There's no evidence that this is a legitimate fear. Although I think we'd know by now if Kugler was destined to be a superstar, lots of offensive linemen have the light go on during their redshirt junior seasons.

I think Canteen's absence was no secret. Pallante's omission is a little more of a surprise, at least to me.
Canteen hasn't been on the roster for a while.

Lawrence Marshall at a much more playable weight of 268. Ty Isaac at 242 seems high
August 7th, 2016 at 10:47 AM ^
Drake Harris at 188 is also better. Though for a 6'4 guy he could play north of 200. I really hope he breaks out this year.
August 7th, 2016 at 11:00 AM ^
Harris will be no closer than the 5th receiver to see the field this fall. However, he's gonna get a good shot at being a starter next fall, so I hope he will be patient and capitalize on opportunities to get better in practice and scrap time this fall.
If he can get to 195 or 200 and be technically sound, we could be really mean on the edges next year with him and Mo.

Yeah but they are totally different players really. Funchess is that type of jumbo guy like Kelvin Benjamin, and Calvin Johnson (without that speed). That lack of top end speed makes him a great matchup and good jump ball guy, but not much of a vertical threat.
Harris has always been really fast for his height and he is built more like AJ Green. Real tall and super skinny, big time vertical threat. Green plays at 200 pounds and runs a 4.5 and I think those are both achievable measurables for Drake.

At 195 is a very good thing. He's one of predicted freshman receivers that will play this year.
That's just too think IME to see the field consistently. If he can just burn guys that's one thing, but I feel like physically he'll have a hard time getting off being jammed at the line, and he's going to be an outside threat more often than not, so it will be harder to free him up. What amazes me is that Malzone is 2 inches shorter than him and is almost 30 pounds heavier, and it's not like Malzone is considered a "big" QB.
I do hope Harris can see the field, but his continued inability to get bigger (to say nothing of lingering injuries) makes me question if that will be a reality.

Isaac is way up over his spring numbers. Could that have been planned? (commence freakout)
August 7th, 2016 at 11:02 AM ^
Isaac would be a really, really fun fullback (/ducks). I'm not sure he has the toughness based on what we saw last year, but if he does, he would be what we thought Shallman could be at the position, but on steroids.
Isaac would be a terrible, terrible fullback.

If accurate, I don't think that's a good sign. Yes, I remember the Roster Weight Rule.

he was never going to be an RB here.

For perspective, that's 10 lbs less than P Kenny Allen.

I don't think either him or Reuben Jones will see much playing time in the near future. Or, they move over to LB

Yes, and many of the freshmen have the same heights/weights as when they were introduced in February. I believe the roster usually gets updated closer to the season, and you'll probably see some new weights there. I just don't think they go through all ~100 players, weigh every single one, and get those all on the initial roster. Some slip through the cracks for some reason.
of a 'no man's land' for defensive players. Too light for DE. Even too light for an ideal LB. To big for safety (though neither could realistically play there anyways on speed/agility/no prior experience grounds).
[edit: was referring to Ruben Jones and Shelton Johnson, not Shallman. My mistake.]

Walk-on is all I was aware of. Among kids from foreign countries that don't play football, there are probably quite a few with college-level talent who just never had the chance to try football out. I say we recruit more rugby players.

as a 276 lbs TE will have to be deployed for total world domination.
Half serious question: As agile as he is, if he added 30 lbs would he possibly become a tremendous LT? Not saying that he should try to move to LT, but he is really agile for such a huge player.
August 7th, 2016 at 10:54 AM ^
If he's going 300+, I think I'd rather have him on the other side of the ball.
August 7th, 2016 at 10:58 AM ^
But he is so agile for his size it makes him very versatile. Could be a weapon at TE, DE (or with more weight possibly on the interior d-line), and maybe even as a LT that would be way too quick with his feet for any DE to ever get around.
August 7th, 2016 at 11:59 AM ^
You saying he's fruity? (THat's cool)

Agree 100% on this idea
August 7th, 2016 at 11:08 AM ^
A massive TE who looks like an LT and is a natural beast when blocking but can also extend the field while giving the QB another sure-handed option? I'll be sad to see Jake Butt go but I'm excited for the future at that position.

JH speaking into Drevno's ear, with his play sheet covering his mouth, at some point in the 3rd quarter of a tight game: "The moment has arrived. Deploy The Wheatley."

August 7th, 2016 at 11:38 AM ^
the possibilities that Wheatley opens up for the offense this year.
Is he an extra quasi-o-line player? D better bring down a safety to deal with the numbers mismatch on a run. Ooops! Chesson is behind the D on a play action pass.
Or is he going to be streaking down the middle of field past a LB? LB will have to pause for bit to find out before reacting on play action or Wheatley will already 5 yards behind the LB. Pause and the LB is too late to fill a hole on a run. Don't pause and Wheatley has a 25 yard gain.
Or is he a decoy drawing a LB away from the true receiver target on the play in the middle of the field?
Pick your poison defensive players.
