Seriously, especially since we seemed to own the end of the period. Think the guys were gassed with the effort to tie and ready to go to OT. Even then they played the break okay, but Banks made a great play and bad luck for Hughes to deflect just enough to make Lavigne miss.

Year after year for 20 years. Basketball sucked, but gosh, the hockey program legitimately could have won at least 5 national championships since '98, and this keeps happening. I'm thinking Josh Langfeld killed a guy or something.

We are apparently fated to have heartbreaing losses even when we have great teams. So the fact that the team overachieved doesn't help much. Even if expectations rise the next few years, I will still be expecting a devastating loss to end the season.

Minnesota Duluth is mediocre. They were the last at large team in. Michigan had a legit shot at a title this year. Better than their shot when the next season begins.

Two Final Fours. I'm not even close as invested in hockey as I am football and basketball, but shit, guys. From what I gather, this hockey team wasn't expected to do much this season. Go Blue. Let's finish 2018 with a playoff bound football team. The way things are going this year, who knows.

that if someone offered you two NCAA tournament appearances in November, most of us would have said yes.  And we got those two runs.  Very enjoyable.  Always sucks to not get the big hardware, but enjoyable none-the-less.

The future appears to be very well lit for these two teams.

This loss hurts.  Yeah, I know they weren't even supposed to make the field, but jeezus effin' christ.  Losing like that, to a team we've largely outplayed in 3 of 4 games, within sniffing distance of Saturday night.

The bball loss sucked, but everything after the Elite 8 was icing on the cake.  I thought we could beat Nova with a perfect game, which we didn't get - so it sucked, but hey, great season.

This should feel that way, but it doesn't.  This game felt like it should have been a win against a team we've played well against.  And a last second goal?  This hurts.

Both teams made it to the Four that nobody thought was going to happen, but damn it feels likes these teams tease us with getting in the Four with nothing to show for it. Again, great runs and very happy but I want a championship. And can we start beating OSU and MSU in football, stop teasing us.

Weak goal to give up so late. Really disliked listening to Melrose & Buccigross basically cheer for ND the whole game especially on that last goal. They basically cheered. Great season overall and I’m guessing most would say this team overachieved in MP’s first year behind the bench. Go Blue!!!!

For those who are wondering, since the onset of the Berenson era this doesn't even approach the top five of gut-punch losses in the tournament. It's only the third-worst loss to Jeff Jackson after 94 and 08. I'd explain more but I'm on vacation with an aggressively hostile autocorrect on a mobile device and the material is too depressing anyway.

Actually the five paragraph essay is much worse, summarizing all of the OT losses Michigan has suffered in the tournament since 1993. But it's not happening. Reason one: I've done it before. Reason two: this autocorrect. Don't be hard on me about 08. Your description of 08 was persuasive to me in revising where I ranked that loss on my personal scale.

Meh. The good thing about college sports is that nobody talks or cares about the champs a week later. Happy drinking and smoking

I know both of these teams outperformed expectations but why can we never get all the wah there and just win something. Always feels like we get to within reach of fhe promised land only to fail again. My fandom balls are numb to the universes kicks

I'm at the point where it doesn't even matter to me that they overachieved.

How many times has Michigan watched a team overachieve straight past them to an NCAA tournament championship since 1998? Why can't it be Michigan for once, if our fully-loaded teams apparently can't win one?

Not 59:54.8. 60. Fucking. Minutes.

If you lose in OT, you lose in OT. Seen that before. But to lose on the last rush of the game when ND had been handing you OT ever since the tying goal is just ridiculous.

I don’t care if this team wasn’t expected to do much...they had a chance to do something incredible, something that the teams that had TJ and Jed and Andy Cogs and JMFJ and Kevin Porter and Chad Kolarik and Tiny Jesus and Carl Hagelin and any number of the “one-and-done” studs who were good enough to play in the NHL before they could buy a drink who left Red out to dry by leaving for the big check before they could glue a championship caliber team together in Ann Arbor were able to do.

But no, it’s about looking to the future and talking about how Mel’s first year squad gelled mid season and made a run to the Frozen Four only to get gutted by the goddamned Irish (again).

60. Fucking. Minutes.

Shit, I’m out.

This one sucks way more than basketball, no doubt.  Always knew Nova was a machine, ND we are at least as good as.  Nova is a cool, clean program that's fun to watch, ND is a major multi-sport rival.  And then to blow a 2 goal lead AND give up a softie at the death like that...

As long as ND doesn't win the title, the frustration of this will fade, and the joy of seeing another Frozen Four banner will take hold again, as will the realization that Mel massively overachieved in getting us here.  But man, right now, this one sucks.  And if UMD blows it, it will suck a lot more.

The story of Michigan basketball and hockey this year is this:

We found money.

Lots of money.  And we kept finding it over and over.

Then we used some of it to buy two $10 Million Powerball lottery tickets.

It sucks that those lottery tickets did not win.

But guys, we still found a lot of money.

We’ve just been been punished to the maximum of our heartbreaking loses the past few years and our own game winners luck has come against inferior teams.
PAIN: ‘15 and ‘17 msu football. ‘16 and ‘17 osu football. December ‘17 osu basketball. ‘18 nd hockey. 1-6 in basketball national title games

But the miracles for the good guys have been underwhelming: ‘15 Minnesota and Indiana football. ‘16 Indiana football. ‘18 Houston basketball. 7-1 in men’s basketball national semifinals

Michigan hoops and hockey combined to go 23-2-1 since February 10th and I walk away disappointed. For those blaming the goalie on the game winner, it was Cecconi's fault. He was beaten and Lavigne had to commit and close off the angle to the driving puck carrier. I don't wanna single out 33, because he's been great, but Lavigne is getting unfairly blasted. A simple 2-on-2 broke down because Cecconi got beat wide. It made Hughes have to tie up with his back to the puck and killed the goalie's ability to stay square which made it a much more difficult push across. Good season. Time to catch up on sleep and work. Go Blue.

Yep. For sure spot on. As I said above, Lavigne’s only mistake on the play was mental in not realize who was on who on that play, and that’s understandable given that the mismatch was off the puck on the carry into the zone.

Michigan4Harbaugh

April 6th, 2018 at 9:46 AM ^

Spot on analysis. Plus, Cecconi did us no favors getting that rediculous penalty after we has JUST gone up 2-0. That to me really turned the momentum of the game, even though we COULD have won it had the game gone to OT.
