OT: Sports Riddles

Submitted by Gil From Omaha on

Well, with the CFB season about to start in the next 24 hours, I thought we could finish it off with some sports-related riddles. Here they are, and good luck!

1. I am going on a trip. I start in Ralston, NE and stay one night. Don't like it much. I then go to Pittsburgh. I don't like it that much. I travel to Tallahassee. I like it so much, I stay there 4 nights. Then, I decide to head back to Ralston. I finally end my trip in Salt Lake City. Where am I?

2. I am going on another trip. I start my vacation off right in Washington D.C. I spend 4 nights in Washington D.C. Then, I head to Lincoln, NE. Then I take a long journey to Valdez, AK. I stay in Valdez for 2 nights. I head back to the east coast where I party it up in Raleigh, NC. I stay in Raleigh for 3 nights. I go north to New York, where I stay 2 nights. FInally, I end my amazing trip in San Diego. Where am I?

3. Two baseball teams played a game. No man touched a base, but one team won. How is this possible?

4. My first is in Kendo, but not Olympics. My second is in hurdles and hunting. My third is in bowman and bowling. My fourth is in cycling and golf. My fifth is in flying, but not swimming. My sixth is in running, but not dancing. My whole is a sport. What am I?

5. 3 brothers were playing football when they kicked a threw a ball that broke their neighbor's window. The neighbor saw them run away, but didn't see who threw it. Their names were Sam Smith, Mark Smith, and Alan Smith. The next day, the neighbor received a note that said "? Smith". Who did it?

1 and 2.  Home - you said you were going on a trip, not that you were on the trip

3. Two options: (a) the game was played by women, not men or (b) one team forfeited

4. I got nothing.

5. Mark

Maybe there's two outs and the runner went on a long hit that hooked foul at the last second but he was already on third by the time it landed. so he'd have to go back to first. next pitch is a ground rule double, so it's a(o?)bsurd for him to now get back to 3rd? i don't know man. maybe it's weird wording and I'm just overanalyzing for the hell of it.

Ground rule triple is actually a real thing in baseball, but very rare. Has to do with players touching a live ball with part of their uniform (like catching the ball with their hat or the catchers mask. It's a two base penalty so on a single you go to third. However, people argue with the name ground rule triple because it's not a rule specific to the ballpark.

1. Raptors...so in Toronto 2. Wolverines...so in Ann Arbor (my friends and i used to love doing these as kids. took me a second to remember how to do them. great game to play on a long road trip). 3. I have a couple of guesses... They're all (or at least one of them is) girls? one team forfeited? 4. yeah I have no idea. wanna think it's similar to the first two but I spent enough time on those so now I'm all impatient. haha 5. Mark. as in question Mark Smith. I have a question for you, Gil: what's a sport played all around the world, that has four letters in it and starts with a T?

Yeesh, this will take a minute.

Edit:  Someone in the clubhouse went to Wendy's when they have their Triple Baconator going on?!!!

Double Edit:  I've got nothin'.  Somehow a trick question (did I nail it with the Wendy's answer?!)?  6 hits in an inning has to be all singles I feel like.

Triple, pick off at third. Triple, pick off at third. Double. Double but runner doesn't score. Second and third. Infield single and runners don't advance. With the bases loaded, the batter hits it on the infield and beats the throw to first. However, the runner on 3rd pulled his hamstring and collapses on his way home. He is tagged out for the final out.

With a man on 2nd, and another double is hit, that scores a run, correct?! And technically on your last scenario that would be a fielders choice. Now, regarding your last scenario again...and I think this does HAVE to happen in this riddle to make it work, a batted ball which hits a runner but would for sure have been considered a hit otherwise is scored as a hit. I still can't work it all out but, it's a scenario that can be utilized for this "problem".

you are correct. last ball hits a runner (doesn't matter which one) and no runners advance. it's considered a single but there's also 3 outs. as far as the second double, it's possible that the runner tripped, or got injured, or accidentally tagged on a ball that wasn't close to being caught, or even got faked out by some good acting by an outfielder (I believe this happened recently to....Cespedes? can't remember). Lots of options there.
