Atlanta Satellite Camp Round Up

Submitted by Blueblood2991 on

I've been watching updates on twitter throughout the day. Any hint of football in June is awesome to me.

Some details so far:

-Kirby Smart showed up late. Harbaugh was 15 minutes early and took control from the beginning. Smart was reportedly on his phone the majority of the time, while Harbaugh coached. Smart left an hour before the camp ended to get to Athens for a Georgia camp. Pretty sure he was mostly there to observe. Left via helicopter. Can you imagine the outrage and FOIA requests if Harbaugh flew from Ann Arbor to Detroit by a private chopper?

-Harbaugh wore a Hank Aaron jersey. Could be a trend, considering he wore a Colts jersey yesterday. He met Aaron earlier in the day, and Hank showed up to the camp later and addressed the campers.  Short video embeded below. We have a new Michigan fan.

-Narduzzi was at the camp. He's either spying for D'Antoni or he's smart enough to learn from one of the greats.  Either way, the disrespect is strong.

-Came across a few short periscopes if anyone is interested to see a peak of what goes on during these camps. (Warning-vertical filming, try not to gouge your eyes out)

Anyone else have any info? I'm sure we will get more details as more articles get written.

TL;DR = Our coach is better than yours.

Thank you for sharing that. That was an excellent read. I am glad people are coming around to see who Harbaugh really is. I liked the point made by a commented that camps are looked different by different coaches and there is a possibility that they all perceive different based on what they want to do. Excellent thoughts. Respect for Harbaugh was quite evident. We are so lucky to have him as our coach.

Just curious, what are you able to learn when you go to one of these camps in general (not just a Harbaugh camp)?  There's not much time that you are there, and there are a lot of other kids there.  How much focus is there on technique and so on?

It feels like these guys can't help but to not hate him. It's awesome. Which, I guess if you're going to pick a new known agent or trusted ally, you may as well go with the guy who just accused your arch-rival of being a self-serving hypocrite...

Local Atlanta news coverage is all about Harbaugh. At best, Kirby Smart gets mentioned as the guy who flew in on a helicopter or attended along with Harbaugh, but the rest of the articles is all about Harbaugh's love for coaching these camps, recruiting Georgia, his responses to questions about Nick Saban ("hypocritical" came up), and chillin' with Hammerin' Hank.

"Talk about something you don’t see every day.

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh was wearing a Hank Aaron Atlanta Braves jersey. Aaron was wearing a Michigan hat. And Georgia coach Kirby Smart flew into Maynard H. Jackson High School in a helicopter.

http://www.11alive.com/sports/jim-harbaugh-impressed-by-talent-at-atlan…

After the camp, Harbaugh recalled his father, Jack Harbaugh who coached for 45 years, putting on and going to similar camps.

By the time little Harbaugh reached high school, he was out on the field trying to impress the various coaches.

"Every time you saw one of the logos on the shirt, the opportunity was that much closer to you," Harbaugh said. "It was real. It was tangible."

Harbaugh wants the camps he puts on to be just like that. He wants them to be a fun learning experience.

And how could it not with Harbaugh running things?

Kirby Smart made a big splash when he choppered onto the baseball field at Atlanta’s Maynard Jackson High School in his now-well-known yellow helicopter so he could attend the first satellite football camp in the history of the state of Georgia on Thursday. But make no mistake about it, it was Jim Harbaugh’s and Michigan’s show.

oday was an especially exciting day for athletes and sports fans attending the Next Level Elite Football camp at Maynard Jackson High School in Atlanta.

In addition to gaining valuable skills, campers were able to make the acquaintance of Jim Harbuagh, the head coach of Michigan's acclaimed football program.

This won't win any recruitments outright but these camps do an amazing job of getting Michigan's foot in the door for a lot of recruitments they might have been left out of before.  Tons of possitive press, Michigan constantly in the news cycle, and the other coaches who show up had better keep up or they look bad in comparison.

Awesome summaries, OA.  That was pure joy reading through them and seeing how much pub the South is giving Harbaugh.  And for those who say these camps won't have a direct impact on recruits, here's some delicious icing on your DawgNation schadenfreude cake...

Two of Smith’s Cedar Grove players are Georgia commitments and participating in the camp — offensive linemen Netori Johnson and Justin Shaffer. Pittman, who would be their position coach at UGA, was always close by if not coaching them directly. But the strong Michigan presence definitely had an effect on these prospects. “It was better than I thought it was going to be and there were a lot of people here,” said Johnson, a 6-4, 348-pound, 4-star tackle. “Michigan came down here and they swarmed everything. All you see is yellow and blue everywhere. Even though its the state of Georgia, we were engulfed.” Asked if it all had some level of influence on him, Johnson smiled and said, “I have a scholarship offer from the University of Michigan. It was great having them here, beautiful. Coach Pittman was coaching me up, too. But it did change my opinion of Michigan. I’m going to have to get up there and look around.”

Not mentioned in a lot of the stories, but one writeupbsaid former Atlanta mayor, civil rights leader and UN ambassador Andrew Young made an appearance and addressed the camp.

He looked pudgy and pathetic. He really did.

And his intro speech was just going through the motions, like he was just trying to get it over with. Not impressed.

He should have stayed home, or just sent an assistant.

Don't get on the field with Harbaugh unless you are ready to suit up and play.

Imagine going to a camp and being forced to listen to Hank Aaron. I see why Saban was up in arms. Oh, the humanity.

Amirite?

I can't imagine why he would show up at the camp just to demonstrate in front of a bunch of in-state recuits that he is less interested in coaching football than JH.

The Georgia fans are freaking out about the "Michigan-yellow" helicopter Smart flew in on, and how Michigan coaches took over the camp while the Georgia coaches basically just stood around and watched.

All they could do was fall back on their old lazy standby "It's winter 7 months a year up there" comments while Harbaugh ate their snow cones.

All in all, a piss-poor showing for Dawg Nation.

Narduzzi is scheduled to be one of the guest coaches at the Paramus camp as well. He may have wised up on satellite camps, but probably is just riding Harbaugh coattails.

If I were another coach, I'd try to learn from and collegially compete with JH at these camps. I know Narduzzi was at MSU, but I do think that stuff can all go out the door if you have mutual respect for coaching talent/work ethic. If Pat Fitzgerald was hired by OSU, I think Harbaugh would still respect him and have a collegial relationship with him.

He showed up, talked to his handful of guys he's recruiting, and then ditched the camp. Yeah, a lot of older Georgia kids are going to want to go there simply because it's in state and Michigan is considered a usurper, but consider the freshmen who attended the camp. They saw how awesome Harbaugh is and will be reminded of how much better Harbaugh is to be around than Kirby Smart every year there's a camp. We need these camps to continue so that they can pay dividends for us in the future.

Smart: “I wasn’t doing it for show or anything like that,” Smart told DawgNation. “I just needed (the helicopter) to get from one place to another. I wish I could have stayed longer because there are a lot of good prospects here. But I can’t be in two places at once.”

What a revealing, cynical comment that shows Smart's true character.

While Harbaugh is talking about the love of the game and self improvement to each and every kid that showed up, Smart is viewing the whole event as just a drive-by (fly-by) meat market.

I read that DawgNation story, it was fairly complementary of Michigan and Harbaugh.  But there are a couple of comments that I found truely amusing, and typical of SEC knotheads.  Have to admit, though, everyone was wondering why Smart's chopper was yellow, instead of black and red - and pissed that it's not UGA's colors!  LMAO!!

Odds are, none of the recruits at that camp end up with a scholarship to play football for Michigan. But I'll bet that camp made more than few fans of Michigan for years to come.

he'd be formidable on the retail end of things. This caught my eye in the 247 write-up:

"He let the media pretty much go and do whatever we wanted. Also smart."

Harbaugh knows that making enemies out of the media as a group is stupid, and he has an instinctive talent for marketing and PR, which is essentially what the sateliite camps are all about. Within the space of18 months he's completely rebuilt and renewed the Michigan brand to the point where everybody in the country is talking either about him or Michigan.

The money spent on the satellite camps is an investment in the Michigan brand, and it appears to be paying off handsomely so far.

This is dead on.  People forget that Franklin had been doing camps in the south for Penn State a year before Harbaugh did, and nobody even noticed.

The stature of Michigan in the south today, compared with just a year ago, is truly amazing.  A year ago we were another Penn State that nobody noticed, pecking around the south for leftovers.

Today we show up for a satellite camp a few miles from where they play the SEC championship game, and every TV station in town shows up to cover it.

There will be an army of local and national media at evey single camp that Harbaugh puts on this summer.

You can't buy that kind of impactful publicity.

I can't believe you guys are falling for this.  Everything he does is a ruse to travel around and meet as many baseball players as he can.  Seriously though, if he's ever in a bad mood just bring in a Hall of Famer.

All the SEC wants to talk about is recruiting.  And, while there may be some recruiting benefit to UM twith these camps, the thing I have taken from his videos this week is that he really just genuinely enjoys coaching just for the sake of coaching.  He wants these kids to improve and work on their craft and compete regardless of where they go to school.  And, he gives 100% all the time for loooong hours for kids that likely don't go to UM.  He out coaches all the other coaches.  I really believe him when he says his passion is just spreading his love for football.  Maybe recruiting is another benefit, but he really enjoys just coaching these guys.  It seems very authentic.

Agreed.  You just can't fake it for 40 camps over two months.  Watch the video above, Kirby Smart can barely fake it for a 30 second introduction speech.

You start every camp knowing that it is extremely unlikely to produce a viable recruit.  You need to want to be there for some other reason.

Re-building the UM image/brand/legacy such as to improve the attractiveness of UM to recruits is the #1 purpose of these camps. There is no doubt to me these camps are to help Michigan with recruiting, both directly (meeting recruits) and indirectly (media attention, building respect for UM, gaining fans in the South).

The reason it is working so well, though, is because Harbaugh does truly love football and is just as happy coaching a middle school kid as a D-1 prospect. His love for the sport and for development of youth is unparallelled.

I do think it is a bit naive for us to say "maybe this helps recruiting somewhat". Jim, as much as he loves football, wouldn't be doing these camps at the magnitude he is if it weren't improving UM and the UM football team first and foremost.

I'm just glad his football soul is happy.

The most pleasing thing of all is that if the SEC would have just kept their lazy whiney mouths shut, the publicity would have been only marginal.

They made these camps a national event, as much as Harbaugh has.  Every TV station in Atlanta would not have shown up to cover a camp that's no different than the dozens of camps that are held every year without the SEC-manufactured controversy.

Nobody would have cared, the same way they did not care when James Franklin had some Penn State camps in the south earlier.

But now, the genie is out of the bottle.  Every single Harbaugh camp will be mobbed by local and national media, creating a Woodstock buzz that just keeps feeding on itself.

So, um, thanks Nick!
