I agree that all of these issues need to be absolutely fixed (and some things are being done at the medical school) and it will take time and effort to regain trust. However, why shouldn't people not be allowed to wear Spartan gear? If I see someone wearing a Penn State shirt, I'm not going to think they condone pedophilia. There are tens of thousands of MSU grads (heck there a bunch of UM grads at MSU med school, and on the flip side Nassar went to UM for undergrad) who got a decent education and are good people.

I know many alumni personally and they are great people.  It's really, really, really, hard to talk about this with them.  I can just see the cognitive dissonance and denial...

I would like to think that if the shoe was on the other foot, and this had just happened at Michigan, I would be more tactful and respectful of the victims.

I'm sure there are a lot of good people in North Korea.  However, if they bomb us tonight, I would be offended by someone wearing a North Korea flag to work tomorrow.  Timing is everything.

So how long does that have to last? This isn't a new case either. Nassar, the primary culprit, is in jail till he dies. Strampel is no longer the med school dean, and has been arrested. Simon and Hollis have stepped down. It's easy to eviscerate and blame an entire community, but as a UM grad who's here seeing this unfold, it gives you a different perspective.

We should be very careful about lumping everyone into the same bucket.  However, my obsession with this topic has lead me to read a lot of Spartans actively and shamelessly blaming victims and calling them liars on various forms of social media.

Try it yourself.  Shop around.  It's scary as hell.  I'd say some tact should at least last through tomorrow.  It won't though.  Even in light of this latest revelation, people will obfuscate and victim blame.  It's very sad to me.

Also, it took MSU 18 months to fire this guy.  They already had access to his computer, but they didn't bother to look at it.  They only fired him when he became a liability.  This is "fresh enough" to warrant some tact on the part of good Spartans everywhere.  Wear your gear I suppose...  I'm just saying I don't think I would.  I really beleive that of myself.

I can't speak for those Spartans. From what I've seen first-hand, absolutely none of the med students blame the victims whatsoever (in fact students are actively working with administration to create change) and it seems the undergrads have also rallied behind the survivors. When you have as large of a community like a MSU or UM or OSU, there are going to be some idiots with terrible opinions. How I've been raised, and as someone who's going to become a physician, it's very important for me to not cast overaching judgments and/or place blanket opinions on an entire community without hearing individual perspectives.

On the flip side, someone might want to wear a Penn State shirt or a MSU shirt because they do have some pride in their school for giving them a  solid education, and they might want to wear it because they want to show there are normal, good everyday people who live their lives in a way much more fitting of these institutions' values. I completely understand your point about tact, and I probably wouldn't have worn such an outfit a couple months back either. I just think that it's never so black-and-white.

As you should. Words can only mean so much. My hope is that MSU will rectify these wrongs, and ensure that something like this never occurs again. In fact, I hope every institution looks at what happened at Penn State or MSU or elsewhere and has the protocols in place and the right people in charge to ensure things don't get swept under the rug or escalate to this level.

I would feel ashamed and would not want to be associated with what is going on there. I am a Catholic. When the priest scandal broke, I know I wasn't proud of my institution. I certainly wasn't rooting for the institution. It was a period for reflection and contemplation. For me, I wear my Michigan stuff because I am proud of the University and my affiliation with it. At some point the Nassar/Stampel/Izzo/Dantonio stuff will be far enough in the past that sporting Spartan gear won't be linked to that, but right now? It's too soon, in my opinion.

Speaking to my Spartan friends about this latest travesty, they are saying "Strampel should be fired and prosecuted just as any pervert at any institution should be fired and prosecuted..."

Basically implying that Strampels, Nassars, and the people that turn a blind eye on them are everywhere.  MSU is just getting picked on because it's "under a microscope."

"The media people are extrapolating the independent actions of two bad apples onto an entire University." Yada, yada, yada.  "This culture of sexual assault is a myth created by ESPN...  Everyone who believes a culture exists is sour regarding MSU's recent success in athletics."

I was told that the president sends the alumni groups weekly emails with the latest spin.  I'm not sure if that is where this narrative is coming from, but it seems to be the new narrative.  It's all horrifyingly predictable at this point.  Feed the lemmings bullshit until they get bored.

A Spartan at work thinks MSU won't pay a dime. That they have governmental immunity supposedly and that the state of Michigan's general fund will pick up any tabs as the endowment is contractually tied to other things. Since Nassar is sports related, could they raise football and basketball tickets by 50 bucks to pay back the victims over the course of years?

and I no longer practice law.  However, if I recall anything, it's that the law is not nearly as black and white as people think it is.  I've read US Supreme Court majority oppinions that clearly ran contrary to the black ink in the Constitution.  I mean, some of the justices will strait up tell you that black is really white and they will do it with a strait face...  Judges tend to pick what they see is a just outcome then they figure out a way to "interpret" the law to allow justice to be done.

MSU is going to pay a lot more than a dime, regardless of the black letter law.  That said, it''s hard to know what the black letter law actually says about this?  I think the "taxpayers pay" thing is a scare tactic from Engler to sour the public on the victims.

I haven't taken the time to dust off the ole law books, but that is my gut feeling.

She sayd MSU is trying to deny all responsibility

 Pinned Tweet

Larry's boss is arrested, his file contains numerous allegations of sexual harassment that MSU ignored. In 2 days MSU will file to dismiss all claims of responsibility for Larry being allowed to abuse for decades. Unacceptable.

  1. Affidavit 33: "Nearly one month before the OIE concluded its investigation. . .Strampel authorized Nassar to begin seeing patients." This is a direct violation of Title IX requirements. Tomorrow MSU refiles their brief denying all responsibility for Larry's abuse.

  2.

Affidavit: Statement 24: "Also uncovered on Strampel's work computer were pornographic videos and a video of Larry Nassar performing "treatment" on a young female patient." Tomorrow MSU files another motion to deny all liability.

there an MSU band teacher or director that was involved in a sexual assault incident involving his students? I may be mistaken but I seem to recall reading something relating to it.

Njia

March 28th, 2018 at 7:35 AM ^

His band was perpetuating hazing practices that had gone on since long before he had been a member of the band himself. Some of those “traditions” were found to include harassment after some of the members complained to OSU administrators. Hard to say that they weren’t harassment. New members were forced by upperclassmen to march partially clothed and were given sexually suggestive nicknames. He was fired in 2014, and later sued OSU for wrongful termination. Courts in Ohio (both federal and state) found for the university.

Is the local media going to finally turn and do their jobs? On this Strampel case, Mlive had a small blurb on how Engler called the ESPN OTL report on Dantonio and Izzo "sensationalized," but offered no evidence of factual errors by ESPN.

Imagine what they might find on his home computer.  My understanding is that all they have found so far is that Dr. Stampel was a perv who was into college students.  There is no clear indication he shared Dr. Nassar's enthusiasm for minors.  But if he did, boy howdy!  I've acted as a preliminary hearing officer in several child pornography cases (that'll make you want to take a hot shower afterwards...)  In the cases I saw, it was never just a couple or a dozen images; it was hundreds or thousands.

This is so far beyond even an athletic department issue. The entire school needs to be shut down. Michigan State University is not an institution of higher learning. It is a danger to send your kids there. It's sickening that this was allowed to go on for so long in our state, unchecked, while students and fathers and mothers paids 10s of thousands of dollars to send their daughters into that environment.

but not every student, administrator or faculty member is guilty.  The saddest part of this is that yes, Izzo and Dantonio have been GUILTY of supporting athletes who have committed crimes and/or sexually abused women.  Instead of exposing their participation - the Nassar story is allowing them to hide.

The corruption within our society is terrifying ... because it is directly tied to Federal and State agencies that were created to protect innocent people (ie - the general public), but the corruption is SO DEEP that these corrupt agencies are protecting themselves, so they can grow their power and money.  Perhaps saddest of all is the fact that these corrupt agencies have people within the media to help them hide their role, and typically control how and when the "news" is presented.  So the all out protect football and basketball is in high gear right now in East Lansing ... and they'll probably get away with everything AGAIN.  Just really sad.

Go Blue!

Nassar, Stampel, choosing ignorance, going as far as doctoring internal investigations, things being shut down in the prosecuters office due to the influence of MSU Athletics.

This is far more than two doctors.

If this is going on at the University of Michigan, I will say the same thing. These places are supposed to be institutions of higher learning. They are supposed to move our society forward. They should be a shining example of all that is right in western civilization. Instead they are corrupt, money hungry organizations that society forces down it's members throats, inflicting huge amounts of emotional and financial burden onto teens whose general education fails to even properly explain what a loan is before signing up for them. The morality of it all should already be in question, before a rape culture is even chosen to be covered up.

The University of Michigan is at least the best of the bunch. If they ever pull this crap then they no longer get to be the Leaders and the Best.

It was good for Mork to try to repair his image by defending the memory of Mike Sadler.  People will defend him on that basis when the other shit comes out about him.

Ramblin

March 28th, 2018 at 3:27 PM ^

They will defend him if a video surfaces of him cheering on a rape.

He recruited Autson Robertson to campus knowing he was a sexual predator.  Autson Robertson then proceeded to rape another girl on campus.  A lot, not all..., but a lot of proud Spartans could care less.  If you don't believe me, start surfing the internet and talking to your Spartan friends about it.

Dantonio passed the buck to the admissions folk.  "Well, I did what I was supposed to, and they thought it was ok, so I'm not morally or legally responsible.  Go Green."  It is at least 16 people now that have sexually assaulted women under his watch and tutiledge. Yet he is still a hero.  There is something very, very, very, disturbing about that.  It is nothing short of a lesson on human nature and the ability for people to rationalize away evil if they feel they are somehow identified with the people doing the evil.

My new strategy is to ask his supporters a simple question...  What if it was your daughter?  Would you be OK with Dantonio continuing on his current path?  Knowing that he recruited a known sexual assailaint to campus and that assailant raped your daughter?  Is football that important to you???  It's just complete bullshit but he is a part of the crazy cult.  That's what MSU appears to be at this point.  A crazy cult.

It's not ok to blame victims when your precious football and bball programs are accused and then turn around and be outraged when some Dean is outed...

Now, a few bad apples are going to slip through the cracks.  However, in the case of Robertson, this was a known bad apple and MSU rolled out the red carpet for him.  He then raped someone.  Most people don't care.  It is just insane and there is no defending these people at this point.  I'll probably lose some friends over it, but I'm done listening to the "it happens everywhere" line.  I'm just done.
