Silver Lining: No Early NBA departures?

Submitted by Bones032 on
I needed to find a silver lining after that heartbreaker.Wilson and Wagner are not leaving for the NBA after that game. Wagner was considered the better prospect and he couldn't even get on the floor in the 2nd half, he's way too inconsistent right now for the NBA. Just look at this tournament, first game he was nearly invisible, 2nd game he looked like a lottery pick and then invisible again today. Wilson shot the three really well today, but he doesn't finish around the rim like the NBA would hope for. He's a great shot blocker but his one on one defense is very poor sometimes. Don't think there is anyway either would be drafted in the first round this year. Hell of a season though, super bummed it's over, such a funny team and season.

It does not matter if they are "not physically ready" or "too inconsistent" for the NBA. Their potential is what matters to the NBA. You will also develop much faster playing against NBA players. Wilson/Wagner may not be lottery picks but It's pretty clear that both would get drafted somewhere between the late first round and early second round.

The question we should be asking is whether either wants to return for another year.

Being a 1st round pick and a 2nd is a massive difference.  Cbs top 70 players today also had neither player listed.  People who think they are gone are only looking at the projections that suit their narative.

Being a first-round pick is winning a lottery ticket.

Being a second-round pick is almost worthless. It is basically equivalent to a roster try-out.  Which isn't TOTALLY worthless if you go in there and set the world on fire, but that takes a lot of doing.

Second round contracts are not guaranteed, meaning the players can be cut at any time, even before the season starts.  So they may get very little money, possibly almost nothing.  .  Even the LAST pick in the 1st round gets a minimum of around 2.4-2.5 million.

How do you know? Wagner didn't look very happy after being benched for most of the second half for no reason. Maybe he was hurt, if he wasn't though it was bad coaching again. Don't get me wrong, it was a great year. Just sad to fall again when we were probably the better team.

That we don't know for sure, but Mo was benched because he couldn't defend the Oregon "bigs" and wasn't offsetting that with offense. He is very streaky or just matchup dependent on offense.

DJ and Zac did well on D at the 4-5. Unfortunately Robinson is as much a liability on D against such athletic teams. (To be fair I think it has improved a lot this year but probably will never be a strong point.)

I'd bet both will be back next year and if we can get progress from Simpson we should be seeded 3-5-ish in next year's tourney

He couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.  And if that was because he was hurt, then even more reason to sit him.  And he was a complete liability on defense with Bell killing him.  We were down four when he went out and regained the lead without him.  Just like at the end of the Purdue, Wisconsin and OSU games, we were better without him.  He just can't play against small ball outfits unless he's hitting all his shots.

Perhaps not being able to take advantage of his size around the rim, being ice cold from long range, and carelessly turning the ball over had something to do with it? Or maybe Beilein just did it "for no reason."

He's a streaky player and was off tonight. He played 25 minutes and never got much of anything going.

An NBA evaluation isn't based on one game... There's a full body of work called a "season" that will determine where they stand. Think Wagner still has some developing to do but Wilson could go if he hears the right info...

but imho, I really think they would both benefit with another year of college ball.  Just seems way too early for them to turn pro, though I see thim being pros with more development and consistency

Also could not agree more Mike in A2.  Derrick Walton was terrific and as you said an absolute stud and the "truth".  I miss him already  but was so glad I got to watch him play the way he did this year.  DW really impressed me.  I became very fond of his game and his leadership this year, and will always remember his fantastic senior year and career at Michigan.

Ha thats exactly what I thought once the game ended.

Crazy draft experts were ready to annojnt wagner a top 20 draft grade off of one single game in the tourney

If Wilson and Wagner stay and work hard in the off season then I have no doubt they could both be top20 picks. Maybe even top 10 if they improve enough

Man, this is cruel. They just lost a hard-fought game against an opponent that had them on their heels all night. There's no reason to be such a dick about any of them right now.

Wagner stays unless he goes back to Germany. Wilson is 50-50, he needs to be more aggressive against athletic players. He gets timid sometimes.
