this class.

It is trolling for effect, to seem thoughtful when instead you are just making generic statements that are always sorta true but are also irrelevant most of the time.

Harbaugh and his staff knows what they are doing. It is shocking to people, I know, what with Michigan riding a 40-game losing streak and recently pulling in the 116th-ranked recruiting class, but I trust that they have a plan for this team.

2016 - Bredeson was recruited as a tackle - because he filled in as a true freshman at guard and did well they are keeping him there

2017 - Stueber and Hudson look like solid tackles, Honigford and Filiage could play tackle or guard, and I imagine Hudson is who is keeping Filiaga on the inside based on how athletic he is

2018 - Hayes and Mayfield - Hayes is a tackle, Mayfield can play almost anywhere

2019 - Jones is a tackle and Stewart has the size like Mayfield

so we have plenty of players at OT - just need some to step up and take charge and we'll be fine

Just need to coach them better.  Hoke recruited the best OL talent in the country (during his first 2 seasons) but with poor coaching  these talented athletes never developed to their potential. Wisconsin does well taking 3 star OL and turning them into road graters.

I agree with AK, but he lost me with "Our QB recruting has been good".  That is straight up delusional.  Our QB recruiting has been so bad during Harbaugh's tenure, that he has resorted to the prayer of getting transfer QB's to come in for a year and save his arse.  We habe yet to see any QB Harbaugh has recruited look anything like a competent QB.  I know it's been a while, but QB's are actually supposed to help you win games.  Crap, we went nuts over a QB coming last year and just making a couple of completions.  That tells us the pathetic state of our QB situation.

Lakeyale13

April 24th, 2018 at 7:37 PM ^

Our "QB recruiting is good" you say.  What objective evidence do you have for that.  What I do know is Harbaugh is having to look and pray for transfer QB's to come in and save his arse because the one's he has recruited cannot produce on the field.

Seriously, when was the last time we had a QB that you actually felt confident with...that you actually thought could go out and win a game for Michigan?  Our greatest hope for the last decade is a QB that doesn't lose the game for us.  One that can just stay out of the way.  Kind of pathetic compared to the tradition that we once had.  But today is a different reality.

final grades. Harbaugh has been here three years and, to my knowledge, has recruited 4 qbs, three of which have not taken a snap, other than practice.  While I agree the one that has played, Peters, was simply mediocre last season, this is not uncommon for any qb with that amount of game time. Give him a season or two behind a decent line, as you should with any position that is dependent there upon, then your argument will hold a little more water.

It could be true that all whiff, but I doubt that. Obviously one is not going to play there because he's a TE, and a promising one at that. However, as you are well aware the season he came back home he was not greeted with a qb with any experience. Unless you wanted him to shit one, the best case scenario right now would have to taken a lot of turns, all positive. There would to have been a few left to choose from in the incoming '15 class, forego any redshirting and you might have a promising returner, but like I said, such woud require a positive return at every measuring point with a qb recruit. Not really likely when recruiting just to catch up.

And when you consider the problems with the OL he inherited, again I agree it would have been nice to see the problem turned around by now. However, he has made attempts and unlike his predecessor did not say, "Well, good enough and they'll improve with time."  He has been working to improve the situation and that's required changes with coaching but if you look there's decent, young talent on the line. The last two 1,000 yd rushers were recruited by RR, as you are aware and they didn't have the greatest number of star talent creating holes for them. So what I'm saying is although it makes neither you or I happy, we are still in the growing process but have been winning at a much higher rate annually than prior to him taking over. One year of single digits in the win column is not going to make me start bitching and crying, as seems to be your tactic and for a very simple reason. Those type of people, of which some of my close friends can be classified, are simply not much fun to be around.

People need to calm down. Traditionally we've gotten the top guys in the state, but that hasn't stopped MSU from kicking our ass this decade. Let Harbaugh and company get the guys that want to be here and let this staff coach them up. One 8-5 year where we started all underclassmen on offense, replaced the whole defense, and were down to our third string QB, yet only a couple bad breaks away from beating MSU and Ohio State and everyone forgets about the beyond solid track record Harbaugh has. In 2016, Georgia was 8-5, Notre Dame was 4-8 and MSU 3-9. We are going to have a damn fine team next year with or without Patterson, with or without a commitment from Dobbs. If you want to be panicky, miserable, and make a fool of yourself, fine by me. But we are going to be fine and logic supports that.

I agree last years record doesn’t portend doom, and that this year we will be a really good team and harbaugh is the best coach for us.

But this is a recruiting thread so yeah I’m going to talk about recruiting and the future and if we whiff on offensive players this class like we did in 18, we are going to have another year like last year where our offense is mostly underclassmen stumbling their way to a mediocre record.

I don’t want to be MSU. They are bringing back more people from a team that beat us and had a better record and more people see us as a championship contender because we have a higher ceiling. That’s recruiting. We went 8-2 versus MSU in the previous decade because of better recruiting. Recruiting matters. And lastly harbaugh isn’t getting the guys he wants. He wanted brown, he wants Dobbs, he wanted devery Hamilton and isiah Wilson and npf and Tyler Friday and Jeremy ruckert, etc. losing recruiting battles and going with plan b doesn’t mean you are just getting guys you can mold and it’s really a good thing.

think that Michigan was on the brink of a substantial recruiting dip toward the end of the Hoke era to begin with and that Harbaugh's presence, his name, and frankly his incredible effort on the recruiting trail lead to the signing of a few huge recruits (Gary, Soloman, Asiasi) and a great class in 2016-2017.  His initial impact had an expiration date though.

He desperately needed to beat OSU and make the Playoff in 2016 and I think you would have seen a lot more success with highly rated recruits if we would have.  Harbaugh really hasn't been "legitimized" yet at Michigan and I think that a lot of guys are getting to the point now where they are saying "they really haven't won anything, they haven't played in the conference title game, they haven't gone to the playoff, why would I go there?"  And as of right now, he really does not have a good answer to that question.

One thing solves it.  He needs to win.  Win the division, win the conference, beat OSU.  Win something tangible and I think recruiting will start to take care of itself.  I think the top end players were ready to put Michigan in that mix of top tier programs but the team has been unable to legitimize itself as a real contender.  This is a big year coming up.  If Michigan goes out and wins the BIG the next two classes will look a lot different than they are shaping up now.

That 2016 osu game really is such a swing in perception and outcomes that was decided by almost nothing and goes to show how ridiculous sports are. If the refs mark Barret short Harbaugh has a win at osu year 2 and is playing for big ten championship and playoff spot ( I don't think we beat clemson so not saying national championship). If that happens last year means nothing and everybody still thinks Michigan is 100% back, literally one fucking stupid inch is the difference between having to deal with Harbaugh and Michigan hating mouth breathers and just being able to enjoy the ride last year and this year.

I'm going to suppose that you are just parroting anonymous comments.

He might not like Harbaugh, but this place is full of guys and gals who read a premium message board for another team and figure that gives them the inside scoop.

When was the last time the state of Michigan had 2 prospects in the top 20 ? This must be a good year in-state

TrueBlue2003

April 23rd, 2018 at 7:36 PM ^

so it is indeed a strong year in-state. Compare to last year which only had 6 four stars and zero 5-stars.

Michigan has....zero of the top 10 committed.  So bizarre. Especially after getting 7 of the top 8 in 2017. Just so important to land top players that will otherwise land at schools on your schedule.

and actually in several different forums.  Think first, population change and all that entails. Let me add there is no difference in the importance certain states place on football at both the high levels of college and high school. The staff and payrolls will explain a lot through the various states.  I don't want to rehash the big reasons but i will point you to research salary differentials through the states, along with staff size. Many are full time head coaches as well and that's exactly what they do, spend about 70 hours a week on football.  It's actually an interesting topic to research and i think you'll learn quite a bit more by doing this research than just gathering info here.

rightly so.  impressive tape, promising potential - hes got a chance to be really good.

i watched jones highlights after he committed and was surprised to read about a teammate rated higher, getting more pub, etc - must be a beast bc i think they stole one in jones.  lucky QB with that high school OL!

Losing out on Logan Brown to Wisconsin is worse than losing Dobbs to MSU. But just not a great look to have two top 10 players at a position of extreme need in state and not get either one. That shit just can't happen, Michigan isn't an elite recruiting state and when it produces elite recruits we need to lock them down.

reddogrjw

April 23rd, 2018 at 7:05 PM ^

because he is a tackle whereas Dobbs will be a guard more than likely

plus, with the Bellview coach hating us we had no shot at Dobbs anyway

someone said Wisconsin was Brown's dream school - if that's the case probably never had a shot there either
