Great OT Thread

Need to get more details before we can make some of these assumptions, but the possibilities are endless. In Film, TV and Sports. I’m sure ESPN is salivating at the thought of gaining control of BTN.

As for the local Fox Sports stations, specifically Detroit, I’ve heard something else is in the works. Arn Tellem, current Vice Chairman of the Pistons, was brought to Detroit to focus on two things:

1) Bridge the gap with the Ilitch family to open up the possibility of the Pistons moving downtown. (He succeeded)

2) Develop a new local all-Detroit sports station, with compelling content and larger commitments from all the teams.

It would be similar to MSG in the New York area. More content from all of the Detroit teams, 24/7. Similar to FSD, without the Fox affiliate programming (bass fishing, low level boxing and UFC, poker, super cross etc.)

2 goals and 3 assists in 19 games.

That’s a big enough sample to see what he offers. While it is early to give up on him, you know a lot about prospects at that stage. Kyle Connor (one of our guys) in Winnipeg and Matthew Barzal of the Islanders are comparable players to him. Both taken a few picks before. Look at their numbers this year, in the NHL.

Trust me when I tell you, they likely don’t have much in Svech. Not a future top 6 forward, which is what they needed in that slot.

Agreed.

Would leave Steve nothing left to accomplish down there, and maybe lead to him want a new challenge. He no longer maintains a home down there, and still spends a majority of his time in Bloomfield and Muskola, Ontario.

That was not an easy read

But your points are not lost. In regards to giving kids from GR time: none of the names you named, other than Bertuzzi, have a spot on the main roster due to over signing. And none of them would really help, with one exception (you didn’t name him), Joe Hicketts. Hicketts would instantly be better than any defenseman on the roster not named Mike Green. One of Holland’s worst traits over the last three years, when it’s been most crucial, is his inability to draft. Svechnikov may be a bust. Check his GR numbers right now. Not good for a first rounder over 20 years old. Dennis Cholowski (1st rd 2016) is coming along, but he’ll never be the type of player that you draft in round 1. Michael Rasmussen (1st round 2017) is having a decent season in the WHL, but he didn’t get invited to Canada’s WJC team. That’s why this team is where it is. There is no talent in the pipeline when they need immediate help.

The best (or worst) part about all this? The team isn’t even at rock bottom yet. Goes back to the rebuild on the fly thing. They need to sell off as many assets as possible, so long as they can get assets back for them. Tatar, Nyquist, Green and even Zetterberg. The goalies would have been easy to move a few weeks ago, Mrazek was even mentioned as an option for Edmonton last night by Elliote Friedman on Hockey Night in Canada. And Jimmy Howard had a great start to the year. But he’s been absurdly bad of late, coming off 4 goals on 8 shots yesterday.

They need to pick high in this upcoming draft, which may be better than the 2015 (McDavid) and 2016 (Matthews) drafts. Baby Lidstrom will go first, his name is Rasmus Dahlin and he’s considered a better D prospect than Oliver Ekman-Larson, Victor Hedman and Erik Karlsson. Swedish scouts literally compare his offensive prowess to Lidstrom. He can change a franchise. The best forward happens to be Svechnikov’s younger brother Andrei, who plays for the OHL’s Barrie Colts. He’s a dazzler that can score. Just about as good of a forward prospect as any of the current best forwards in the NHL were at 17. Keith Tkachuk’s younger son Brady, who plays at BU, rounds out the top three.

The Wings need to get one of those kids. But don’t expect Ken Holland do get them there. As for Steve Yzerman, look at the top of the NHL standings. Would you leave Tampa, knowing you built a team that’s going to compete for years? I wouldn’t. Not for the Wings dumpster fire. Holland has shown no sign he’s stepping aside. And Yzerman has had issues with the Ilitch kids in the past. I doubt he leaves Tampa, at least right now.

As a proud Woods/Shores Alum.

Go Michigan. They took care of a powerhouse Hamilton, Ohio team yesterday. Think they'll do Michigan proud.

You and I may be in the minority

But I, too, preferred the home and home with the middle of the pack SEC school, as opposed to ND. Been there 3 times and still haven't found anything special about it. Except, of course, when Denard lit them up in 2010. That was special.

What does everyone else think? For 2018, would you rather have ND or The Woo Bielema Sooies? Disregard what year Michigan will be playing at home. Revive ND, or Arkansas?

Comical

Since every sports fan base in history doesn't root for him. Hence the fact that his HBO show (is it even on the air?) is going poorly.

Interesting hearing from a Seattle Resident

But I think you're in the minority. Totally agree on avoiding public funding whenever possible. But people have been demanding the Sonics back since they left. I think of one league lands, the other will as well. And that will only help the case for a new/renovated building.

The Key Arena renovation seems likely

Backed by AEG, the group the built T-Mobile arena in Vegas. The competing bidders just backed out, so it's now a one horse race. Question is, will the NHL settle for a renovated building? Or do they want new digs. The same can be said for the NBA. The NHL and NBA will go together like Harbaugh and Bo when it comes to Seattle. So when one league likes something, the other will follow suit.

KC is interesting

But unlikely, IMO. But they have all the makings. Missouri is a hockey state. St. Louis had how many drafted players last year? A ton in the first round alone. And more this year. KC also has a newer building that can support hockey. Think the expansion fee would be too high for the market, but KC could work.

The Canucks will deal with another team

When they get their share of the relocation fee. Same could be said for the Coyotes/Kings with Vegas coming in. They made it work and re-drew the markets.

As for lack of youth hockey in Seattle, that's not true. Not as strong of a base as other markets, but Seattle has their own CHL team in the WHL's Seattle Thunderbirds. One of four WHL teams in Washington, alone. The whole state of Washington would benefit from having an NHL Franchise.

Seattle for Expansion, QC for Relocation

The NHL declined Quebec City for expansion last year due in large part to the fact that they want the next expansion franchise to end up out west. The NHL is eyeing Seattle as that city. This is due to many things, which indlude: not wanting to add another team in the east and unbalance the west, using Silicon Valley/Seattle tech money for the $500-million expansion fee, a strong hockey fanbase in the northeast and the possibility of a joint NBA/NHL venue for Seattle. Seattle has had trouble coming up with locations and funding for a brand new building, but two new proposals for massive renovations are in the works for Key Arena in downtown Seattle (the former home of the Sonics). It would likely attract both an NBA and NHL franchise.

Quebec City is primed for a relocation franchise. In order of most likely- it would be one of the Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers or New York Islanders. Slim to none on the Islanders, especially since there's a good chance they move to Queens in the near furutre. Too much history in the NYC area. But The Canes have had ownership issues with Detroit native Peter Karmanos and his children. Wouldn't shock me if that family moves that team for a second time (the Canes were once the Hartford Whalers).

QC didn't get an expansion franchise because of the faulty Canadian dollar. The previously mentioned expansion fee is quite high, but a relocation fee is reportedly only $200-million. My guess is at some point in the next 2-5 years, Seattle gets an expansion team and QC gets a relocated team. QC's fate will be cleared when the Karmanos family figures out what their deal is, and Seattle's fate comes down to that Key Arena renovation.

You have GREAT questions

Some of them I can't really answer off the top of my head since I'm on my phone. But I'll do my best:

1) I'll get negged for this, but I'm of the opinion Hockey East is by far the best hockey conference in division one. Boston College and Boston Unversity are arguably the two most storied programs in college hockey. Recent NHL names include Jack Eichel (BU) and Johnnu Gaudreau (BC) amongst a ton of others all time.

Next for me is the relatively new NCHC. The two most recent national champions, Denver and North Dakota, play in this conference. Western Michigan is here as well.

B1G comes in third for me, but it's on the rise. Michigan should be back soon. Minnesota has the strongest college hockey program in the state of hockey, and Wisconsin is also solid. Notre Dame is joining the conference for this upcoming season.

2) Usually it takes north of 20 wins to get into the field of 16, but don't quote me on that. And those wins better be strong wins. Similar to college football.

3) When Pittsburgh won the cup the other night, I saw a great image of and outline of the cup with all of the Penguins that played college hockey. There are more college hockey players than ever before in the NHL. College hockey has become a great feeder of top end talent to the NHL.

4) Michigan will be improved this season, but it will still be a rebuild type of year. Helps to have his like Will Lockwood and Jack LaFontaine to build around. Mel Pearson is the reason for a lot of the success the program had over the last few decades, and he'll get this ship in the right direction.

5) This answer won't help, but I like to gauge how talented North American guys are by seeing who owns their CHL rights and where those teams value them. The CHL is Canadian Major Junior Hockey. Those guys are the best compatibles for college hockey players. If I see a college hockey player was drafted high in the OHL, WHL or QMJHL, I know that people who know talent value that player in a higher regard.

Again, if I was near a desktop with more research, you'd get much stronger answers. But someone else on here will handle that.

On absolute thing I can tell you for certain, Yost is very special and THE BEST venue in college hockey. Enjoy every second of it. Most of Nashville's chants their fans got tons of credit for are actually Michigan Hockey chants. You'll be immersed in those soon enough. Enjoy!

Ordered one this week

I'm in a wedding where we're using Snapsuits. I just ordered mine this week, so I'm not sure about the quality or the success of the process.

But if it costs between $100-$200 to rent a suit for a wedding, why not purchase one from some Michigan Grads for $250?

Have you ever listened to the show?

Seems like you haven't, or you're just not a Barstool fan (which I can understand, I'm not a stoolie). The PMT guys are arguably the best sports interviewers out there right now. Apple even had PMT in their Top Podcasts of 2016, the ONLY sports podcast to make the list. I think they have more than a cult following.

They're known for getting guests out of their comfort zone, leading to great answers to questions that don't typically get asked. Listen to their recent interviews with Bob Huggins, Theo Epstein and Kareem Abdul Jabbar. Graham Glasgow will likely be on this week as well, as he was part of their interview with TJ Lang for #GritWeek17.

They're the perfect guys to interview Harbaugh. It should be hilarious. And it gives Harbaugh another opportunity to appeal to college kids and recruits, something he has been very good at for the last three years. Going on PMT is a no-brainer for him. And if anyone is against Harbaugh participating in anything stool related: too late.

Spartans Will

Gimme that Memorial Day weekend news dump.

Listen to the experts

So I don't have to hear the name "Miles Bridges" until next year's draft. Michigan would have to be preseason B1G favorites if they both return, no?

Brady coming back for last year of eligibility

Prepare Pizza House for arrival.

Pardon My Take

From Barstool Sports. Only "sports" podcast in Apple's best podcasts of 2016. Highly entertaining and always good guests.

Waste of my time.

Didn't know mock drafts 12 months out were actually scrolled through.

He'll miss Zion Williamson by a year

But Mark can keep his seat warm for him. Best of luck to him.

This is good.

Jedd Fisch will make a terrible division 1 hockey coach.

Bucci is typically right...

Good hire. And Bucci mentioned a few days back to expect John Madden on the staff. Going to be interesting to see how the rest of the staff fills out, but I'm pumped.

The Replacement Won't Have A Soul

They'll end up getting a spineless sap that Valenti can walk all over. The show will go more off the rails than ever. Giving Valenti autonomous power is a bad idea.

Dery Return Unlikely

Don't get your hopes up. He'd return to radio in the right situation, but it definitely won't be 97.1. Don't think he would compliment Valenti well, either.

Agreed

Not worth the neg. This is a great share. Optimism in this class for sure.

I don't endorse cruel and unusual punishment...

But it's hard not to when stuff like this happens to good people that deserve a break more than anything else. Hope they catch the suspects and they're prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Compared To Anastos

Great hire for Sparty. Credentials much stronger than CCHA Prez. He'll be much more knowledgable about kids from across the board, hard part comes when having to sell the program.

As for Red, sounds like we may get an answer today. According to reports from the Wings game last night (Red was in attenadance), he's already talked to Warde. Doesn't sound promising for those in the anti-Red camp.

I apologize for not being able to embed. I'm on the app.

Interview on the Dan Dakich show

Crean was excellent. Was only supposed to be a 10-15 minute interview, Crean went for 45. Really compelling. I honestly couldn't stop listening. Had a lot of real things to say. Complimented M basketball and the Harbaugh's, both unprompted. Highly reccconend. I'll try and find the link.

Unfortunately

An NBA evaluation isn't based on one game... There's a full body of work called a "season" that will determine where they stand. Think Wagner still has some developing to do but Wilson could go if he hears the right info...

Suck it Sparty

In all honestly, I've seen both Tillman and Livers play and I truly believe Isaiah is better. But this is still juicy.

Nordin

Will probably boot a 65 yarder against the wind.

L4MSU

And the "L" doesn't stand for "loss," it stands for "lack of institutional control."

My chest.

Is throbbing.

RCMB Research

I've frquented RCMB this week for obvous reasons. Someone just had a recent post saying that we won't be shocked (at least their fanbase) when we find out who it is.

Anyone have any idea about who on their staff would be involved in somehting like this?

FWIW... I was a call screen

FWIW... I was a call screen at Detroit Sports 105.1 from a year ago now until their demise (RIP). This kid named Troy (I think he was from somewhere downriver if I remember correctly) would always call in to try and ask Lindsey Hunter about taking one of the vacant Michigan assistant jobs. When I would turn him down, we'd talk football for a couple minutes. Claimed he was LTT's cousin and LTT had a really good relationship with the staff. Was trying to get back on the team as soon as last year, pending all of his legal/academic hurdles were cleared.

Take that for what you will. I know it's a consider the source type of thing. But if we ever find out LTT has a cousin named Troy from downriver...

Chuck

Anyone know what time Chuck Filiaga is announcing? Will they punish Michigan fans by making us wait until the fourth quarter?

He has the "Block M" Tattooed on his Pelvis

Right across from the Olympic Rings... Pretty sure if he identifies with Michigan more than any other school.
