Michigan trying to cancel Washington series in 2020-21

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Buzz going around on Twitter right now.

Michigan was set to travel to Husky Stadium to open the 2020 season with a return game in what would be the 3rd game of the 2021 season against the old Rose Bowl rival.

Michigan is scheduled to play Virginia Tech at home on 9/19/2020 and on the road on 9/11/2021.

UM has been asking out for a while. Big $ penalty if they pull out. Nothing has changed at this point. Still on. https://t.co/G7znqTEbxD

This sucks. I was looking forward to that series as much as any other, especially now that Washington is a contender again. I started getting into Michigan football in 1990 or so, and I can still remember the two Rose Bowls against Washington. I've never seen a guy run as fast as Tyrone Wheatley on the first play of the second half.

trying to get out of this type of game. These are the schools UM should be playing, rather then trying to add games against ND.

Michigan needs to be a national brand and play teams across the country rather then the same team from Indiana.

The OOC schedule Washington played last year that got them into the playoff.  With that in mind, playing Washington and Virginia Tech in the same season is insane.

Noooooooo!!!!!

I live in Seattle and have a bet with my die-hard Husky buddy- loser swims in Lake Washington after the 2020 game. And we're planning to go to A2 the next year for his first game at the Big House!

I'm right with you bro. I live out here also and was looking forward to going. Oh well I fire I have to make a return to AA. I don't think Washington is going to want to give this series up easily. There non conference is pretty weak until they play Michigan. Remember local media bitching about it. Can't say part of me isn't happy though. I just never trust us going to the west coast. I remember that Oregon series earlier in the early 2000's

It's about getting 7 home games a season.  Michigan has 6 road games on the schedule for 2020, and I'm guessing that isn't very appealing to the AD.  Unfortunately for M fans who want to see this game, Washington is the only one of those 6 games that Manuel is able to cancel.

It better be for another top program. I like that we had 2 out of conference power 5 schools in one year. I hate cupcake games. I want a loaded schedule. That would help recruiting if we are playing top schools and win. Also would shut Pete finebaum and others up.

I'm late to the conversation, but fuck that.

I was pissed when we dropped Arkansas.

I am much more pissed about this.  I planned on flying out for the game.

One thing I see is a lot of people saying is that, well, Washington got in to the CFP this year and didnt play anyone in OOC so we shouldn't schedule anyone either. That's one way of looking at it, and there's risk, but also some upside that should get more recognition than it has in this thread. The flip side is that WA was not in the top 4 for several of the CFP polls and would have been out of the CFP in a scenario where they were competing against other 1 loss conference champions. If the B1G and the Big 12 had a one loss champ, or even a strong 1 loss SEC East champ, it is quite likely that the Huskies would be left out due to having the weakest SOS. Just because it benefited one team during one year's particular scenario under one committee's judgment doesn't mean that it is always going to be the most advantageous approach to scheduling. A win over UW would certainly benefit our playoff hopes too.

Also OSU still got in (over PSU) and had a higher seed too than UW too due to SOS despite not winning the conference. Part of that was the relatively comfortable early season win at Oklahoma. So winning a tough OOC can benefit you too.

In related news, OSU announced they will play September 7, 2024 at Husky Stadium in Seattle. The Huskys will  return that game with a  contest on September 13, 2025 in Ohio Stadium.

They also announced a game with TCU that will take place at AT&T stadium, Dallas on September 15, 2018.
