Have there been DCs who tried and failed as HCs? I can only think of OCs.
Not that I'm jazzed about Patricia. I don't know that the Pats' defense has been a super inspiring unit the past few years (not necessarily bad, just not noteworthy).

He was not a DC in his previous stop.

Sorry, should have been more specific - I meant DCs from the Pats. Not DCs, in general.

He brought some discipline and they were in playoff contention every year. He just made too many in-game mistakes to keep his job. Hope they find an upgrade.

Bill Belichick has been pretty good. ;)
Edit: He was never the DC under Parcells. Nevermind.

Unlike her late husband, Martha makes business decisions. I'm glad this happened...
January 1st, 2018 at 9:01 AM ^
Martha's willingness to fire people is honestly the thing that gives me the most hope for the Lions. WCF was either way too loyal or way too lazy to let people go.

We don't need no stinking testosterone-laden human beings running our team!
January 1st, 2018 at 8:07 AM ^
While I feel for anyone who loses a job, I hope the fact that the Lions are firing a coach that just went 9-7 is a sign of a higher standard in Lions' HQ.

Agree. Team wasn't ready to play against Baltimore or Cincinnati. Both of those games were winnable.

What names do Lions fans want to see as candidates to replace Caldwell?
Happy New Year to all!

Otherwise I guess you have to give Quinn a shot at bringing in his guy, but the NFL really isn't a coach's league. It's on Quinn to improve in the draft which has been the Lions problem for decades.

Stopped caring about the Lions and the NFL years ago.........frnachise gives new meaning to the term "inept".

This will depend on who they hire as the replacement, and whether they get someone that is a good hire. If not, then the move will be bad but hindisght is 20/20 I guess

I think wanting to maintain continuity in the coaching ranks while the front office experienced turnover is exactly how Caldwell held on to his job the past couple of seasons. Now that the FO is settling down, I'm not surprised they're choosing to move on from Caldwell.

Agreed. The guy is horrible in-game. And sometimes conservative to the point of parody. They were down 10 in the 4th quarter one time with under 4 minutes to play. It was 4th and 2 or 3 at midfield. He decides to punt. It wasn't even a defensive battle. Both teams had been moving the ball all day. Here's the kicker: They end up not getting the right personnel in and have to call a timeout. They punt after the timeout and never get the ball back. That is Caldwell.
10 times out of 10 you should go for it in that situation. It's a shortened (somewhat) field and you have one play to get 2 or 3 yards vs. needing a whole bunch of plays to go your way as well as not giving up a first down.
I want an aggressive head coach, one who expects to win, not one who plays not to lose. And one that can get 11 guys on the field FFS.
January 1st, 2018 at 11:49 AM ^
Caldwell couldn't win a playoff game in 4 years and wasn't going to win any if he remained as coach, so no, he wasn't "your guy". His ceiling is sneaking into the playoffs as a wildcard and getting bounced in the 1st round.
