Hello: Phil Paea
HAIR [Isaiah Hole/247]
As first reported by Sam Webb and confirmed by Steve Wiltfong, Michigan has picked up a commitment from 2017 Berrien Springs (MI) three-star DT Phil Paea, who visited Ann Arbor this weekend for the Spring Game. While Paea is ranked as the #13 in-state prospect on the 247 Composite, his offer sheet suggests he'll move up that list considerably; Paea chose the Wolverines over the likes of Notre Dame, Oregon, and USC. The Irish posed a particularly serious threat as Berrien Springs is only a half-hour away from South Bend.
Paea's commitment is an early feather in the cap for new director of player personnel Tony Tuioti:
A major factor in Paea's commitment to Michigan was director of player personnel Tony Tuioti, a Hawaii native who hit it off with the prospect on his first visit to campus last month.
"Coach Tuioti was a big factor in why my visit went so well," he told Wolverine247 at the time. "He really made me feel at home and showed me why Michigan could be a great place for me."
Paea is Michigan's tenth commit in the 2017 class and the first on the defensive line. He's also a cousin of current DT Bryan Mone; in addition to genes, they share similarly impressive hairstyles.
This post, along with Leonard Taylor's, will be updated in full on Monday, when there should be a good deal more scouting info available on both players.
Of a huge guy for the D-line.
Wait until he puts on more muscle from training here.
It just keeps getting better and better.

Five fakes out of five.
I always wonder why MgoPoser have to pretend this much.
HUGE grab by Michigan! Under the radar three star prospect with tons of big time offers. His rankings will go up and he will also compliment Rashan because he can play multiple posistions.
It will be like, "Rashan, you're such a good friend and teammate. Plus, that color is very slimming on you."
another big body at DL is always nice. but this kid also has the versatility to potentially play OL and thats huge. similar to that dude named boss last cycle, just sign up big athletes and then sort out where they fit best as they develop. specialization is great but harbaugh also likes his versatile athletes
From that pic, dude looks like he's 30.
I will try to learn how to pronounce his last name, but I suspect I'll call him Phil Paella for the next four years.
Very good point, Hoke had a knack for identifying DL talent.
their rankings/stars and their offer sheets is mind-boggling sometimes. That is the offer sheet you'd expect with a consensus 4-star. I mean, damn, we beat out some blue-bloods for this one. Yay, more large persons on the DL! Keep 'em coming!
He did just appear on recruiting radar very recently so I'd guess he will move up if he does camps this summer or after senior tape. If you look at his timeline on 247 the first item is less than 2 months ago, so he will likely end up on all the sites top xxx lists by the end of the cycle.
the guys that Harbaugh offers are going to improve a ton before signing day, but none of the higher rated guys that other top programs offer are going to improve as much or more?
There are lots of offers out there, and lots of kids with lots of offers. Not every kid with a pretty good offer sheet can be a 4-star unless you have 500 four-star prospects.
Big pick up at a position of need for Michigan. Welcome aboard Mr. Paea and Go Blue !!
The young man plays the game of football with a great deal of violence. But does he run with the bison?
Pacific Islander bison are the most violent kind. The first migration, they ran all the way from Easter Island and arrived with twenty sharks impaled per horn.
in Fiji, Guam, Tonga, Am. Samoa, any other Pacific island nations we can next year. j/k
But not really j/k. Seriously. Don't wait for families to migrate to Berrien Springs, go plant some recruiting seeds in the mother countries.

Can we just send WD with the shit too?
Actually nvm, that might turn them into Buckeye fans. WD can stay.
Do we know what side of the ball the staff likes him best? I know we have a bigger need at DT than at OG, but watching his film he looks more impressive at guard than at DT to me.
He talked about how he can't wait to play for Greg Mattison, so they want him at defensive line (probably tackle), probably. I like him better at OG, too.
Ok, we're rounding in on halfway full on this class. When is the "2017 Recruiting Overview" board going to get filled out ? I found that to be a massive information deal.
I don't know jack about recruiting but I'll do it anyway.
is 5-Star.
edit: Just from looking at his hair I can tell he is a 5-Star athlete.

So what? He's low rated. Saying he's "going to be a beast" is meaningless if there are hundreds of guys ahead of him who are going to be bigger beasts and end up somewhere else.

All I was saying was that I liked his hair...!
how can you tell he'll be a "beast" when he gets to college and has to compete against far tougher opposition? Everyone looks tough when they're clubbing baby seals.
rated higher than him play in person, your statement is meaningless. Not everyone who looks really good in high school ends up being a "beast" in major college football. In fact, most don't.
