Michigan trying to cancel Washington series in 2020-21

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Buzz going around on Twitter right now.

Michigan was set to travel to Husky Stadium to open the 2020 season with a return game in what would be the 3rd game of the 2021 season against the old Rose Bowl rival.

Michigan is scheduled to play Virginia Tech at home on 9/19/2020 and on the road on 9/11/2021.

UM has been asking out for a while. Big $ penalty if they pull out. Nothing has changed at this point. Still on. https://t.co/G7znqTEbxD

Makes sense. Buttgers will have fenced the garden by then. Need to be rested for the big rivalry games. But seriously this would be a bummer. These games were a big reason why I got season tickets. Wanted a guaranteed ticket for these big games.

Washington proved you don't need a strong NC schedule (or a NC schedule period) to make it to the playoffs. Why bother. Schedule Eastern Michigan.

By that logic UM didn't have a strong schedule last year either since it too had Rutgers

Conference vs NC doesn't mean shit, SoS is about teams. Illinois, Rutgers, Indiana, Hawaii...uh i forget the other paycheck opponent, MSU was every bit as awful as UW's schedule

First they get rid of the Arkansas match up.
Now they get rid of the Washington series.

This is horse shit and we look like a bunch of pussies. Unless we got Bama or USC coming to Ann Arbor don't reschedule.

just keep the games, play better teams, prepare more, and be a better team because of it. Also, if Michigan loses a game and goes undefeated in the conference, they're not not going to the playoff.

My fiancé wanted to plan a trip to Seattle for our next trip. I don't really like going to Seattle, so I talked her into putting Seattle in 2020 for this game and go to Dallas for the Florida game this year instead. I finally win a compromise and now this? Figures.

Although I understand the reason behind this move, selfishly I am very bummed. Looking at our slate of non-conference games the next several years, the only school / city that seemed attractive to visit was Seattle. I love Seattle, and their stadium is pretty amazing. Bummer...

Hopefully they keep the UCLA game on the schedule!

I remember the days when our non con schedule  was usually one of the toughest in the nation and we were PROUD of it..FSU and Miami when they were top 5..Wash, ND UCLA sometimes all in the same year...Sure we didnt win them all but we were known for our tough schedule..Keep the WASH Series and keep scheduling teams like them. The NCAA really needs to clarify how it evaluates who gets in the Playoffs and WHY?

other OOC games those years.  1988:  played ND and Miami, but also Wake Forest.  1991:  Played ND and FSU, but also Boston College.  And in the years between those seasons:  played ND and UCLA, but also Maryland.

GODDAMMIT if this is notre dame or cowardice over losing (as opposed to va tech) i'm gonna shit a brick literally

This makes me crave for dave brandon's return

Um i have a degree from here, can complain if i want. I don't see the point in having a quality team if gonna run from every challenge and rare opponent, if not gonna show that talent off across the country

So let me add: This makes me pine for brady hoke

If they replace this potentially classic matchup with a tomato can, i sure as shit won't be watching

Yeah, because cancelling an appealing nonconference game is akin to hiring an incompetent coach, attempting to plaster advertising anywhere you can, blasting RAWK over the band, lying about student-athlete injuries, and trying to ruin our tradition. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

This is real weak in my opinion. We pay Harbaugh as one of the best coaches in the league yet he has not beat anyone that he shouldnt have. Thats also why recruiting is not even close to Urbans level and the he recruits we will be lucky to win 1 of 5 against him. We need to play the big boys and beat the big boys. Time to step up or get out we hired him to win championships not 10 and 2 like loyd. Time to start winning shit and running from washington just tells me he is scared of harder opponents. As of now we are hust a big circus and im sick of it

HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION PRESENT! Please tell me we are not backing out of another series for a lesser one. Arkansas and now Washington! Wtf is going on here.

If they won't let us out for free, I say we fly the team to Washington in 2020 and kick their ass. Then, for good measure, let's do it again the next year in Ann Arbor.

I'd like to see us play them. We have history with them. If it's between them and VT, I'd like to see us drop VT.

They have an opening 9/12/20. We have Ball St. which can be moved to 9/5/20,

which they have open. I'm ok with N.D.  because we'd have them

at home 2 straight years, and  they owe us.

This is exactly the reason, the ND series has cost us Arkansas and now likely Washington. Looking forward maybe even Oklahoma or Texas too. But if you think we're gonna have back to back home games against ND, think again. We're canceling an away game so we can schedule an away game at ND

Actually, I was looking forward to the idea of playing a good Washington team in a home-and-home, so if it does get cancelled, then consider me a little disappointed. I would have thought this coincided with the idea of making the non-conference schedule a bit more challenging in the resume-bound playoff era, but maybe I am looking at it wrong.

Why do people on here want to see a cupcake game? I wasnt happy when we cancelled with the razorbacks and i will not be happy at all if we cancel the huskies unless we schedule clemson instead. Id rather see washington come to the big house than ND for the hundredth time.

I'd make fun of them, but would be. The way the NCAA Championship is set-up with 4 voted upon teams, there is no reason to play good OOC teams.

If Michigan plays 2 good to very good OOC teams and goes 1-1 and ends the season at 11-2 as B1G champs, does that guarantee a spot in the final 4? What about a Pac-12 or ACC or B12 team that goes 12-1, wins their conference and beat 3 cupcake OOC teams. Who's choosen?
