MNF: the Shazier injury...

Submitted by Cruzcontrol75 on
Looked terrible at the time. He never moved his legs after contacting the Cinci receiver. It puts the danger of the game into perspective when an ultra talented young man sustains an injury which requires being immobilized and carried off. I wish the best for him and hope it is not as bad as it looked for the minutes he lay on the turf. It's hard not to think of Mike Utley, Reggie Brown, Dennis Byrd & Chuckie Mullins when that happens.

Too popular, and it makes too much money for a total shutdown. I get all the cte concern, but hundreds of players in college and the nfl have been polled and overwhelmingly stated that they would not stop playing if cte and concussions are linked. The love for the game is truly vast. Safety will continue to improve, and rules can be tweaked to make the game safer. No way football is phased out in 15 years. Maybe 50 years if nothing changes.

There was a minute during the OSU game when a few people went down and I questioned the whole sport. If Shazier is paralyzed it's going to affect how much I love this sport.  I know it's just a freak occurence, but I'm starting to have second thougts about the sport in general.  I just don't know if it's worth it anymore.

The problem with padding the outside of the helmet is you also increase the friction. Right now the helmets glance off other objects, such as other helmets, on impact. Once you pad the exterior and create friction you’ll end up transferring much of the force of impact from the head to the neck. That’s not much better from an risk standpoint.

I'm also starting to question my fandom.

When I think of Speight and what he went through or Newsome and what he's going through (among others) and then consider the arguments people give for not paying players I just shake my head.

The pros are suffering life altering injuries which is horrible but at least they "could' sock away a few bucks to have something to fall back on...College players at the centre of this massive, multi-billion dollar industry where even to talentless people who make all those stupid ads get paid, have little to fall back on when they suffer life-altering injuries (and even repetitve minor injuries can be life altering).

The hit on Shazier, the hit on Mixon, the hit on Brown and Burfict. All in primetime. I think that we will look back on this game in a few years as the day that football died.
