Tyler Friday (DT) Big CB to Michigan

Submitted by jbibiza on

Wiltfong Crystal Ball to Michigan for DT Tyler Friday following his official this weekend.

One of the top DTs on Michigan's board.

Any news on Shea Patterson?  We could use another QB.

the reason Tremble is a 3* is because he has a very pro style game at tight end that doesn't translate to every offense as well as being a bit small but I could also see him being a fantastic H-Back. He may be my favorite recruit of this cycle if Michigan gets him. He's very good, he's tough. He may not have Jake Butt potential, but he's a very good athlete. He doesn't shy away from contact, and he runs hard after the catch. He has great concentration, and catches the ball well in traffic. He has a great first step, and is a capable and willing blocker. My issue though, is that part of the reason he catches the ball so well in traffic, is because he doesn't have a very developed route tree, or route running ability. Too often he uses speed to get separation and he has a tendency to round off his routes. That's super fixable though. I would say he's a definite red shirt. Love him.

We were 72nd in S&P+ offense this year.

We were 41st last year.

We were 38th the year before.

That is bad.

And if you're going to blame it on the O line, QBs or WRs (like you should), that's exactly the point.  Those are more important, higher leverage positions that you have to shore up before you worry about your 4th, 5th and 6th TE. How many plays this year did having Bunting, Gentry and McKeon on the field matter?  Very few.  How many did having weak WR and OTs matter?  Just about every passing play.

You only get 85 scholarships.  Using 10% of them on TEs/FBs is super inefficient.  We took 3 TEs on 2016 and only 3 total OLs and look at the big massive hole(s) we have at OT that having some second year OTs could have helped with.

That's horrible position distribution and leads to thin position groups elsewhere. For 2018, we once again only have 2 OL committed.  For a group that needs 5 guys.  That's danger zone. Very questionable to take a third TE when our OL numbers are so low again.

We already have Wheatley, Gentry and McKeon that will be third year players next year, Eubanks will essentially be a second year player and he takes a medical (thus basically putting him in the 2017 class), and we have two coming in.  That is plenty for a position of such low leverage.

Like I said, if we start converting some of these 4th, 5th and 6th TE into OTs, it would make more sense, but I'm shocked we haven't done that yet.

Peters and McCaffrey are good. Speight, Okorn and Malzone are not. What is the problem. We are not shopping for QB's. As far as I am concerned we are good to go at QB. As far as TE's go I see shoonmaker as the steal. Great athlete for his size. Plays QB also. Could see some throwbacks and stuff with him. Nobody liked him as a recruit at first but you can see what the staff saw right off the jump. I really wish we grabbed Luke Ford though, but we should be really good at the TE position.

Bunting kind of got screwed this year, as we look to the future. I saw him open but we had no one delivering the ball this year. Look for TE's to dominate the offense next year. With Black coming back, there is no excuse for our QB not to lead the conference in passing. Of course if we lead the conference in rushing that is okay also.

It's a nice shiny object for us fans, but it would be extremely disruptive.

We are not in the same situation as we were when Jake came here.

We will have talented QBs that have been in the system for multiple years once next season starts.  It's tIme to cast our lot with them.

We have one such QB: Peters. McCaffrey didn’t enroll early; he'll be a standard RS FR next season. The rest of the QB roster will be Malzone and true freshmen. It makes total sense to take a grad transfer. It would be surprising if U-M didn’t. Think of it this way: When was the last time U-M got through a season with only 1 QB taking all of the meaningful snaps? Odds are the backup will play at some point. Since you have rather limited data on McCaffrey, it’s only logical to add someone.

We won't have Malzone either.

But will it make sense for a grad transfer to come here?  QBs almost always transfer for playing time. Rudock walked into a perfect situation.  Our current siituation lis one where we're looking more for depth, not a starter. Granted , it's not settled and a transfer could do worse, but i still think a lot of depth charts will be more appealing.

i like the 2 current TE commits (the staff got a bargain in schoonmaker and i think he and faustin outperform rankings and end up real contributors) but tremble looks like a player too.  guess harbaugh cant sign enough TE / HB / FB types - and if he calls games like yesterday, theyll be well utilized.

also never hurts to further inroads in that altanta area

There is a lot of positive buzz from this weekend from Wiltfong and Steve Lorenz about the recruiting. The outcome didn't seem to put a damper on things.

I always thought if I was a recruit, it would be helpful to see how the coach and team react to a loss. chances are, your team is going to lose some games during a 4 year career. I believe some people react better to those situations than others, Harbaugh being one of the good ones.

If you look at my post history I am not an insider or one to post news per se. Having said that, did we have a 5 star visiting this weekend? I spoke with a friend at the game Saturday who is "associated" with the team and was advised that there was a great deal of buzz and excitement Friday surrounding the commitment of a 5 star. Might be nothing. Either way it looks like a good weekend on the recruiting front
