No more "Michigan time" starting 5.1.18

Submitted by dnak438 on

For those of you who haven't seen it, "Michigan time" (classes start 10 minutes after the hour) will be no more, effective May 1, 2018:

I know this isn't actually a big deal, but personally I HATE this. I loved Michigan time, especially for 9 am classes. That was true when I was a student, and it's true now that I'm a professor. I teach at a public university that starts classes on the hour and I really don't like it at all.

Didn't like it at first. Read the article, Michigan Time will still exist essentially, classes will just end 10 minutes early now. Same deal as before, makes sense from the article.

I feel like I’m taking crazy pills reading the comments here and in the daily article. Class isn’t ending “early”. It’s ending on time. On time just now happens to be on the 50s. I get it’s a unique tradition (which I happily adopted while in school), but people saying it’s going to cause issues don’t understand math.

I mean, what seems easier to grasp:
1.) Class goes from 8:00- 8:50, next classes start at 9:00
2.) class is scheduled from 8:00-9:00, but you don’t need to be time. Ours next class scheduled for 9-10 won’t really start until 10:10

Gotta say I was super confused by this at my freshman orientation why this was touted as this revolutionary concept.

'We have this super cool system here at Michigan where classes start 10 minutes after the hour. This way you can schedule back to back classes at 9 and 10 for example.'

So you have 50 minute classes like every other school but just decide to list them as an hour?

Makes total sense to get rid of this and just go by the clock for consistency, but it is sad to see a tradition go.

This worked very well for me when I was in the SSW. 8-12 Tuesday morning classes were a lot better when they started 10 minutes late, because finding a parking spot on East U was hard. Also, my 2-6 followed by a 6-10 was good when I knew I had a 10 minute break to run to Espresso Royale or the Village Apothecary for a snack/caffeine

Such a joke that "people found it confusing and had a difficult time with it" - its been that way since 1930 and I always thought it was a charming thing that I'll forever associate with my time at Michigan.

Sad to see it go.

When I moved to Los Angeles 20 years ago, I started hearing about "Hawaii time." After someone explained it to me, I said hey, that's just like Michigan time. I've gotten along just fine with the Hawaiians ever since.

During summer internships and when I first started my job after graduating, I was mentally programmed to assume a 9am meeting started at 9:10am... and then I'd have a realization  at 8:58am that Michigan time doesn't exist in the real world and I'd have to haul ass across the office to get to my meeting on time

And yet another one of the little things that could make Michigan a quirky and fun place goes by the wayside.

And, really, if you couldn't figure it out, what were you doing at Michigan?

a tradition stretching back to 1936, because it did not exist when I attended in the 1970s. Class started on the hour. Period. If the professor was fifteen minutes late the class was considered canceled. Mutual respect for time was the rule. Now some professors gave a couple minutes cushion, but generally less than five minutes.
