Who are We??? A Question I've Always Wondered.

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on

Its summer, there isn't a whopping amount going on, thought it would be a good time to ask this question that I've wondered about since I joined the MGoBlog community. Very simply, I've always wondered in a more general sense (not about anyone specifically) who all of you are (categorically speaking of course). Would appreciate any of you who choose to participate in this unscientific study, feel free to answer with one of the following categories that best describes you:

1) high school student

2) University of Michigan student

3) student at another University or college

4) Michigan alum

5) Non-alum Michigan fan

I know many of you relish your anonymity but again, just trying to figure out a little more about who comprises the MGoCommunity.

And for the sake of fair play - I'm a 4, Michigan alum of over a decade.

Paternal lineage:

Me, my dad (1964 BS-IOE), my grandfather (1934 BS-Astronomy, 1935 MS-Astrophysics, 1937 PhD-Astrophysics), my great grandfather (1908 BS-ME), my great great grandfather (1883 Law).

I'm 3rd generation on my mom's side.

My brother also has a UM degree, and each of my parents had at least one sibling with a UM degree.

Mine is one of about 50 families, according to UM, with five generations of grads.  We've been told that there are 8 families with 6 generations, and no seven generation families, as of a few years ago.

3rd generation 4 - along with my two siblings who are 4s - they are much more rabid Mich fans (scary as that might be)... my daughter likes the Ducks unfortunately (give her time...she's only 9), and my wife is a fighting Missionary from Whitman.

CoE, Aerospace Engineering, BSE '08 MSE '09. My parents both went to EMU, but are converted Michigan fans since both of their kids are Wolverines.

My parents met as RA's in the same hall at Markley.

My grandfather attended Michigan.

My great grandfather attended Michigan.

My two younger brothers go to Michigan.

so.....    yeah.

Too late...we've got a 4-month old, fully equipped with Michigan paraphernalia.

That said, we live in the LA area, so there's a meaningful possibility our progeny will attend Berkeley, Stanford, UCLA or USC.  I'd probably come to terms with a child going to the first 3, but USC would be a problem for me, even though my wife attended USC for grad school (she went to Michigan for undergrad).

I am really happy to see everyone being so honest, and, I must say, I am really, really relieved. All this time I thought I was "different". This thread has made my summer.

Wait...These numbers are everyone's penis size, right? Or should I actually read the OP?

Grew up in-state, very nearly a 4--basically had my whole freshman year (would've been '99) planned out before last-minute change of plans had me heading east. Slowly converting everyone I know into fans as well, including my GF from Ohio (tho she's from a U Cincinnati family with no particular OSU allegiance).

Brooks Conrad!!!! Just had to say something about that when i saw a fellow Braves fan!

Back on-topic, I'm a 5. I've lived in Georgia my whole life, but both my parents grew up in Michigan (My Dad is a 5).  I doubt I'd have been able to get into Michigan, but I didn't even bother applying because there's no chance I could've afforded out-of-state tuition. Graduated from another college last year.

I'm a 5 and a 3,  but I desperately wish I was a 1 again. Why you might ask? So that I could do the things necessary to became a 2, and eventually a 4. Seeing all these 4's has all of a sudden given me an inferiority complex. I think I'm going to take my ball and go home now.

Student at BGSU, i hope we (Michigan) kick my (BGSU) ass all over the field on September .  I am down to three course left and cant wait to start grad school.  Probably at Wayne State or maybe Michigan-Dearborn (holocaust studies program).

Class of 2014 counts as "2"

"4"s at grad school count as "4"s

and other than that, most current status applies giving us:

CHART? Chart:

Infer what you will from this smallish sample size.

I assume the data indicates that our alumni have loads of leisure time, which obviously means they're wealthy.

Just got the call from Ross. I'm going to be getting my MBA from Michigan this fall. C/O 2012 baby! Any other MBA students frequent this blog?

Civil Engineering.  c/o 97.  Horrible time to graduate as Michigan goes on their NC run in 1997.  Hey, but at least I had a 9-0-3 season my freshmen year (5 year plan)............

I am doing the distance learning thing through UM-Dearborn for my Graduate degree in Engineering Management.  Still unsure if that qualifies as a 2 or a 3.  Since I am out of state and could never afford to get my undergrad at UM, I consider it a 2 (or at least as close to as I will ever come).  But, that's just the way I see it.  Thoughts?
