"Societal outrage" and something being against the law are not the same things. There are a lot of examples at which there is outrage that are perfectly legal; but the ones that come immediately to mind are political and so I'll leave them unsaid. Anyway, I don't want to argue with you here because I agree with your anti-beating-children perspective completely. I just disagree with your implication that there is no outrage about said child beating; there clearly is.

Hey I agree with you.  I was just pointing out that it is technically illegal.

In my opinion, physical discipline of children is absolutely wrong in every account no matter what.  People claim it's how they were raised, and that's true of my family as well, but at some point we have to be willing to admit that our ancestors were wrong.  If a person took a belt to a grown 200 lb man, they'd go to jail no question.  But you're allowed to take a belt to a 6 year old?  That doesn't add up.

Considering that ~0.3% of the entire population of Michigan was arrested for DUI in 2015 (34,000 DUI arrests in a population of 9.9 million) and the biggest group of offenders is 25-29yo men... 2% doesn't seem to unrealistic to me.

Well, I guess this is closer to a Frank Clark incident than a Jourdan Lewis. Assuming the allegations are true -- a big assumption, I know -- what a shame for this young man, and even more so for his alleged victim.

How long until the first "Grant Perry assaulted a women but he is a starter so he barely got in trouble and Nate Johnson did the same thing but was immediately kicked off the team because he is buried on the depth chart" hot take article/comment emerges?

Gonna disagree...  I have no idea what Nate has done to get himself kicked off the team, but I'll put money down that says he did more than arrogantly grab some girls ass.  But I'll use your example - if Rashan grabs some girls ass he'll be suspended (like Perry was) until its resolved.  If Rashan beats some woman (or whatever Nate has done), he'll be dismissed.

I don't think Harbaugh tolerates much, and I don't think he plays favorites under identical situations.  His entire coaching mantra is 'next guy up, be ready to play'...

Imagine this headline: "Billions across the globe stunned as fat, nondescript, 60 year-old man proves the existence of dark magic as he kills 60 people and injures 500 more in massacre with his bare hands from half a mile away."

Sounds like Manuel and Harbaugh gave him a chance to tell his side of the story, and were underwhelmed with it.  I trust Harbaugh to make prudent decisions on these matters and put character ahead of near-term results on the field.

Caveat, of course, that we don't know what happened.  But this decision points toward it being pretty bad - not Grant Perry stuff, but something worse.

Gee, have to wonder how this would have been handled by the Staee coaching staff.  With all the similar issues they've had up there, I don't think they have EVER acted this promptly and decisively to remove a bad actor from the program.  In fact, I recall them waiting outside the jailhouse to ferry some kid to practice once he was released.  Am I right about that?

at many levels.  Thoughts for the victim, and for the young man to straighten his life out.  Hope both get the help they need.  Glad Michigan is a stand up program.

under these circumstances. One, is that Mr. Johnson was not truthful about his actions to the police or the coach, or both, and the story is worse than acknowledged. In any case, the normal suspension bar that denies an athlete a place on the team while working through an off-field problem, civil or criminal matter is always a matter of degree,  policy and judgement and how the incident and its treatment reflects on the university and the team.

Regardless of the details, I am certain they are not the harbinger of good news for anyone. And thus the action taken by the coach.

But glad it doesn't look like our staff messes around with this stuff.  Hoping the kid can get his act together but if it's true, don't need that on the team.

Actually, back in the early '70s when I was an undergrad here and used to trip out regularly, lots of good stuff happened outside at 2:10 a.m.  At least I think it was outside, and quite possibly it was dark. Fuck me, I don't know.

But what I do know, for sure, is that I have never hit a woman.  Period. Straight or stoned.
