Michigan falls to 8th in both the Coaches Poll and the AP Poll

Submitted by pfholland on

Coaches Poll: http://sportspolls.usatoday.com/ncaa/football/polls/coaches-poll/

Michigan was jumped by Oklahoma State.  Penn State moved past USC to 4th, Ohio State stayed at 9th, and Wisconsin moved up two spots to 10th.  Maryland is the next highest ranked Big Ten team at 29th.  And for those who are wondering Purdue received no votes.

AP Poll: http://collegefootball.ap.org/poll

Michigan was passed by Oklahoma State in the AP Poll too.  Penn State jumped USC to move to 4th, and Wisconsin jumped Ohio State to move to 9th.  The Buckeyes fell two spots to 10th.  Maryland is at 28th, and as with the Coaches Poll Purdue has no votes.

So, Okie State has it better than Speight... At any rate, watching a pissed off Tom Brady is a thing of beauty. With a depleted receiver corps, Brady has 177 yards and 3 TDs, in the 1st qtr.

I never had us ahead of Oklahoma St. anyway, no movement as far as I'm concerned. Thought PSU should've been higher than USC as well.

  1. Alabama
  2. Clemson
  3. Oklahoma
  4. PSU
  5. USC
  6. Washington
  7. Oklahoma St.
  8. Michigan
  9. OSU
  10. Georgia
  11. Wisconsin
  12. FSU
  13. Va Tech
  14. TCU
  15. Miami
  16. Auburn
  17. USF
  18. Miss St.
  19. Wash St.
  20. Louisville
  21. Oregon
  22. Utah
  23. SDSU
  24. Vanderbilt
  25. LSU

Florida doesn't get to be ranked off a hail mary over an average Tennessee team. IMO, rankings don't mean much for Michigan. I don't think this team is good enough to lose a game and get into the playoff this season. We've got PSU, OSU, and Wisky x2 in front of us. Have to win them all.

LSU also beat BYU 27-0...meanwhile Florida looked like dogshit versus Michigan just like LSU did versus Miss St.

Florida also looked like dogshit for 3 quarters yesterday. I've at least seen LSU play well this year, I haven't seen a thing from Florida other than a hail mary.

LOL, you don't have a point when you're arguing opinion.

I never said Miss St. is as good as Michigan, but actually right now? I think it's pretty daggone close. I just feel like we'll get better where Miss St. is playing closer to their potential.

My point was both teams had throw away dogshit performances. So let's look at their OTHER games...

LSU has shown a pulse versus BYU. They looked solid.

UF looked TERRIBLE for 3 quarters versus Tennessee.

1 team has shown this season they can play football. The other team has not shown anything all season. Correction, they've shown their QB can throw a 66 yard dime and take care of a horrible defensive play call and mistake by a CB.

1 game versus 1 play, I'll take the full game.

You all are also arguing the #25 team in someone's personal opinion poll that means nothing.

The game was tied when that pass was thrown. Even if it hadn't been completed Florida might still have won in OT. And it wasn't a Flutie/Kordell style hail mary where the ball is just thrown up-for-grabs into a melee and you hope for the best. It was a 65-yard pass in a scramble drill. Either way, still way more impressive to win on a hail mary than to lose by 30 points at home, like LSU did.

Dude, you've got to get over your Speight hate. What did he do, steal your girlfriend? Every post you make on here is about how bad Speight is. Why don't you change your username to umhater323.

..this team is full of holes...until they play a complete game in all facets I'd have them out of the top ten...maybe #11

but only Wisconsin and PSU will really tell us about the ceiling for this team.

Also, we're basically 8th because of our preseason ranking. If you read the preseason preview appraisals of Michigan, you realize that the only reason we got that ranking is respect for Jim Harbaugh. We lost so much from last year that you can tell they would have put us more like into the low teens or 20s just based on what they see.

None of this matters if we keep winning. If we end the regular season 12-0, with every single win being ugly and unimpressive, we're still in the B1G title game. An ugly win there still puts us in the playoff. I'm not quite expecting it at this point, but if the O gets on track, this young team could be quite good in all facets of the game.

Count me among those who believe that polls no longer have much relevance to early-season predictions, but that’s what we’re stuck with for now.  Having ESPN measure team performance using its “Football Power Index” and “Team Efficiencies,” now there’s even more to complain about.  By those measures, Michigan is currently ranked 18th in the Football Power Index (FPI)* and 31st in Team Efficiencies.**  Michigan’s next opponent, Purdue, is 59th in the Football Power Index (FPI) and 18th in Team Efficiencies.

At least there have been some unexpected, but most welcome positive developments for still-undefeated Michigan. The young, relatively inexperienced defense is currently ranked 5th overall by the NCAA, and but for one long TD pass yesterday, they might’ve held each of their first three opponents to no more than 200 yards of total offense.  Take away a penalty and a touch of the sideline, and Ty Isaac would have three consecutive games of rushing for over 100 yards. Devin Bush has been great.  Chase Winovich and Noah Furbush have been pleasant surprises. Quinn Nordin has been close to automatic on field goals.

While Ty Wheatley, Jr. continues to recover from an unspecified injury, Zach Gentry and Sean McKeon seem to have made up for the unexpected loss of Devin Asiasi at tight end. Sophomore Kekoa Crawford and freshmen wide receivers Donovan Peoples-Jones who provided plenty of sparks against Air Force and Tarik Black who leads the team in receptions and receiving yards (and hopefully didn't suffer a season-ending injury yesterday) have been capable replacements for Jehu Chesson and Amara Darboh. Tyree Kinnel appears comfortable in his defensive QB role.

Per ESPN:

*  "The Football Power Index (FPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team's performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 10,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule. Ratings and projections update daily."

**  "Team efficiencies are based on the point contributions of each unit to the team's scoring margin, on a per-play basis. The values are adjusted for strength of schedule and down-weighted for “garbage time” (based on win probability). The scale goes from 0 to 100; higher numbers are better and the average is roughly 50 for all categories. Efficiencies update daily during the season."

It doesn't matter if we're 8th, 15th or 25th at this point.  Just keep winning, win the B1G and it will all sort itself out by season's end.

Clemson looks like the best team in the country right now.

Texas played really well last night.  I think they would've given anyone fits.  Their D did an excellent job of getting to the QB and stopping the run.  Darnold generated some chunk plays but Texas rose up and kept them from scoring.  I don't know if it's the level of the camera with respect to the field but it seems like every skill player on USC's offense has 4.4 speed.  Their plays develop quickly, the ball comes out fast and with great velocity and those skill players catch and run extremely well.  USC still deserves to be top 5.  And Texas' QB played really well for being a true freshman in his first road start.  Texas is a good team that's getting better by the week.  I'd be astonished if they weren't in the top 15 by the end of the year.

We are dead last in all of P5 in red zone TDs.

8th is a gift.

A useless Yankee Candle gift that we will put in the drawer until we can re-gift it to somebody else, but a gift none the less.
