Week 8: Best thing you saw...

Submitted by mi93 on

Well...

I LOVE SPORTSBALL!

More pretenders eliminated this week.  Fleck's Broncos keep rolling.  Big win for the fighting Durkins.

So, if you'd asked me at 7pm, I would have said Darboh's catch in traffic, and the throw into traffic by Speight.  Or the INT by Thomas.  Or being incredibly focused in a should-win game the week before a must-win rivalry game.  Probably the latter.

Mike Legg's Score-O goal from Friday (saw it today) is also a legit contestant this week.

A half hour ago, I would have said either Leonard Fournette (presently 254 yards on 12 carries through 3 quarters - 12 CARRIES) or the Cubs winning the pennant for the first time in 71 years (wasn't sure I'd ever see it happen and it deserves being the best thing).

But...there's a reason I didn't start typing this until zeros in Happy Valley.  It needed to be the best thing I saw before I could say I saw it.  Seeing a 20-point dog beat the #2 team was the best thing I saw.

As an added bonus, now we've seen how the Buckeye O can be slowed/stopped, we've seen how their D can be beat, and we've seen that special teams can be beat.  And we have Harbaugh and staff to exploit it all even more in November. Until then, win and advance.

What you got?

I'll throw in a couple more not touched on very much yet:

 - Higdon looked outstanding today.  I thought this before his long TD run.  He just looks to have something extra the others don't.  Great vision, very shifty and an extra gear. Hope the trend continues on as this kid can play.

- How about SMU crushing Houston 38-16 and Colorado winning at Stanford 10-5.

Perhaps, but Colorado continues to win and continues to put themselves in position to play in the Pac-12 title game.  And don't forget a few weeks ago where the voters dinged us a bit because of our Colorado game.  Stanford is down this year for sure, but they are not Illinois, Purdue, Rutgers, etc.  Still a good road win for the Buffs.

Apart from all the obvious ones, I particularly enjoyed Dymonte Thomas' intercepting a screen pass. I believe that came right after Illinois had forced M to punt for the first time and basically said, "If you think you are getting back into this game, the answer is NO." Plus it was his first career INT so good for Dymonte.

in the first half, Speight's accuracy yesterday, the TD the Tyrone Wheatley Jr., Karan Higdon going for over 100 yds. on 6 carries and his fabulous long touchdown run, McCray coming back on the field, and Evans walking off the field on his own power after a vicious helmet to side of his helmet hit, then head hitting turf play that was clearly targeting to anyone paying attention, and the team becoming 7 & 0 .

The best thing I saw was a Michigan win that was dominant. I don't mind vanilla offense in the second half when you're rolling.
Second best thing was the CUBS going to the World Series. Amazing.
Beat State.

Some people will complain that we took our foot off the gas in the second half, and that's fine by me. The game was well in hand, and you're the #3 (now #2) team in America. You don't need to go for style points. But what did I like from our game:

-Defense was an unstoppable freight train, per the usual.
-Speight looked very good yesterday, and threw into some very tight windows. Quality of competition and all that, but still, I liked what I saw.
-Running game looked very good against a pretty decent Illinois DL.
-Love seeing the train formation again.

Outside our game:
-Sparty loses 5 in a row. Here's to making it six next weekend. I'm still of the mindset though that we're going to see a very different MSU team next week. They're going to play their best game.
-OSU loses to a team that we beat 49-10. We're moving up to #2 today, and they probably drop to 5-6.
-Glad to see Wisconsin get past any emotional hangover while they beat Iowa.
-Cubbies making it back to the Fall Classic for the first time since WWII. Not a huge baseball fan anymore, but those are great moments in sports.
