Any news on Grant Newsome?

Submitted by B1G_Fan on

I was wondering after seeing Grant's statement in one of the Shea Patterson transfer board topics, if there were any news on how his knee is doing? Is he practicing with the team this Spring? Not only was he a great tackle prospect but, seems like an awesome kid. I just want this story to have a happy ending.

I honestly don't have high hopes for him making it back to the field. I know he's running and working out again, but nothing in a true football practice capacity. He's not in pads taking hits or run blocking.

Even if he's ready to put the pads on by the start of Fall Camp, that's still nearly two years since he last played any kind of snap. He'll undoubtedly be in shape, but will he be in "football, starting left tackle" shape? That's a tall order. Just an absolutely brutal injury to come back from, and the poor guy almost lost his leg in the process.

If he was ready for Spring Camp, I'd say he was in good shape to be back for the 2018 season and at least be on the depth chart. But with doubts that he'll even be ready for Fall Camp, my guess is that he's played his last down of football. But really, he's gotten to keep his leg. That's a huge win all by itself.

it was a year and a half ago, I am happy for Grant that he is walking and jogging on his own. I think it's time to stop wondering if he will play agian, if he does that is an amazing achievement. I just think looking for updates hoping he will be full go is a waste of time.

I agree that Grant may never play football again and we should be happy with his situation as it is now without football but with two functioning legs.

But to tell us not to have hope that an incredible young man like that may yet get to realize his dream of playing in the NCAA/NFL, a dream he's been working towards his whole life, is just wrong.

Honestly, I would just assume he's never going to play again. If he does, it'll just be that more amazing.

and if he does play again it will just be a feel good story where he trots on the field in a blowout and plays a series.  Anything beyond that is really unreasonable to expect.

Just thankful the guy still has his leg and can walk normally.

Many years ago when dinosaurs walked the earth and I was barely old enough to ride a bicycle a friend of my parents shattered his upper and lower leg. He owned a ski and summer shop and was on the ski patrol and was in his early 30s. Four kids and his business was just really starting to get off the ground. He took a terrible fall and broke his leg in multiple locations both below and above his knee.

The doctors tell his wife that they're going to have to amputate his leg a few inches below his hip. She says to them "If you think you're going to saddle me with a cripple for the rest of my life you're confused. Set the leg and we'll see what happens". So they set the leg and the bones knitted. A hell of a lot of pain. Several months on crutches and a lot of rehab. Several months with a cane. But two years later he was walking fine and back on skies.

This case is completely different. We know the type of damage that his leg suffered and the impact of the internal trauma to his leg. But despite all the massive advances in medical knowledge and the diagnostic tools available to the docs, unexpected recoveries remain possible. So while I have no expectation that he'll ever see the field in anything other than an arranged appearance, I'll still hold out hope that he makes a truly complete recovery, and if he chooses to, returns to the game as a starter before he leaves the university.

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet but if you saw his leg on the Amazon show, there's no way I see him playing again.  Dude is missing a big chunk of his leg.  It's amazing he can even walk.

I think it was posted elsewhere.  He'll try in the fall but inevitably will be too injured to play again.  He'll switch to an academic scholly, graduate, and then go to Michigan Law School.

This kid is tough, smart, and beyond his years.  He's got a helluva future in front of him.

That's why Michigan goes for guys like him because the professional sports dream doesn't always come true.

Just sayin'

At the Med Center. Pretty conservative bunch, appropriately so. Do not see him playing. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I’m a surgeon and it is highly, highly doubtful, in my opinion, that Newsome would be allowed to return. I don’t know the specifics of his case, so there is no HIPPA violation, but his injury is very stereotypical. Posterior knee dislocation, with popliteal artery dissection or thrombosis, leading to lower leg ischemia and compartment syndrome. Saphenous vein graft to re-establish blood flow, fasciotomies that may or may not require skin grafting, and a complex knee reconstruction. This accounts for his long hospital stay, his reports of “almost losing a leg”, which aren’t exaggerated bullshit, and his long rehab. Limb salvage in this case is an excellent result. Playing high level football? No fucking way would I clear him. Would be open mouthed shocked if he received clearance. I just want to lend some reality to those hoping he makes it back. He seems like a great guy, and I wish him the best. The education portion his experience here matters, and from what I can see he is taking that to heart. He should serve as an example for those who put all their eggs into the “making it to the NFL” basket

I've see guys with torn/sprained MCL and ACL that have to be carted off the field. Given a complete knee dislocation with multiple torn/sprained ligaments, along with a damage artery, how could he even walk? Do you think walking off on his own weight did even more damage, then if he would have laid on the field and have his leg immobilized, then carted off the field wold have been better?

Thanks for your professional insight on what the nature of the physical damage was likely to be; it's certainly consistent with the small amount of information that's been revealed so far.

And I completely agree that it would be shocking if he received clearance—if that knee was injured again, the consequences would likely be catastrophic, and thus so would be the criticism of the program and ultimately Harbaugh.

It's horrible for Newsome, but it's not any more disappointing from the standpoint of lost contribution to the football team than what happened to Antonio Bass.

Another vascular injury would likely lead to an above knee amputation, which just.....sucks. Below knee amputations are relatively well tolerated in non athletic life-above knee not so much. To reiterate, if he were my patient, or my kid, he wouldn’t play.

thank you for that post.

I know a lot of people are pulling for Grant to make it back, however, the lengthy delay on any medical clearance and Grant's own recounting of the situation made it appear, at least from this layman's view, that a full return was unlikely.

i was hoping he might be able to make it back as a backup... but your description is sobering.

That said, i am hoping for the best for Grant; seems like a helluva kid.

Pretty muich sums it up. I read it  before, and when it sunk in the reality of Newsome never playing again hit me and I've accepted it. Wish the kid the very best. Class act and will be successful in life no question.

HIPPA doesn’t apply to saying someone is able to play football or not able to play football.

Do you also believe that, because football is a form of war, the dorms are just horrendous 3rd Amendment violations?

Truthfully, the happy ending has already happened. Grant not only retained his leg, but he's also captured a lot of his former mobility. This is an amazing outcome given the severity of the injury. That whole "almost lost his leg thing" wasn't hyperbole. I don't begrudge the coaching and medical staff for giving him a shot, because you owe him that much given the catastrophic nature of the injury and his work in rehab. Still, I can't imagine they had any realistic hope he'd play again.
