That weird Shane Morris run block package?

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Surprised this hasn't been talked about but not really since it was the beginning of the game.

So. Just what WAS that? Because that play happened on our first offensive series, I believe.

I'm referring to the play where Shane Morris came in and it was a toss sweep to the left with Peppers running the ball and Morris acting as a run blocker.

Something we could see in the future?

Peppers is gone if Kalis and Morris hit their blocks.

Surprised no one has mentioned this yet but it looked very Stanford-like.  Idk if Jim ran this while he was there but from watching a few Stanford games last year they definitely ran this play multiple times that I saw where Kevin Hogan would pitch it then turn and be a lead blocker.

O'Korn came in early in the game as well with Khalid Hill as the RB and Asiasi as the FB. I turned to the people sitting next to me and said that we were "out-scheming" ourselves.

Was at the game on Saturday and noticed a tall, fairly thin guy wearing #97 with Johnson on the nameplate.  I've not heard anything about Shelton Johnson being reinstated but don't know who else it could be.

Defintely wans't Drake or Nate based on height and don't think it was Ron though it's been hard to keep up with all the number changes.  Any thoughts appreciated!

It would be fun to see Morris split out wide with this package, then motion into the backfield and pause in shotgun, then motion to the other side of the field. It may not do anything but I just want to see how the defense would align, especially if it was man coverage.

Like others, I think that was put on film specifically to make Big Ten DCs guess at what might come out of that set (probably a fair amount of wildcat / options looks), and I would be willing to be we see versions of it here and there starting next week, particularly in situations where we need some yards here and there or to just give an opponent another dimension of the offense to worry about.

A lot of stuff like this is used to set up certain personnel groups rather than formations. So Morris and Peppers on the field is a known possibility. It's possible they run the same play again, and it's possible that the same guys come out and do something completely different.

Flea flicker or throwback. That Morris package is available for both and you gotta prep for them now as a defense. Also, when do we see the chesson-mcdoom double reverse??

All this talk about packages and reverses and flea flickers. And, hey, look at that: Texas Tech ran a double-reverse flea flicker screen pass this weekend for a touchdown. I think Matt Hinton tweeted it, it's worth looking up. Because I could see Michigan pulling that out.

Nebraska ran that play with Martinez lead blocking for Burkhead a couple of times a game. I expect there are going to be some counter punches out of that look or even that play. One that comes to mind is Morris faking like he's going to block and running past the safeties freaking out about Peppers.

there on that play vs. someone else who could have done a much better blocking job.  Harbaugh is planning some other variations of that play most likely where Morris throws out of the formation.  There IS a possiblity too that he's doing that to screw around with our future opponents defensive coaches and their game planning for us.  We'll see I guess.

It's a package of plays where you're willing to risk the quarterback getting injured as both a runner and a blocker, but he's not going to take that risk as much as JT Barrett, for example. The defense is going to freak when Jabrill comes onto the field, so Morris is going to have an open recieiver sometimes. Morris can sling it, and just focusing on this package gives him a simpler set of pass reads and fewer decisions to make. I wonder if it's going to be an actual triple option

Don't forget the Peppers sweep/pass option they had last year. I would love to see all 3 QBs and Peppers on the field and we mix in some true single-wing package. Yar, 'twould be glorious, me hearties!

I think this is from the 1960's - 70's USC teams.  John McKay would run the "student body" play where the QB would continue down to block.  Now the QB typically carries out fake instead of being involved in the blocking.

One thing I haven't seen anyone mention yet: This was a staple of Bo's offense at one time. I remember watching some old Michigan tape and seeing a lot of of power-I off-guard and off-tackle runs where the QB would pitch it instead of handing off, and then be one of the blockers going through the hole. I seem to remember my coach telling me that the QB was responsible for the cutback lane on those plays.
