Bring in Matt Patricia. When was a coordinator from NE did good as a HC?
January 1st, 2018 at 8:53 AM ^
In terms of getting PAID, charlie weis had a true schematic advantage over his peers.
January 1st, 2018 at 9:00 AM ^
Have there been DCs who tried and failed as HCs? I can only think of OCs.
Not that I'm jazzed about Patricia. I don't know that the Pats' defense has been a super inspiring unit the past few years (not necessarily bad, just not noteworthy).

Romeo Crennel

Jim Schwartz
Brady Hoke (DC after he was Michigan head coach)
January 1st, 2018 at 9:37 AM ^
what
January 1st, 2018 at 9:40 AM ^
He’s says those are defensive coordinators who failed as head coaches.
Brady was not a dc before being a head coach but he was after...
January 1st, 2018 at 2:45 PM ^
To bad that Herm Edwards got picked up
January 1st, 2018 at 10:03 AM ^
I know, I know, how could that mustache fail? But it happened.
January 1st, 2018 at 10:39 AM ^
Rodney Marinelli, close enough.
January 1st, 2018 at 11:46 AM ^
He was not a DC in his previous stop.
January 1st, 2018 at 11:40 AM ^
Sorry, should have been more specific - I meant DCs from the Pats. Not DCs, in general.
January 1st, 2018 at 9:38 AM ^
I think Patricia is the guy. I've already seen places stating it may be a done deal.
January 1st, 2018 at 11:25 AM ^
Are also looking inside of the NFC North at the OC in Minnesota
January 1st, 2018 at 9:45 AM ^
He brought some discipline and they were in playoff contention every year. He just made too many in-game mistakes to keep his job. Hope they find an upgrade.
January 1st, 2018 at 10:45 AM ^
Bill Belichick has been pretty good. ;)
Edit: He was never the DC under Parcells. Nevermind.
January 1st, 2018 at 11:14 AM ^
Bill Belichick was the DC under Parcells from '85-'90.
January 1st, 2018 at 8:04 AM ^
time.
With the Lions blowing out the Pack - I was worried Martha would hold onto him once again.
January 1st, 2018 at 8:49 AM ^
Unlike her late husband, Martha makes business decisions. I'm glad this happened...
January 1st, 2018 at 9:01 AM ^
Martha's willingness to fire people is honestly the thing that gives me the most hope for the Lions. WCF was either way too loyal or way too lazy to let people go.
January 1st, 2018 at 10:40 AM ^
We don't need no stinking testosterone-laden human beings running our team!
January 1st, 2018 at 8:07 AM ^
While I feel for anyone who loses a job, I hope the fact that the Lions are firing a coach that just went 9-7 is a sign of a higher standard in Lions' HQ.
January 1st, 2018 at 8:09 AM ^
I’m just glad that they didn’t only look at the record. Two major collapses did him in.
January 1st, 2018 at 8:18 AM ^
Agree. Team wasn't ready to play against Baltimore or Cincinnati. Both of those games were winnable.
January 1st, 2018 at 8:20 AM ^
Had a debate the other day about this.
January 1st, 2018 at 9:43 AM ^
And I don’t feel too bad for Caldwell either because the Lions are still going to be paying him millions next year for doing nothing!
January 1st, 2018 at 8:10 AM ^
Golic & Wingo are interviewing Lane Kiffin right now. Expert in the field.
January 1st, 2018 at 8:15 AM ^
and long suffering at that, wish the Browns would show 1-31 Hue Jackson the door as well
What names do Lions fans want to see as candidates to replace Caldwell?
Happy New Year to all!
Go Blue!
January 1st, 2018 at 8:20 AM ^
HARBAUGH......John
January 1st, 2018 at 8:21 AM ^
That's as bad as it gets. Caldwell would be an improvement.
January 1st, 2018 at 8:17 AM ^
Time for the reincarnation of Daryl Rogers.
January 1st, 2018 at 8:20 AM ^
Bring back Wayne Fontes!
January 1st, 2018 at 8:20 AM ^
Otherwise I guess you have to give Quinn a shot at bringing in his guy, but the NFL really isn't a coach's league. It's on Quinn to improve in the draft which has been the Lions problem for decades.
January 1st, 2018 at 8:20 AM ^
Stopped caring about the Lions and the NFL years ago.........frnachise gives new meaning to the term "inept".
January 1st, 2018 at 8:20 AM ^
Hire Lane Kiffin?
January 1st, 2018 at 10:43 AM ^
Nah, he’s still being groomed for the Michigan job, in 15 years.
January 1st, 2018 at 8:26 AM ^
Bad move imo. Need to have some continuity and continue building the roster.
January 1st, 2018 at 8:29 AM ^
This will depend on who they hire as the replacement, and whether they get someone that is a good hire. If not, then the move will be bad but hindisght is 20/20 I guess
January 1st, 2018 at 8:36 AM ^
Yup, if the new hire works out, I’ll definitely be happy about it.
January 1st, 2018 at 9:04 AM ^
I think wanting to maintain continuity in the coaching ranks while the front office experienced turnover is exactly how Caldwell held on to his job the past couple of seasons. Now that the FO is settling down, I'm not surprised they're choosing to move on from Caldwell.
January 1st, 2018 at 9:37 AM ^
If your ultimate goal is to win a playoff game, which is about where most Lions fans expectations are since they've been emotionally abused for decades, then Caldwell is your guy. But there's no way he could get to the conference championship game and outcoach anyone else. His limit is maybe lucking his way to the semi finals. He's about on par with Brady Hoke in terms of in game management.
January 1st, 2018 at 10:06 AM ^
Agreed. The guy is horrible in-game. And sometimes conservative to the point of parody. They were down 10 in the 4th quarter one time with under 4 minutes to play. It was 4th and 2 or 3 at midfield. He decides to punt. It wasn't even a defensive battle. Both teams had been moving the ball all day. Here's the kicker: They end up not getting the right personnel in and have to call a timeout. They punt after the timeout and never get the ball back. That is Caldwell.
10 times out of 10 you should go for it in that situation. It's a shortened (somewhat) field and you have one play to get 2 or 3 yards vs. needing a whole bunch of plays to go your way as well as not giving up a first down.
I want an aggressive head coach, one who expects to win, not one who plays not to lose. And one that can get 11 guys on the field FFS.
January 1st, 2018 at 11:49 AM ^
Caldwell couldn't win a playoff game in 4 years and wasn't going to win any if he remained as coach, so no, he wasn't "your guy". His ceiling is sneaking into the playoffs as a wildcard and getting bounced in the 1st round.
January 1st, 2018 at 8:29 AM ^
last year? The Fords.
January 1st, 2018 at 8:33 AM ^
Really just one year guaranteed
January 1st, 2018 at 10:32 AM ^
basically a severance agreement
January 1st, 2018 at 8:34 AM ^
Yeah they did, but only this year was guaranteed
January 1st, 2018 at 8:51 AM ^
of his original contract. He was extended for next year, with team options for years after that.
January 1st, 2018 at 8:34 AM ^
I kinda think he should’ve gotten another year? Dude had a pretty good record, went to the playoffs twice. Meh, it’s the Lions and it’s about as good as it ever gets with them. Meanwhile, the Lions are going to be competing with a lot of other teams for a coach, and I’m not exactly thrilled at the prospect of being yet another team that fails miserably playing Bill Belichick Coaching Tree Roulette. That loss to the Bengals was brutal though, and the run game was miserable even for a pass-oriented team. So whatever I guess.
January 1st, 2018 at 8:41 AM ^
I get it. He's not a great game day coach. But nobody seems to want to acknowledge that he's built a stable team that plays for him and wins their fair share of games. He's responsible for a lot, does a lot right, and gets credit for nothing.
I'm glad the expectation is higher than "we don't necessarily suck", but if I know my Lions, they'll be 5-11 next year and this will end up looking like a terrible move.
