Suspended 5 games at start of upcoming season for failed drug test. Not sure what tested positive for.

A mod over at RealGM was at the Orlando summer league all week and apparently the staffs and players can be real chatty in such a setting.

He said that Mitch has quite the reputation for being a whiner, all with teammates and management and refs, and that his personality will probably keep him from ever getting the shot it takes to last in the league.

He seemed so easy going and happy go lucky to me, but I can see how that'd translate to having maturity or professionalism issues.

It's a shame.  His skillset is becoming increasingly valuable in the league.

(I know it's a double post, didn't see that there were two threads. This one seems more viable).

Why wouldn't he manage his intake so as to avoid getting nailed on the tests?

Does he want to be suspended, or does he want to play?

If Mitch was an alcoholic however he would get a paid vacation to an upscale spa/rehab resort with no suspension. Cannabis however he gets told to get out, and only come back when he's not a dirty pothead.

Why is your problem with the league?

It should be with the law.

If weed was legalized across the country, I have a hard time believing the NBA would suspend players for smoking it.

Your blame seems directed in the wrong direction. Rather than blame the NBA for his suspension, why not blame him for breaking a rule and blame the US Government for the rule being in place? The NBA really has nothing to do with it.

Adam Silver couldn't give a damn if his players smoked weed, but he does care if they break the law.

Get it legalized and I'm willing to bet everything I own the NBA treats weed no different than a cigarette (I know the differences, I'm saying, you won't be able to smoke indoors, you have to be 18, yada yada yada).

My problem is with the law. It's also with the league, and any other business that makes decisions on employment based on whether or not someone consumes cannabis during their personal time.

And even if miraculously cannabis was legalized federally in my lifetime prohibitionists would still fight it tooth and nail when it comes to employment.

It's really hard for me to get all self righteous and side with the league here. If it's just pot, keep on keeping on Mitch. There's nothing wrong with smoking pot unless your doing so causes you to hurt others in some way.

If you're talking about morality or general ethics, fine.

If you're asserting the standard pothead line that there are literally no negative physiological or psychological effects on athletes in the short and medium term, you're deluding yourself. That stance is just as stupid as saying there's no negative effects of booze.

And given that Harbaugh has already bounced one player for pot, he thinks you're wrong too.

I am seriously just sick of seeing these athletes, yaer after year, get suspended or kicked out of their program because of pot use.  The whole instututional outlook on it is stupid as fuck, and someone like michael phelps who was villianized for hitting a fucking bong.... the shitshow that came from people finding out was exponentially worse than hitting a bong ever could be.

At a school like michigan, where the fuckng hash bash is held every year since the beginning of time, I'm just tired of reading these headlines.  Athletes probably could use the theraputic benefits of cannabis more than just about anyone else. I'd rather have my kids coming in after a couple tokes the night before as long as it isn't getting in the way or their game rather than coming in half dehydrated with a hangover.

And yes, I do realize this didn't happen AT Michigan, but this story has been a headline seemingly more than once a year, lately.

Even the people in here acting like he committed some horrible act are just perpetuating the stupid bias.  Sports are hard on the body. Pot sure is in some quasi-legal status right now that makes no logical sense across various states -- but what else would you rather these guys use? injections? cortisone? opioids?

Stop acting like there is no medicinal benefit just because there is an obvious recreational benefit.  The two do not have to be mutually exclusive.

It's not that he smoked weed, it's that you would have figured he would have learned his lesson from his time at UM. And especially with OKC needing more players, you would have thought he wouldn't mess around at this juncture.
