OT: Random M Alum/Fan Encounters

Submitted by Lan Jiao on
Had an interesting and unexpected M encounter on Monday. Was on The Great Wall in windy, 35-degree weather with only a scattering of fellow morons to be seen. I'd just about reached the day's objective; a guard tower at the crest of a hill with a steep series of treacherously-narrow steps leading to it....and dude pops out of the tower with that ubiquitous maize 'M' on his forehead. I ripped open my ski jacket to show him the same 'M' on my chest, and we shared a few stories, Goldfish crackers (should have been cereal), and a 'Go Blue!' before receiving the 'LezzzzgoI'mCold' look from our wives. What's your best/most random/most fun M meetup/encounter? Cheers from The Orient. Eggs Benny are on the menu for the OB if you're in Guangzhou Saturday morning. Go Blue.

A few years ago I took my family on a vacation to Great Britain. Walking in front of Westminster Abbey wearing a Michigan shirt I saw a guy with an OSU shirt approaching in the opposite direction. As we passed he said, "you suck". No surprise.

I am disappointed at the number of times I have seen people in Michigan gear here in Athens (often) and gotten silence or weird looks when I "Go Blue!" them....so strange. Why wear the gear if you aren't that into it? Shrug.

I used to travel a lot and saw a lot of folks wearing the wonderful block M caps in airports....everywhere in the states and a few in Europe.... Of course, being the asshole fan that I am, I always lob a loud "Go Blue" and most of the time the hat wearers don't get it. Why the cap? WTF?

on the island of Bora Bora. my new wife and I were hanging out by the pool and started making conversation with a few other honeymooning couples. one of them graduated the same year as me from Michigan, same major, and we were in a couple classes together, although we didn't know each other. shared a few good stories about certain professors. another guy graduated a couple of years after us and had a Michigan themed wedding. we all ended up going out to Bloody Mary's bar that night. good times.

One a day bunch of Vory were kicking my ass, and I noticed that one of them had a block M tattoo on his calf. I asked if he went to Michigan. He said,"Yes, I go to Michigan! You like Wolverines?!" I told him I was a fan, and - after the ass kicking - we became pretty good friends. We moved a lot of cigarettes, my friend and I did.

I was with a tour in China and we stayed at the same hotel as the Alumni Assn wa-a-ay back in the 80's.  One day, our tour was at the Great Wall.  Our group started getting our cameras out and trying to figure out how to get a group shot.  A young woman offered to take pix with each of our cameras.  When I reached for my camera, she noticed my alumnae watch and gave me a hearty "Go Blue".  The other tour members were very impressed!

Bought a copy of NCAA Football next to Junior Hemingway once down at the Game Stop near the mall. Wasn't sure it was him and he put his wallet on the counter to take out his credit card. It was him. Gave him a Go Blue and he replied in kind.

I had lived in Arizona for 5 years and got used to getting excited and yelling go blue whenever I saw a stranger wearing U of M gear or a Michigan license plate. When I moved back to Ann Arbor, it took a few months to snap out of it and not be so giddy when I saw something/someone U of M related. I'm sure I weirded out a few people forgetting that U of M paraphenilia isn't rare in the place where U of M is.

I was heading into a beach area on the Dead Sea in the West Bank, and as I was walking in the entrance, a guy in a Michigan shirt was walking out. Exchanged a Go Blue and such. Definitely the farthest-flung place I've ran into one of our own.

I ran into Michigan alums in Switzerland, Germany and Italy all on the same trip (different people each time, I should mention, lol). And also another one on a different trip to Sweden.

and noticed a tall, curvy

cheerleader type with long blonde

hair and wearing nothing but

hot pink lipstick.  He had a

huge dick, but his girlfriend had

a tatoo of a Wolverine next to

her beaver.

I said, " Go Blue !!! ",  but they

ignored me.

late in undergrad, I ran into Mark Messner vacationing on Spring Break. Shook his hand and exchanged brief pleasantries. Nice guy, glad he didn't pancake me.

Great looking guy though....

February earlier this year I had just boarded a flight from LAX to San Jose after getting in from Shanghai. After I sat down a woman who was boarding saw my M hat and said "Go Blue" as she walked by. Still a little disoriented from the previous flight, I said a delayed "Go Blue" back to her and then turned back around only to see a monstrous human being looking down at me smiling. It was Rashan Gary. Given that it was Super Bowl weekend I can only assume Rashan and his Mom were heading to Santa Clara for the big game.

the experience of meeting a Buckeye out of nowhere. The wife and I took a cruise in the Gulf of Mexico and it was February 3rd, the night of Super Bowl XLII. They were going to show it in one of the bars onboard so the wife and I went down there. I had on a gray Michigan tee; we weren't there but a few minutes before this guy comes up all excited to introduce himself. There was that split second when I thought he was going to introduce himself as a fellow Wolverine but he blurts out that he's a Buckeye like we're long lost soulmates or something. I wanted to say, "Dude, your doing it wrong" but I was polite and waited for him to move along but he never did. I made the best of it and listened to him go from diehard Buckeye to grudging admiration for the maize and blue as the night and the drinks wore on. Oddly, I didn't have any grudging admiration for the Buckeyes at anytime during the night. We ended up watching the Super Bowl together and buying one another drinks, it turned out to be okay.

It is funny sometimes how people react or fail to do so! If you are wearing the gear and hear someone yell out "GO BLUE!" It is party time! We are everywhere! I am a proud Wolverine fan! Not shy and tell Bucky fans that I hate them (and it is always in good fun). What's a rivalry for . . .

Me and a buddy did a Europe trip after graduating a few years back.  We take a ridiculous train ride from Barcelona to Munich. Exhausted, we check into our hostel pretty early in the day, take a quick nap and then head out in the late afternoon.

Before going back out for the night, we head back to the hostel and it turns out we're splitting a room with two other Michigan students/alums.  We all go out together, eventually heading to Hofbrauhaus.

As some point in our increasingly inhebriated state we order another round of liters of beer and when there's a lull in the music, start up The Victors as loud as we can. Everyone in the place loves it - even if they don't understand it or know what we're saying - and are banging their beers on the wooden tables.

It was one of those few "this actually happens in real life and not just in movies" kinda things.  Too fun.

My interesting encounter was before I enrolled in Michigan at a high school football game, playing Brandon Gibbens. He makes a perfect form tackle on the ground. Gets as close to my face as possible, right up at my face guard... and is telling me "We're going to Michigan, were going to Michigan! Right in my face, played for the other team. Like a Key and Peel episode.
