MSU band director investigated for sexual harrassment
Boy, when it rains, it pours.
"Pics of your dress are required … Discreetly of course,” John T. Madden, the director of the Spartan Marching Band, wrote in a text message to an MSU student on Feb. 20, 2016 at about 10:42 p.m. This information was found in documents obtained by The State News. The documents were given to The State News from a victim of sexual harassment.

Me too. My actual thought was, "This can't be real." Wow.

I have a feeling all this is related to the doctor scandal. They know a shit storm of bad publicity and scrutiny are headed their way and want to get in front of it. If they catch even a whiff of something that could be sexual assault, they're going to take it seriously so they don't look like they have a culture of letting stuff slide.

Can someone get me up to speed on this doctor that people keep mentioning?

Was the world always this weird, or do we just hear more about it now?

Exactly. I'm not Pangloss, but I think the trend is pretty darn good.

I see your point, and it's a good one. The advances in technology have made evidentiary risks higher for the perp, yet that does not seem to slow many of them down.
At the same time, they have increased the range of the field of prey.

If I was in HS today I would likely be on probation for something. My common sense went bye-bye from 15-19 years old.

When "send me pictures of a dress" can get you fired, people back then would have never stood a chance.
I used to work in a 24 hour diner in the late '70s . . . the stuff that passed for "normal" day-to-day interaction that passed without any comments, would singe your ears today.
Every single manager would have been fired within one day.

Back in the 70s at John Glenn HS in Westland, I was in the marching band. One day as we were rehearsing in the band room, in walks a parent who points to the band director and says, "Outside...NOW!" The band director walked out... and never returned! A few days later we found out he had been fired for having knocked up the first chair clarinet player.

I wonder if the people who downvoted you thought you were making a joke.
(For the record, Lloyd was the coach there from 1973-76.)
February 9th, 2017 at 8:22 PM ^
No, apparently Lloyd Carr arrived at JGHS the year after I graduated ('75). When I was there, we had a great band but our football team sucked, we were lucky to win one or two games each year. But I hear that Carr immediately made us competitive and started winning league titles within a few years.
February 9th, 2017 at 8:29 PM ^
If you graduated in '75, then Lloyd was, in fact, your school's coach for part of that time. Per MGoBlue he was at John Glenn from 1973-75. (Scroll down to the bottom of the article.)

OP was 70's. It happened in the late 90's at my high school. No pregnancy though.

I am sensing a trend.

It would have been very embarassing to knock up a lower echelon musician

This is why I hate that the term sexual assault covers such a wide spectrum. It's all wrong, but there's a huge difference between this and forcible rape.
So this band guy asked for a picture of an adult, 22 year old college senior in her dress, she sent him requested pic, then he texts back to apologize because it was an innappropriate request. Band guy gets suspended.
Sure it's creepy as hell and highly innappropriate, but I'll wait for anymore facts to come out before making further judgement
February 9th, 2017 at 7:57 PM ^
I'm assuming your avatar is what a 22yr old college senior might look like?
February 9th, 2017 at 8:10 PM ^
Umm yeah. She was a senior in 2013. What does that have to do with anything?
February 9th, 2017 at 9:20 PM ^
And your avatar is what a creepy band director might look like?
February 9th, 2017 at 8:15 PM ^
Well the title of the article refers to sexual "harassment" not "assault". I have no legal expertise on the matter, but it seems like "harassment" is usually used to describe crimes of a verbal nature, while "assault" is used specifically for physical crimes.
February 10th, 2017 at 11:15 AM ^
Except this is clearly being portrayed not as a "sexual assault," but sexual harassment.

Where did that band director think he was, Ohio State?
