Georgia becoming threat to M for Nico Collins: and what is up with Georgia?

Submitted by wolverine1987 on

Small note from 24/7 that Georgia is challenging late for Nico Collins. But my larger question is, WTF is up with Georgia? They are recruiting at gangbuster levels with Smart this year, rated ahead of our class and in contention for more high level recruits--was Smart known as a great recruiter at Bama or is it someone else on the staff?

He may be realizing he is the likely the 3rd or 4th best WR in this class. I hope we still get him but I have a feeling DPJ and Tarik are going to have the best careers for WR we have seen in the winged helmet in some time.

Do people not realize georgia always recruits well? Georgia has the 6th most players in the nfl with 36 (bama is in first with 43) and since 2010 they have finished in the top 10 in recruiting all but twice and the other two years they were 11th and 12th.

Georgia has always recruited well and now they have the added bumb of a new coach that was a former player and also has multiple championship rings.  This isn't surprising.  Georgia may underperform on the field but recruiting isn't their issue.

It's a combination of two things:

1. Georgia is a destination school. From everything I've heard about Athens and the University of Georgia, it's awesome. That's a big draw.

2. Questionable coach+desperate/hungry (not to mention large and wealthy) fanbase that is consistently failing to live up to expectations=$$$$$ to recruits. It is the Hugh Freeze formula.

Personally I think there needs to be an NCAA investigation done on Georgia recruiting this year. I have a hard time believing they can go 7-5 but then land a historic class such as this that is continuing to grow.

At the end of the day though the NCAA cares about whats good for the NCAA and Im sure a strong Georgia vs Alabama match up is something they would like

You guys are acting like there isn't a new coach in his first full recruiting cycle there in an absurdly talent rich state.

Smart coached in the championship game last year, he got a later start on recruiting his first class than Harbaugh did.  He also has the benefit of 13 in state recruits being in the top 150.  None of this is surprising.

would result in the same findings they decided on at LSU under an internal invesigation headed by Chancellor Emmert at that time. Yes, the allegations were true, as attested to by numerous employees of the institution. As Emmert does whenever there is an allegation at Bama, he assumes control over same and after an appropriate amount of time concludes insufficient evidence to warrant punishment. Smart is fully aware of what transpires at Bama and I cannot fault him for using the same carrot in recruiting. Many young men simply prefer not to attend school, and if it is policy that it is optional - take advantage of it if you wish, but we certainly won't force anything on you not directly beneficial to the program - then hell yes, that what he is doing with full knowledge that Emmert is not going to commit professional suicide by excusing one and finding fault with the other of two almost identical programs.

It's obvious this is why GA has catapulted to the top three in recruiting circles and in that talent rich state, it should become an annual occurence. Richt simply refused to participate in such a scenario and as he did, he fully expected and demanded his players go to school and participate in football as well. When you have the option to offer such a sweet, sweet package - and is actually the reason you were hired - there are countless coaches out there that will take the cool 5 mil per annum(I would). Now as we have witnessed at both FL and Bama, there are pitfalls in this model but obviously not to the degree that it would ever be deemed necessary to revert to the old practice of a  combination of education and a member of a pround football program. Those days are long gone in not only the SEC but within the walls of the BIG East itself. Expect them to stay; in fact get use to it.

If Nico Collins decides not to come to Michigan....that is a lot of travel dollars on unofficial visits "wasted". But whomever is in the class....great, welcome to family. Whomever decides to go elsewhere....Good luck...is what it is.

An SEC school suddenly starts recruiting like gangbusters. We've been down this road before. Now that a Saban protégé is coaching Georgia, it shouldn't really be surprising.

You know it's like that old parable about the farmer your parents taught you.  You guys know the one - where the farmer drinks his milk at sunrise and goes about his business in the cold and blustery far north in an efficient and charming manner day after day.  But he notices at the southern edge of his farm these 3 turkeys.  These turkeys are easy to pick out - they all have a lot of red hue to their feathers...well one is orange-y but reddish in general. These turkeys like to run on his land whenever the farmer turns his back and peck away at his crops...crops that don't belong to them.  They 3 fowl are worst type of turkey - the nefarious kind.  They don't go and act like normal turkeys and go put in the work for their own food...no, folks these are real peckers. All the farmer can do is work harder and stare from afar because this is his lot in his life and mutter under his breath "jive turkeys".   Oh it gets worse folks, the farmer thought he only had 3 jive turkeys in his life but alas, one day he notices all the thievery has caught the attention of yet another obnoxious red fowl.... a real smarty pants this one who seems to have made his home along the hedges across his property line.  A 4th jive turkey.  A real clucker this one.

Wow, that's an impressive amount of stupidity AND racism right there. How about you crawl back under whatever rock you came out from under and just call it a life.

I've had a lot of quality communication with Alabama alumns during my time in the south the past couple years. They convince me it's just that the "bottom tier" of their fanbase is really, really bad. Like this fine Chap, for instance.
